Image Name First Appearance (video game) Description
Mario Arcade Donkey Kong The main hero of the Mushroom Kingdom. He frequently makes use of power-ups; such as Super Mushrooms and Fire Flowers, on his many adventures. Mario has appeared in more than 200 games, and has become Nintendo's flagship character. Aside from adventuring, he has also participated in sports and racing competitions.
Dr. Mario NES Dr. Mario Mario as a doctor. Dr. Mario's job consists of defeating Viruses with Megavitamins; line up a Virus with three capsules of the same colour, and it gets defeated. He sometimes works alongside his nurse Princess Peach. In Dr. Luigi, Dr. Mario was absent, but the game introduced the titular younger brother as a doctor.
Super Luigi !
Luigi Arcade Mario Bros. Mario's younger, taller, lesser-known brother. Luigi mostly spends time in his sibling's shadow, and frequently ventures alongside him. However, Luigi got a starring role in Mario is Missing!, where he had to rescue his brother and the planet Earth from Bowser. In 2013, to celebrate 30 years since his debut, Luigi gained much more recognition, and many Luigi-themed games and merchandise were released. In fact, the year was dubbed the "Year of Luigi".

Waluigi N64 Mario Tennis A tall, skinny, cunning man who thinks of Luigi as his main rival. Waluigi often performs schemes with Wario. His rivalry with Luigi has been going on since the Nintendo 64 days, and will seemingly do anything to come out on top.
Princess Peach Artwork - Super Mario 3D World
Peach NES Super Mario Bros. The princess of the Mushroom Kingdom. She is frequently kidnapped by Bowser and the Koopa Troop, but is always rescued, usually by Mario. As her name may suggest, she has an affinity for pink, and is normally a typical damsel in distress. In Super Princess Peach, however, she got a starring role; in this game, she was tasked with rescuing Mario, Luigi, and several Toads from Bowser.
1186px-Bowser HUGE
Bowser NES Super Mario Bros. The King of the Koopas, and Mario's arch nemesis. Bowser frequently causes trouble to the Mushroom Kingdom, and has made something of a career in nabbing Princess Peach. Mario almost always beats him when they battle though. Bowser is capable of breathing fire, and has an enormous number of minions at his disposal.
Bowser Koopa jr
Bowser Jr. GCN Super Mario Sunshine The mischievous son of Bowser. Bowser Jr. takes off after his dad, and shares his desire to defeat Mario. In his debut appearance, Bowser Jr. turned into a Mario look-alike and caused trouble. Junior seems to be the Koopa King's second-in-command, as when Bowser was injured in New Super Mario Bros., Bowser Jr. lead the Koopa Troop.
Daisy GB Super Mario Land The princess of Sarasaland. She first met Mario in Super Mario Land, where he rescued her from the evil alien Tatanga. Since then, she has become a Mario series regular. Koopa Troopa SMBU
Koopa Troopa NES Super Mario Bros. Fairly common enemies that follow the orders of Bowser. The colour of a Koopa Troopa's shell determines how it attacks; green-shelled Koopas walk across a straight path (if an abyss enters their path, they just drop down into it). The red-shelled variety are a bit smarter, as they turn around and walk the other way when their path ends. Since their debut, Koopa Troopas have been popping up all over the place.
Piranha Plant Artwork - Super Mario 3D World
Piranha Plant NES Super Mario Bros. Vicious plants that attack anyone who comes near. They mostly lurk inside Warp Pipes, and hate fireballs. DryBones SMB
Dry Bones NES Super Mario Bros. 3 Undead Koopa Troopas. When stomped upon, they fall apart, but quickly reassemble. In some games, they even throw their own bones to attack Mario and co. They have appeared in a large number of spin-offs, and despite being undead, their persistence lives on...
Bullet Bill NES Super Mario Bros. A bullet fired from a cannon caled a Bill Blaster. Bullet Bills fly across in straight lines, and are easily identified by their angry eyes. Although they are immune to fireballs, a stomp will defeat them.
200px-Hammer Bro. Party 8
Hammer Bro. NES Super Mario Bros. Hammer-throwing elites of the Koopa Troop. They also jump while throwing hammers, so attacking them can be tricky. Unlike other Koopa species, Hammer Bros. don't retreat into their shells when jumped upon. They are mostly found in pairs.
