|First Game||Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3 (1994)|
The character of Wario has been the star of his own series of video games. The two major series featuring Wario, the WarioWare and Wario Land series, are collectively known as the Wario series.
The Wario Land series, which first started in 1994 with Wario Land: Super Mario Land 3, is a platforming series. With the exception of Wario World, all games are two-dimensional platformers that focus on Wario collecting treasures. These games have a deranged sense of humour, and seem to be parodies of the Super Mario Bros. series of games. Most titles feature the pirate Captain Syrup as the major antagonist, whom rivals Wario in his search for riches.
2003 saw the introduction of a second series starring Wario, the WarioWare series. Debuting with WarioWare, Inc.: Mega Microgame$!, the WarioWare titles are collections of short "microgames" starring Wario and his friends in the new setting of Diamond City. These "microgames" are minigames that last only a handful of seconds, and can be completed with various simple tasks.
