The Legend of Zelda is a 2017 fantasy film based on The Legend of Zelda (series). The film is produced by Nintendo Studios, Original Film and distributed by Universal Studios. The film is live-action, starring Josh Hutcherson, Elle Fanning, Gary Oldman and Ewan McGregor.

The film will be released on June 21, 2017, the film will be directed by Francis Lawrence, the film received mixed reviews for critics praising performances by Hutcherson ,Fanning and cast, visual effects, action sequences and soundtrack, however receive criticism for Ganondorf's costume design and rushed storyline, despite the mixed reviews the film was a box office sucess and becoming one of Nintendo's highest grossing films

Plot[]

Premise[]

Based on the popular Nintendo video games series, Link was an ordinary orphan farm boy living in the region within Hyrule, until he met Princess Zelda who had chosen him to wield the legendary Master Sword, as she had been searching for someone worthy to wield of the sword and fulfill the prophecy to defeat the evil Ganondorf, will he be able to?

Film[]

The film starts off Princess Zelda riding her horse back to Hyrule Castle, informed her father King Willham that she still has not found anyone to wield the Master Sword, King Willham is worry that if someone is found to wield sword soon Ganondorf will take the whole kingdom

The next morning, a boy named Link who is a farm boy, he is feeling depressed as today is the anniversary of his died, he is upset because they died when he was a baby and he never got to know to they were, at a milk bar a girl named Illda a girl who is Link's love interest does everything so can to cheer him, Link does not understand what the mark on his hand mean, Illda tells that she thinks it means his parents love him even when they are not with him, while Link spends his time not farming, he rides his horse Epona while practicing archery

The next day Zelda goes out in disguise to search for someone to wield the Master Sword, later that night Link tells Illda that he is grateful to have a friend like her and she feels the same way about him, suddenly the village is attacked by Bubble creatures, Link as acts get his bow and arrow and is easily able to defeat them, the villagers thank Link for save them, Link is unaware that Princess Zelda who is in disguise saw everything and has secretly chosen him.

Zelda returns to the castle to inform her father that she thinks she has found someone to wield the Master Sword, meanwhile in a isolated mountain in the woods, Ganondorf is furious to find out that the Bubble Creatures had been defeated is plotting to kidnap Princess Zelda and kill Link.

The next day while riding his horse in the woods, Link is suddenly ambushed by a Dogongo, Link uses his bow & arrow but does not shown to be humanted by it after a long battle he defeats, then is approached by Princess Zelda, she inform him that she had saw him defeat the Bubble creatures and she has chosen to wield the sword, she takes him to the castle and introduces him to her father King Willham, he is told that he is chosen to fulfil the prophecy to became a hero and defeat Ganondorf, Link does not think he can do it and that he is not who they think he is, Link was about to leave when King Willham inform that he knows how his parents, Link then stays and wants to know how but the King does not tell and he learn why he was chosen, but informs that the mark on his hand is the Triforce and he is connected to it.

Meanwhile Ganondorf finds that Dogongo was defeated, Ganondorf realizes that Link was chosen to wield the Master Sword and is filled with ranged, Willham and Zelda train Link, after the training they take him to the Master Sword, he tries to lift it but is not able, because Link does not believe he is a hero yet, the next days they train him and try to lift the Master Sword but still is not able.

After many attempts they give up on him because Link does not believe he can be a hero, Zelda returns Link to his village and apologizes to him, Ganondorf ambushes them and kidnaps Zelda and taunts him and Zelda and runs off with her, Link returns the castle and informs Willham that Zelda has been kidnapped, Link then has a vision of how his parents died and it was revealed that they were killed by Ganondorf and was about to kill him but was saved by King Willham, finally understanding why he was chosen, Link is finally able to lift the Master Sword.

Ganondorf taunts Zelda, who refuses to bow to him, Link arrived with his sword and shield, he confronts Ganondorf if he killed his parents and Ganondorf confirms that he did and plans to kill him too, the battle then takes places and was briefly hauled when Ganondorf wounds Link, after the battle Link defeats Ganondorf and was send to imprisonment

Link returns to the village as hero

Development[]

On June 6, 2012, Universal Studios, along with Nintendo Studios announced a live action film titled The Legend of Zelda with a 2017 release date, Hunger Games alumi director Francis Lawrence announce as director.

In November 2012, Lawrence announced that he planned the film to be a PG-13 film but nothing related to The Hunger Games films or anything to violence, the violence will be mild to moderate, he try to make the film as accurate to video games as possible

In 2013, Universal announced that the film will be co-produced with Original Films.

In 2014, Universal announced that the film will be release on June 21, 2017

Casting[]

In 2014 casting began. In January 2015, Universal announced that Elle Fanning was given the role of Princess Zelda, in March 2015, Josh Hutcherson was announced the main role of Link, in April, Gary Oldman announced he was playing Ganondorf, that same month Ewan McGregor was given the role of King Willham, the King of Hyrule and the father of Princess Zelda

Filming[]

Filming began in March 2016 in the United Kingdom, the location for filming was used for the same where Maleficent was filmed, filming lasted over 10 weeks and was completed on August 25, 2016

Music[]

On April 16, 2016, Alexandre Desplat announced that he compose the music for the film, a pop song title "Triforce Heroes" will be played during the credits performed by Lorde, as during the credits the video games main theme will be played as well


Release[]

The film was released on June 21, 2017. This is the first Nintendo film to receive a PG-13 rating. It is Rated PG-13 for "fantasy action violence", the premiere was held on June 19, 2017

A teaser photo for Josh Hutcherson as Link was released online on August 3, 2016, In November 2016 a teaser trailer for The Legend of Zelda was released in front Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a week later a teaser poster was release featuring the Triforce and the Master Sword, in January 2017 official still photo from the film were released, in March 2017 an official trailer was released played in front of Kong: Skull Island, a day later an official poster was released, as character posters from the film, in April 2017, 3 TV Spots were released, merchandise for the film were also release including novels, toys and app games "Link's Target Practice" a target archery shooting game on iPhone, iPod touch silimiar to Link's Crossbow Training, "Link vs. Ganondorf" a fighting app game that place in the final fight of the film, close-up character posters were also released, on April 16, 2017 a featurette of the characters were release with actors discussing portpoyaling their characters, on April 20, 2017 3 official clips from the film were released, a day later 5 new TV Spots were released, on April 28 a final trailer was released, on May 1, 2017 2 new TV Spots were released, on May 3, 2017 a Theatrical poster was released, on May 10, 2017 4 new TV Spots were released, on May 14, 2017 a special titled "The Evolution of Zelda" aired which token at look the first game right up to Breathe of Wild with scenes of film exclusive at the conclusion, on May 15, 2017 2 new TV Spots were released, on May 22 4 new TV Spots were released and on May 28, 2017 a first look at the first 5 mintues of the film will be released online, On June 1, 3 new clips were released, On June 3 2 New TV Spots were released, On June 17 3 New TV Spots were released.

The film opened with $93,475,161 weekend gross, becoming the highest opening weekend gross for a Nintendo, this film in additional has become Nintendo Studios' highest grossing film

Critical respond[]

The film received mixed reviews with critics prising the film on performances on the cast particularly by Hutcherson and Fanning, visual effects, action sequences, soundtrack and faithfulness to the video game series, but received criticism for Ganondorf's costume design and rushed storyline.

Sequels[]

On May 3, 2016, Universal and Nintendo announced that if the film was a success, they will consider making a possible trilogy with the second film being subtitle The Wrath of Ganondorf with a possible release date in 2019 and the third film being title Twilight Princess being released in 2021, after the success of the film, Universal and Nintendo confirmed sequels
