We all know, Mario is the best. Luigi is quite great too. But they would have never had any kind of adventure, if Yoshi didn't help them! This cute, hungry dinosaur marks his debut in Super Smash Bros. as the ninth character revealed, as well as the fourth of the second wave. Yoshi has helped Mario since he was born: in fact, Mario's very first adventure stars not himself, but rather Yoshi who, with his flutter jump and egg-laying ability, has way more abilities than a simple plumber. In Smash, Yoshi appears as a balanced character, with a tendency to be agile a slightly faster than usual.

Attributes[]

As stated before, Yoshi is a quite balanced character, being however slightly weaker than normal, owning in return the fifth fastest dashing speed, the second fastest walking speed, the highest air speed and average falling speed. Yoshi's moves tend to have little reach and inflict little damage, but due to his speed, Yoshi can easily perform a "hit-and-run" strategy. Yoshi's special attacks have little uses, except for Egg Throw, which is considered to be among the best snipes due to its very high knockback scaling, speed and possibility to be angled. All in all, Yoshi is a defensive character, who relies on small hits here and there that allow him to slowly raise his opponents' damage. Due to these disadvantages, Yoshi is ranked 20th out of 30 in the tier list: some players in fact consider Yoshi's agility and speed to be too important to be passed over.

Standard attacks[]

Ground attacks[]

  • Jab combo - two quick kicks. Has little reach, but also come out at frame 2.
  • Forward tilt - a small hit with his short tail. Due to the tail's length, it has very short reach, but, at high percentages, can launch opponents upwards, leading into kill confirms.
  • Up tilt - a head butt. Has a big hitbox, is fast and packs quite a punch, making it probably Yoshi's best tool to deal with grounded opponents.
  • Down tilt - swipes his tail. Like each tail-move, has ridiculously low reach.
  • Dash attack - kick forward, while slipping on the ground. Has high ending lag, even for a dash attack.
  • Forward Smash - a double head butt. The first, weak hit is fast and naturally combos into the second, stronger hit. Based on the head butt Yoshi performs in Super Mario Galaxy 2.
  • Up Smash - a leaping kick. Quite fast and has big hitboxes, but deals low damage and is considered to be among the weakest up Smashes.
  • Down Smash - sweeps his tail first in front of, then behind him. Strong, but with low reach.

Aerial attacks[]

  • Neutral aerial - spins around, hitting with his whole body. The hitbox, while small, covers his entire body.
  • Forward aerial - hits hard with his head. Has meteor smash effects.
  • Back aerial - hits with both feet behind him. Has quite high power and, along with his up aerial, is Yoshi's best aerial KO tool.
  • Up aerial - a foot frontflip, similar to the up smash. Very, very high knockback scaling, can KO quite early and is rather fast.
  • Down aerial - hits many times with his feet. Very particular, in the way that deals the single highest damage if all hits connect (exceeding over 50%). Based on the Flutter Jump animation seen in newer games.

Grab and throws[]

  • Grab - grabs his opponents with his tongue and puts them in his mouth. Similar to side special. Shortest tether in the game.
  • Pummel - bites them.
  • Directional throws - spits opponents in the direction inputted. They all have little usage, except for forward throw at high percentages, leading into some edge-guards.

Special Moves[]

Move Name Damage Description
Neutral Special Egg Throw 6% By holding down the button, Yoshi grabs an egg. In front of him will appear a viewfinder-line that moves up and down rather quickly. Yoshi can move around freely. By releasing the button, Yoshi launches the egg. It flies around and bounces if hits an angles surface.
Side Special Egg Lay 4% Yoshi swallows his opponents with his tongue and transforms them into an egg. It is impossible to affect in any way the length of the transformation, it increases with the damage as well, but it’s possible to slightly control where the egg will fall.
Up Special Blimp Fruit // Yoshi becomes a balloon and flies upward for a short period of time. A very predictable recovery move, but gives good height.
Down Special Yoshi Bomb 4% (hop), 12% (fall), 4% (stars) Yoshi hops in the air only to heavily fall on the ground, bottom first. Some stars will appear upon the landing. Deals infamously high shield damage, along with down air.
Final Smash Metallic Eggdozzer 84% Yoshi takes a deep breath, creates a giant, metallic egg and then throws it in front of him. The egg will bounce, not unlike the small eggs, but also deals immense damage. The move is meant to hit only once, but it’s possible to be hit multiple times, if the egg bounces.
