The Toon Zelda series is a sub-series of The Legend of Zelda that takes place in the Adult timeline of the series (although newer games may be released which take place in the other timeline). Zelda games are placed in this series when they have a cel-shaded graphics style, and they are generally cheerier than the other Zelda games.

History[]

The series started off with the release of The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker in 2002 and was later given a second game in the form of Phantom Hourglass in 2007 on Nintendo DS. The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks was released in 2009 recently; the game takes place many years after Phantom Hourglass, and uses a different Link to the first two games. On March 16, 2013, it was announced that Universal Studios-owned studio Illumination Entertainment (creators of Despicable Me), will produce an CGI-animated film adaptation of The Wind Waker movie on the big screen on April 15, 2016. A sequel is also in development for 2018.
