Tomodachi World Tour, known in Japan as Tomodachi World (Japanese: ともだちの世界; Hepburn: Tomodachi no Sekai), is a life simulation-dating simulator handheld video game being developed by Nintendo SPD [Software Planning & Development] and published by Nintendo for the Nintendo Switch. World Tour is a direct sequel to 2013's Tomodachi Life as well as its predecessor, the Japan-exclusive Tomodachi Collection, and will release on an unknown date in 2018. Fan-requested features such as same-sex marriage and more customization options have been added along with improvements to features from the previous games.

Development[]

As Tomodachi Life 2[]

Development on the game began in 2015 with the three directors from Life heading the project, referred to internally as "Tomodachi Life 2" or "Project Globe", and was to be released for the Nintendo 3DS in Q2 2016. In an interview with IGN on the progress of the game, Sato commented the main goal was to make "[Tomodachi Life 2] an epitome of decades of dating simulator developments and hopefully inspire people to express their true feelings towards others regardless of gender or race." Sato's replies were met with controversy from the anti-LGBTQ community with former fans flocking to the social networking site Tumblr to express their complaints.

New Features[]

Customization[]

  • The voice synthesizer has been updated, allowing players to record their voices as "samples" which are modified as the game needs them.
  • Over 125 new hairstyles, skin tones, and other customization options have been added to the pre-existing library.
  • Miis can now be transgender.
  • Relationships have been expanded so Miis do not have to be related directly to the player's doppelganger.
  • Two new personality groups have been added, meaning there are now 24 possible personalities.
  • Phrases can be assigned to Miis from the character creation screen.
  • A new feature is the ability to make Miis multi-lingual by teaching them or assigning them the languages from the beginning.
    • Miis can also have a foreign language as their first language.

Gameplay[]

  • The graphics have significantly improved since Life, especially considering the series's jump to better hardware, and thusly more characters can be on screen simultaneously.
  • Some of the dream minigames have been removed or changed while four have been added.

Locations[]

  • Miis can now travel to real-world places and learn languages by either reading a translation guide, learning from a teacher, or interacting with citizens of the various countries they can visit.
  • The main island has been significantly expanded to add several new buildings;
    • Academy - All Miis can be educated in a subject here which may help them during a future event. For child and teen Miis, attendance is mandatory for seven hours on weekdays. Subjects available include Social Studies, Dating, Foreign Language, Mathematics, Science, English (US)/Japanese (Japan), and Clubs.
    • Country Club - Miis can participate in sports such as swimming and archery in order to either impress their lover or just for recreation. This is an expansion of the sports seen during cutscenes in Life.
    • Department Store - A replacement for the shops of the past several games which features a grocery, clothing shop, pawn shop, and an import shop. The Import Shop, however, has been changed as items are now received over the internet or through codes due to the Switch's lack of StreetPass and SpotPass.
      • New shops include a game shop [dubbed "Rednblack Games" as a reference to the Virtual Boy], a garage, and a convenience store.
    • Hotel - Miis who visit from other countries will stay here and may remain on the island as teachers or as just residents.
  • The entire island is decorated for several holidays during both day and night as opposed to primarily being decorated in day time.
  • Conversations between multiple islanders can be heard when they are in a certain location.
  • Most of the areas present in previous games are open from the beginning and will expand depending on how many residents you have.
  • Apartments are now divided among three buildings, meaning up to 300 Miis can live on the island.
