Yoshi is a startable playable character for Ultra Smash Bros. IV and the protagonist of his own titular series Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story, also appearing in the Super Mario series as a Mario's ally and sometimes, hero. Yoshi was confirmed at the E3 demo and trailer together as a old member of the Original 8, including Luigi, Captain Falcon, Ness and Jigglypuff. As a protagonist in the Yoshi's Island series, Yoshi is the hero who helps Baby Mario to rescue his brother Baby Luigi, who was kindnaped by Baby Bowser, to the rest of their adventure with help of other Yoshis. In Yoshi's Story, Yoshi, alongside with others of his own race, after their birth, they decided to go on adventure eating fruits, specially melons, while Baby Bowser interrupts them during the adventure. Yoshi mantains his fresh appearence as in SSB4.

Yoshi's voiceclips were changed to a mix-up of his previous Mario games. Some of his voiceclips were recycled of his own games and some of Mario games such as Mario Kart Wii and Mario Party 9. All of these voiceclips are recorded by Kazumi Totaka, who also used his voiceclips since Smash 64 up to now.

With a great improvement, Yoshi ranked the 7th place of 103th (S) in the tier list, placing him at the bottom of the highest top tier placement before Cloud and after Ness, thanks for his little buffs in his framedata comparing to Smash 4. This is a notable rise for Yoshi being a mid-tier in Smash 4. Yoshi's total moveset, including his framedata, hasn't much changed since Smash 4.

Yoshi's matchups overall are pretty neat against characters above him in the list. His downpoint is his flutter jump, that goes higher and faster than the entire cast, it could be footstooled and his recovery cannot help him anymore. Using Egg Throws cannot recover higher than expected but gives Yoshi multiple midair jumps for an horizontal recovery. His worst matchup stays against Mario, and suprisingly against Pikachu.
