The following is a featurette explaining the making of Mario Kart: Hot Pursuit 2 and the creation of the Hot Pursuit franchise.

Clover: The idea for Mario Kart: Hot Pursuit came about with my love for the Need for Speed franchise as well as my love for the Mario series and Mario Kart. So, I decided, how cool would it be if I combined the 2 together. I wanted to make a Mario Kart game that was unique. Something that was never done before in the world of Mario Kart. You got real world cars, driving around racing in the streets, evading cops.

Mario Kart Hot Pursuit Gameplay

A race between Bowser (in a 2010 Dodge Grand Caravan) and Mario (in a 2012 Ford Mustang Convertible)

Clover: We didn't want to be like those other racing games that focus on realistic car effects, like totalling your car if you crash into another. Instead, our focus was on making the game fun. Plowing through traffic at 80 miles an hour and smashing your opponents into the walls of buildings to damage them, it's just fun. So, for Mario Kart: Hot Pursuit 2, our main focus was "more". We added more cars, more characters, more levels and environments, and more missions and things like that. We also wanted to add better graphics and more destructible traffic and sidewalk objects. Also, we added classic weapons from the Mario Kart franchise, like Bullet Bills and Koopa Shells, as well as new weapons like EMPS and Spike Strips. I guarantee you'll have fun playing this when it comes out on October 20th, 2012.
