The game's official Japan and North American releases both took place in September, while Europe and Australia are still awaiting October releases.
A basic Multiplayer gameplay mode is Multplayer Battle, which pits 2-4 opponents against each other. In this mode, players can battle on a time limit, using stocks, in teams, or a mix of the three. Items can be turned on or off, as well as stage hazards.
Parties with more than four players can head to the Tournament selection, where 4-24 players can play through a tournament, with one player being eliminated each round until a winner is crowned. In this mode, items can be turned on or off, as well as stage hazards.
Coliseum Mode sees 1-4 players competing in a variety of "minigames." The minigames are chosen at random, but specific ones can be turned off, and include Target Test, Race to the Finish, Home-Run Contest, Trivia, and more. After 10 rounds, the player with the most points wins the game.
The game features Online Mode, where 1-2 players can connect to other players around the world and battle. Tournament and Coliseum Mode are not able to be played in Online.
Event Matches is a mode that can only be played by one player. The player will journey through multiple "event" battles, which feature special gameplay elements. Event Matches can unlock trophies, stages, and more.
In All-Star, the player is given 1-5 stocks, and must defeat every unlocked fighter in their respective stage. Completing this mode gives the player a special trophy, depening on the character he or she used to complete it. The order that the characters are fought in is historically oldest to youngest.
