The Binding of Isaac: Fallen is an upcoming sequel to the original Binding of Isaac & its expansion, The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth. The game focuses once again around Isaac however after evading his mother finds himself traversing mysterious lands in which vicious new foes are encountered and he must come to accept his fate and destiny.

Backstory

In accordance with the events of Ending 15 from the Binding of Isaac: Rebirth, Isaac had supposedly been missing. It is shown in the introd cutscene that Isaac, who is ocassionally flashing in between his regular self and his demon self are searching for his father whom he has an image of that he is carrying, he appears to be walking in an alleyway and soon comes upon a set of stairs, he hears moaning coming from within, however he suddenly hears someone whisper his name, and he turns around to see a shadowy figure, push him down.

Gameplay

Much like its predecessor, Isaac moves around in a dungeon crawler style game. The game retains many features from the first including, Bombs, Keys and Coins which can be used at certain times to find and unlock secrets and items as well as (in the case of Coins) buy items. The game introduces the fifth type of hearts, Golden Hearts. These hearts are powerful hearts that reduce the damage taken by half, however only apply for while they are still there. If emptied they can be refilled but only refill as a red heart. The items, Golden Blood (converts all Red Hearts into Golden Hearts), Shining Ink (converts all Black Hearts to Golden Hearts) & Bright Aura (converts all Soul Hearts into Golden Hearts) are also able to make Golden Hearts.

There are thirteen playable characters, and like last time all playable character except for Isaac must be unlocked, however as a bonus, if the player had fully unlocked every playable character from the first game, they would be able to immediately play as Ares, Veryl, Scar and Caprius.

The player's main goal is to find their father who is supposedly at the end of the long chained dungeons that Isaac progresses through. Isaac will have to face the senses as well as several powerful demons, including Lucifer (optional) and later confront the truth about his father.

Playable Characters

There are 13 Playable characters in The Binding of Isaac: Fallen. Only Isaac returns from the previous installments while the other twelve are representations of the 12 Zodiac starting with Ares through to Pisces. Each character has a different variety of stats, attack methods and special abilities and may or may not start out with a pickup.

Locations

In the Binding of Isaac: Fallen, there are ten areas in every run with each being comprised of three dungeons. Dungeons vary in size from Very Small (10 Rooms), Small (18 Rooms), Medium (30 Rooms), Large (48 Rooms), Very Large (52 Rooms), Colossal (60 Rooms) & Marathon (The Void and Cathedral only, 100 Rooms). Initially when starting out, only the first version of the alternating areas (2, 4 & 8) are available, however after defeating every boss and mini-boss of those areas, the alternate version may occur for various dungeons, including it alternating between the two.

Depending on the player's difficulty setting, the rooms can be limited in size with Easy only going up to 30 Rooms Max, Medium going up to 52 Rooms Max and Hard going up to 100 Rooms Max, for each dungeon.

The Pits

The first location in the game, it draws parallels to The Basement, the previous game's starting area. Its theme is Obliviousness and this is shown by enemies taking longer to notice Isaac and the abundance of rocks and walls.

  • Area Theme: Obliviousness
  • Area Boss: Visus
  • Mini-Bosses: Blinker, Winker, Charmer, Spotlight, Horde, Doppelganger

Jungle

Jungle, along with Bunker are alternate versions of the second area. The Jungle follows the theme of Sloth and has slightly slower enemies as well as many delayed traps.

  • Area Theme: Sloth
  • Area Boss: Abaddon
  • Mini-Bosses: Sloth, Smog, Wrapper, Procastinator, Kraken, Blindness

Bunker

Bunker, along with Jungle are alternate versions of the second area. The Bunker follows the theme of Wrath and as such, enemies will deal double damage and there will be significantly more traps than usual.

  • Area Theme: Wrath
  • Area Boss: Sathanus
  • Mini-Bosses: Wrath, War Hero, Sniper, Igniter, Cerberus, Blindness

The Sewer

The Sewer is the third area in the game and draws parallels to The Depths from the first game. Its theme is Summoning and as such has many drawings on the walls and floors of which several enemies can appear from.

  • Area Theme: Summoning
  • Area Boss: Gustate
  • Mini-Bosses: Reflex, Symbiosis, Charmer, Flavour, Decay, Jaw Breaker, Brain Freeze

Mines

Mines, along with Cold Storage are alternate versions of the fourth area. Mines follow the theme of Greed and as such, enemies can steal money from Isaac and will always drop money. There are also three shops on every floor in Mines.

  • Area Theme: Greed
  • Area Boss: Mammon
  • Mini-Bosses: Greed, Igneous, Sediment, Lattice, Gemstone, Golem, Sand Leviathan

Cold Storage

Cold Storage, along with Mines are alternate versions of the fourth area. Cold Storage follows the theme of Gluttony and as such as enemies with double health that drop hearts significantly more often. Every room also has destructable objects that mirror the six parts of the Food Pyramid.

  • Area Theme: Gluttony
  • Area Boss: Belphegor
  • Mini-Bosses: Gluttony, Beefer, Lamb, SM, Visible Unicorn, Orc, Ice Leviathan

The Catacombs

The Catacombs are the fifth area in the Game, not to be confused with the Catacombs from the first game as this version features a much more classic appearance, with skull walls and graves. The theme of this area is Realization and as such, enemies will notice Isaac a lot quicker and attack more quickly.

  • Area Theme: Realization
  • Area Boss: Odor
  • Mini-Bosses: Poppy, Blob, Charmer, Catcher, Influenza, Minotaur, Fracture, Cyclone

Power Plant

Power Plant is the sixth area in the Game and the only Deadly Sin to not have an alternative. Its theme of Envy is shown by the abundance of Isaac sized enemies and the sole appearance of an enemy called, the Image which copies Isaacs exact movement (including which weapons he has).

  • Area Theme: Envy
  • Area Boss: Belzebub
  • Mini-Bosses: Envy, Hypercharge, Volt, Overheat, Deep Freeze, Abyss, Gabriel, Venom

The Mansion

The Mansion is the seventh area in the game, it doesn't appear to look similar to any area from the previous game and looks like a building more than anything else. Its theme of Corruption is shown by the many alternate version enemies in the game and the special effect enemies and bosses that are encountered more often.

  • Area Theme: Corruption
  • Area Boss: Audite
  • Mini-Bosses: Sound Boom, Quaker, Cochlea, Beat, Rhythm, Apparatus

Graveyard

Graveyard, along with Hell are alternate versions of the eigth area in the game. Graveyard follows the theme of love, which is shown by enemies always appearing in pairs, the abundance of Double Trouble Rooms and the symmetry in the dungeons themselves.

  • Area Theme: Lust
  • Area Boss: Asmodeus
  • Mini-Bosses: Lust, Flirt, Aroma, Masculine-Feminine, Siren, Screech

Hell

Hell, along with Graveyard are alternate versions of the eigth area in the game. Hell follows the theme of pride as enemies will be extremely aggressive, often in stronger variations of themselves and the dungeon is usually gigantic in comparison to its alternate version with some dungeons having up to 60 rooms.

  • Area Theme: Pride
  • Area Boss: Lucifer
  • Mini-Bosses: Pride, War, Famine, Pestilence, Death, Unborn, Undead, Compassion, Equality, Healthiness, Soul

The Void

The Void is the ninth area in the game, it appears to be a bunch of islands floating above a super massive black hole. The islands themselves have visual connections to the Pits, Sewer, Catacombs & Mansion in their design. The theme of this area is death which is seen by the abundance of skeletal enemies and also by several enemies appearing by pulling themselves out of the ground.

  • Area Theme: Death
  • Area Boss: Palpate
  • Mini-Bosses: Vision, Appetite, Scent, Auditory, Grasp, Newborn, Oldborn, Never, Never Ever

Cathedral

Cathedral is the tenth and final area in The Binding of Isaac: Fallen, it is similar in design to Cathedral from the first game although is noticeably more colourful with the main colour being white with secondary in the rest of the rainbow. The theme is Heaven which is represented by the appearance of many Angelic Enemies as well as the music being peaceful and primarily Harp comprised and also several stained glass images depict events from Isaac's past.

  • Area Theme: Heaven
  • Area Boss: Father
  • Mini-Bosses: Lamb, Unborn, Gabriel, Reaper, Conquest, Judgement, Mother, B Spirit, D Spirit, O Spirit, T Spirit, U Spirit, Holy Spirit, Isaac Fallen, Isaac Faithful, Isaac's Soul

Trivia

  • Several Bosses were renamed, reworked or removed during production including fusing five bosses named after the five flavours simply into Flavour
  • The Letter Spirits (B, D, O, T & U) when fully named refer to afflictions that can disable one of the main five senses; Blinded, Deafened, Odourless, Tasteless & Untouchable.
  • Unlike in the previous games where some bosses recieved new forms like Mega Satan, Monstro II & The Husk, no boss in this game currently features alternate forms although it has been suspected that an update to the game will reveal possible alternate bosses.
