Virtual amiibo refers to an emulation service and line of amiibo figures that serve as an alternative to purchasing Virtual Console games. It is based on the Nintendo Entertainment System series of e-Reader cards.
The player must tap a Virtual amiibo figure to unlock its associated game. To encourage trading, the figure is no longer needed afterwards since game data is saved to the console, though players have the option to save or load an extra restore point to their figure by tapping it again. This can be used to store or exchange save data.
Some preexisting amiibo are compatible with the Virtual amiibo service, but most are new and have detailed designs based on the boxarts of the games they unlock.
