Tempo's Funky Pack is a shoot-and-run platforming-adventure video game developed by Gear Games and published by SEGA that is released the May 14th 2019 on the Nintendo Switch. It is a reboot of the Tempo franchise, and the game takes place after the events of the SEGA Saturn game Super Tempo, and is revealed that Tempo's Funky Pack is a combined continuity of the latter, Tempo (SEGA 32X) and Tempo Jr.
Gameplay[]
The gameplay is a combination of Tempo and Super Tempo; the characters can kick, use projectiles, get the highest score possible and exploring the levels. There are multiple new elements in this game added to keep the franchise fresh, such as expending upon the Dancing mechanic found in Tempo to give it more function, the ability to play as any playable character at any time, and temporary add an extra ability with the candies called the Changers.
The main objective is to collect all of the Melody Notes that will restore the humor, happiness and harmony of Rythmia, as well as restoring defective sounds. Most Melody Notes are guarded by a boss, which the players must defeat. Up to four players can play offline and online.
Although getting as many points as possible is the secondary objective, exploration had become more encouraged does to the Performances (the name of the levels) being much larger and more varied, and most of them requires various skills of each character in order to progress. There are also 20 Treasures to collect, which while optional, are collectibles similar to the Super Mario franchise's Power Stars and Power Moons, and each of them gives the player 50,000 points, and collecting all of a World's Treasures will makes 500,000 points.
Although the life system is lifted and thus the player can only lose a hundred points and simply return into the last Checkpoint Door, it is still possible to get a Game Over by losing in very unusual circumstances, as seen in Unusual Losses.
Another addition is the Parkour Skill. This allows the players to collect more Doremis and getting a higher score by performing an attack or a movement in a rhythm. A blue flash will indicate the perfect timing, although if it is not pressed yet, the blue flash will gradually goes into green (great), yellow (good) and red (OK), with less and less Doremis and score being rewarded. The players can chain up a Combo by doing five or more Parkour Skills in Perfect, Great or Good timing.

There is still hope in the form of the Gigantizer Changer! The player one take on Werekaiju Damsel, while the other players uses their projectile to cancel her smaller projectiles and to distract her by shooting on her head. Play a death metal music. Causes Tempo and his friends to only have one HP. This means that if they get hit by anything, anything, its game over, man! Stay sharp and make sure to not get hit. On the bright side, you will get twice as Points and Doremis when taking on any levels in One-Hit Mode. |
M6 Jazz Play Found after completing Fossil Performance |
Play a jazzy music. Causes the enemies to become shy and shrinks themselves, making them smaller and weaker, and the invincible enemies would be... not-so invincible. This will reduce the Points earned by 33%, but can be useful if the player have troubles with areas flooded with annoying enemies. |
M7 Kaiju Play Found after completing Chisel Performance |
Play a Japanese Orchestra music, which is a tribute to kaiju movies' traditional music. Causes the enemies to grow twice as large and bosses being a bit more durable. Risky move, but it also increase the amount of points earned by 50%. |
M8 Classic Play Found after completing Mansion Performance |
Play an 8-bit music. This causes the enemies and bosses to have hit-by-hit HPs, and the character(s) have three lives, in which they earn more by collecting a Shiny Note. The life system means that the players had to be more careful, because once they runs out of lives, it is game over for them, and they will be kicked back to the starting point of the Performance! On the bright side, this gives 5,000 Points for each Performance cleared by using Classic Mode. |
M9 Mambo Play Found after completing Megamarket Performance |
Play a mambo music. This will cause Tempo and his friends to dance non-stop, and while the Parkour timing becomes somewhat stricter, the Combo bonuses can be earned halfway, as well as an addition of 25% of both Points and Doremis. Make sure to practice your timing before activating the Mumbo Mode. |
M10 Super Power Play Found in Eugenie's shop for 1,000 Doremis or getting 100% clear on any save file |
Play a music from Tempo (32X). Practically transport the players into an arcade station where they can play remastered levels of Tempo (32X). The player can come back to the normal world by playing the music again. |
M??? Final Play Gifted by Mr. Dargon |
Play a an epic ending music. In fact, the music becomes so loud that it causes King Dirge to go crazy and rocketed himself to the sky, exploding mid-air in the process! Only used as a finishing blow against King Dirge Sound. |
Objects[]
Unlike items, Objects are stationary and are either helpful or harmful to the player characters and/or the enemies.
Name | Description |
---|---|
Bouncing Clef | A G-Clef that bounces any player character, causing them to spin widly and real quick, and makes them immune to the Crystalized Notes' effects, as well as taking down enemies and pushing away invincible ones. |
Bow Clef | A C-Clef that darts the player character(s) into one direction into another. Smaller ones will shoot for smaller distances, while larger ones will be used to reach otherwise unaccessable areas. Darted players can eliminate enemies by contact and pushes away invincible enemies. |
Magical Clef | A F-Clef that transform all on-screen enemies, even invincible ones, into Notes. In addition, the players can produce more Points in a 2x multiplier for thirty seconds. |
Crystalized Flower | King Dirge Sound had used a special device in order to seal away note-producing flowers, transforming Notes produced from such flowers into electrifying crystals. A part of Crystalized Notes can only returns to normal if the players had managed to revert the Crystalized Flower back to normal. |
Water | While Tempo and his friends can swim, they must watch for their air meter, lest they will take damage, and they will end up drowning if they runs out of health. Most enemies not wearing scoba suits will be drowned, but enemies that can swim does not. The air meter will be unusued if using the Drencher candy, making traveling underwater less stressful as they will not require air bubbles in this case. |
Lava, Acid, other hazardous liquids | Those shall not be touched at all, even if you used a Drencher! And only a few enemies can safely swim in their associated hazardous liquid. Best to avoid them rather than stupidly jump into them. That is to say, they can be interacted in some way to another; lava can be turned into solid stone after the climate gets cold enough, while Tempo and his friends can become immune of acid once they obtained their Hazmat Suit. |
Spikes | Similarly to the hazardous liquids, Spikes can hurt both the players and a majority of the enemies. They can be destroyed by certain objects, and by being giant, but otherwise, avoid them at all cost. They can also burst bubbles, balloons and balloon-shaped enemies. |
Bombs | Typical cartoon bombs, but nevertheless dangerous to anybody. Once the cord is lit, throw it into an enemy or a fragile wall before it explodes! There are red variants that only explodes when making a hard contact with anything, and blue variants that are used as cannonballs and explode in just any contact at all, and cannot be swatted back. |
Piano Keys | Tempo and his friends can jump into them to get higher places. While Katy and Light doesn't need to jump into them does to their limitless flight, they might still need to jump into them, as colored Piano Keys will reveal more Notes, reveal secret paths, and other useful things. |
Music Pads and Dancing Pads |
The players can perform Music Play or Dance Play depended on the type of the Pad. Music Play will modify the mood of the level, be it making it easier, harder (these two possibility are available in the beginning of the game), faster, slower, or make the enemies sleepy, cowardly or cheery. Meanwhile, the Dancing Pad permits the players to earn more Doremis, distract the enemies, reveal secret paths, get the Super Transformation item earlier, and even bringing back fallen friends without the need to get back into a Checkpoint Door! |
Doors |
There are multiple type of doors; some are obviously seen and can be entered at any time, but others are hidden and must be found first. There are magical doors that transport you into an odd, ecliptic dimension where you can earn bonus Points, as well as playing minigames. They will disappears until you defeat the final boss. |
M.M. Mounting |
Major Minor's Mountings are stands that will transport the players in one spot into another in one area. Some of them are one-use, but none of them will leave you in an absolutely inescapable areas (you can always make a quick return to any Checkpoint in a Performance anyways). |
Boss Doors |
Those are where you will come face to face with one of the Worlds' bosses. You need to defeat enough enemies to have access into one Boss Door. Do not worry; there are always more defeatable enemies than the required amount of enemies. You can reenter Boss Doors to get a round two with the previously defeated bosses, but there are special blue Boss Doors that gives out a Vengeance (or Mecha-Werekaiju instead of Werekaiju Damsel) that are waiting for you in the Tower of Defiance. |
Changers[]
The Changers are special one-use candies that changes the property and ability of the current character. They are scattered throughout the levels, and can be eaten to power-up the player, with each of them having various purposes. The Changers can also be stacked, but not the same type. With the exception with the Upgrader, the Changers can be canceled by simply pressing the normally context-sensitive Y button or by getting a Super Transformation.
Name | Description |
---|---|
Upgrader | The Upgrader simply power-up one of the player's projectile. Up to three Upgraders can be used at once for one character, unless if the player died or stopped played, in which reset the Projectile to one. |
Runner | The Runner make the character to run twice as fast, climb up walls and ceiling, and can push enemies away by simply running. The flight speed is also doubled. However, the user is unable to stop running, which means that they should be used on linear paths. |
Screecher | The Screecher causes the character's voice to be much louder, stunning enemies. To do it, simply press down and then press the projectile button. The player can hold the button to charge it, for longer effect. Screeching can also break ices and glasses! |
Miniaturizer | The Miniaturizer shrinks the player's size to a quarter. While having the Health to be halved, the player becomes far more nimble and is able to fit in smaller and tighter paths. |
Gigantizer | The Gigantizer grows the player's size to twice the first time, to four times bigger the second time. Being giant is not convenient to pass thorough small paths, but the player's health is increased and the melee and projectile damage are also increased, with the second consumption doing twice the effect. In addition, the player will not flinch from most attacks and is immune to contact, and instead pushes enemies away. |
Spinner | Although the duration is temporary compared to others, the Spinner allows the player to spin non-stop, breaking weak walls and enemies out of the way. The spinning player is also immune to most of the projectiles! |
Drencher | The Drencher gives the user immunity to water-based attacks and can swim on water or underwater with unlimited air meter. The effect cannot be canceled when touching water, to avoid accidental drowning. |
Springer | The Springer gives the user increased jump height when using the A button. The effect is smaller on Katy and Light, but is more notable when used on Tempo and Goliath. |
Vampirizer | Gives sharp teeth to the player (although it is just aesthetic) and recover health when using contact attacks on enemies. Good for levels where survivability is a priority. |
Reflector | The player is able to reflect the enemies' projectiles by holding down. Reflected projectiles do less damage, but travels faster than normal. Helpful to deal with enemies that shoot like crazy! |
Clothing[]
Clothing is an aesthetic customization for the player characters, which changes their appearance or give them extra clothing. While having no effect in gameplay in general, a very few treasures requires the correct clothing combination. Some clothing can be obtained early without any purchase with amiibos, but are available in the post-end anyways.

Extra Modes[]
Time Attack[]
Time Attack is one of the gamemodes accessed in the Extra Modes. Unlike the Time Trial found in the main mode, the players instead had to complete the levels under the specific amount of time. Puzzles are made easier in order to avoid the players wasting time by bad luck. The levels will end immediately once the player reaches where the Melody Note or Boss Door would be. The boss battles are timed in a different way.
There are also five sub-modes in this mode, and each of the level's difficulty have separate leaderboard.
Amataur
The levels are simplified and the enemies will be slower, weaker and dumber, and the timer is less strict.
Hot Rod
The levels are simplified but the enemies will be more aggressive, and the timer is more strict.
Regular
The levels are unchanged and the enemies' behavior is the same.
Rough Road
The levels are more challenging but the enemies will be slower, weaker and dumber, while the timer is less strict.
Crazy!
The levels are more challenging and the enemies will be more aggressive, and the timer is more strict. The hardest sub-mode.
Unlocked once the player had completed all levels in any sub-modes.
Boss Rumble[]
Boss Rumble is a non-stop boss rush that involves the player taking all of the game's bosses, one by one. The players will recover a specific amount of HP depended on the sub-mode, and each sub-modes will give a certain amount of specific bosses the players had to take on. Eliminated players cannot return in this mode. This mode is only available once the player(s) had defeated King Dirge Sound, the final boss of the game.
Lite
The players only needs to face seven regular bosses, such as Da Boot and Scitis-Bot 2000. 50% HP recovered after each round.
Final Fours Goes First
The players will go straight up facing the four last bosses; Werekaiju Damsel, Scitis, Silence Ship Core and King Dirge Sound. 33% HP recovered after each round.
Regular
The order of bosses is at normal, and the final battle ends with King Dirge Sound himself. 33% HP recovered after each round.
Revenge
The order is the same, but now the players had to take on the rematch version of each bosses. As usual, the final battle will be against King Dirge Sound. Only 20% HP recovered after each round.
Madness!
The bosses are on their rematch version, and their order is at random! And this time you can only recover HP by the Notes that drops by Mussis! Even after defeating them all, there is one extra boss to deal with...
Unlocked once the player had completed Regular or Revenge.
Challenge Mode[]
The Challenge Mode involves completing one given task into another, and the gamemode is a competitive type, which means that the players will be against each others. There can also be more than one same character, and the player can change the color of their character (which are green, pink, blue, yellow, red and purple).
The goal of the Challenge Mode is to complete as many given tasks as possible, which goes from finding a specific Note, defeating a wanted enemy such as a Mussi enemy or a Scitech enemy, or defeating the boss. The players who had successfully completed the most tasks wins the game.
Quick Match
The challenge goes from two to ten challenges depended on the player's settings, and the tasks are always fast and short.
Greedy Groove
The goal is to collect as much Doremis as possible, and the players are awarded a specific amount of Doremis depended on the difficulty of the task. However, shall one player get knocked out, they will drop Doremis which allows other players to steal them, so surviving is often a priority!
Wanted
The challenge focuses entirely on defeating the wanted enemies. After every four wanted enemy, a wanted boss will show up, so keep on your toes.
Recklessness
The challenge involves only completing a small level under a minute. Here's the catch to make it why it is called Recklessness; you can push each others into abysses and other hazards, and summons enemies for your support by pressing Y when available.
All-Around
The challenge have tasks of all kind, and there is no limit. Just like Recklessness, the players can summon enemies to attack each others, making some tasks more difficult than it should.
Endurance[]
The Endurance is similar to Challenge Mode, but instead of completing tasks, the players have to survive as long as they are able to during a marathon of dangers and enemies, and players can hurt each others too. Knocked out players who runs out of lives cannot respawn, and the last player standing will win this mode.
The player one can adjust the amount of Health (from 1% to 500%), Enemy/Hazard/Item/Boss Frequency (1% to 200% for each of them), Lives (from 1 to 999 or Unlimited) and Time Limit (from 1 to 99 minutes or Unlimited) before starting any matches.
Annoyance
The Easy Mode of Endurance. Only weak enemies and hazards appears, which means the players should focus on dealing with each others.
Dead Beat
Hazards are One-Hit KO regardless of the amount of Health settled, so avoid them at all cost! Most of them are stuck on the ground, but to avoid breaking the game, the flight can only be done for four seconds and a cooldown of two seconds.
Average
Regular Endurance. Nothing changes much in here.
Boss Madness
The match starts with two or three bosses, and more bosses appears to replace any defeated bosses. Best to avoid them while you can!
Changer Factory
Changers will spawn constantly, so the players had to use their advantage to the maximum in order to dominate the others. There is an exclusive but hinderful Changer called Bad Changer, which will gives the opposite version of what the Changer type would do (i.e. the Drencher will make water explosion which damage everyone within the explosion's vicinity).
Funkiness Meter[]
The Funkiness Meter put emphasis on the Parkour and Combo mechanics, in which the timing and skill become even more important. Placed in either a race-like course or an arena, and the player who reaches 100% (or higher or lower, from 10% to 1000%) will win the game.
Amateur League
The penalty for dying is non-existent, and thus allow for some practice.
Intermediate League
The penalty for dying only reduces the % by 2%, and the obstacles are minimal.
Advanced League
The penalty for dying reduces the % by 5%, and the obstacles are infrequent but not rare. Tougher enemies will start to appear once any player had reached 50%.
Expert League
The penalty for dying reduces the % by 7%, and the obstacles are frequent. Bosses will start to appear once any player had reached 50%.
Championship
The penalty for dying reduces the % by 10%, and the obstacles are everywhere. Bosses and tough enemies appears right from the start, so keep up on your groove!
Trivia[]
- Although Tempo and Katy had appeared in Boss Battles beforehand, it is the first full-fledged Tempo game since Super Tempo, with a sequel gap of around eleven years.
- The game is revealed to be the first of the upcoming SEGA's Classics Reboot Universe, which involve many forgotten SEGA franchises being revived by various companies. The director of the game, Samtendo09 (t∣b∣c), commented that he proudly inspired a few others to revive some other SEGA franchises on their own.
