Smash the Flag is a new game mode in Super Smash Bros. V. It functions very similarly to a Capture the Flag type game mode. Teams must be equal, must have at least 3 players on each, and up to 4 players can be on one team. The camera is placed at vertical view behind the fighters so players may have to adapt to the controls. The camera spans the whole stage if played locally. This leads to less tactical and strategy based play as you can see where everybody is right in front of you. Although the camera spans the whole stage, and the stages designed for this mode aren’t really large, it really shouldn’t be a problem to keep track of your character.
Fighters must fight to obtain the opposing team’s flags then return them to their area to score. Each fighter has your stamina shown opposed to the percentage being shown, 50 stamina, and when your stamina hits 0, you explode and respawn back at your base. If you’re holding a flag and your stamina hits 0 the flag is dropped and must be either picked up by the opposing team to be returned automatically or picked up by a teammate for them to continue in capturing it. The characters keep all their gameplay elements (movesets, taunts, etc.), items are always on and only a select batch of items are used. The only settings that can be changed are the score needed to win and the match time. The options available are 5, 10, and 15. Time options are 10 minutes, 20 minutes, or no time at all.
