Super Smash Bros. Riot is the newest and 5th installment of the Super Smash Bros. series and the second one being released for the Wii U, being the first game in the series to be released in the same console as its predecessor. It's being developed by Sora Ltd. and Shooting Star Studios. The game's exact release date is still unknown, but it's assumed it's going to be released at late 2015.
Gameplay[]
The gameplay is very similar to both Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, especially the Wii U version, but mostly because of controls and in terms of graphics. The pace of battles in the game as been confirmed to be close to that of Super Smash Bros. Melee's, being rather fast-paced, which leads to a more competitive play. Elements and features such as the Final Smashes and the Footstool Jumping returns in the game, and unlike the last installment, the tripping feature returns from Brawl. Other older features such as Wall Jumping (and wall cling) and the Tether Recovery return in this game. Unlike the last installment, which had a version for the Wii U, this one doesn't change its roster with another version of the game, which means that the roster is considerably larger.
The game shares the same basic controls as its predecessors, especially Super Smash Bros. for Wii U, as both are for the same console. The goal of the game is the same as the other installments, to attack and damage opponents to increase their damage percentage. The higher the percentage is, the faster players can be sent flyng from the stage. Players must knock others off the stage to perform a KO, which gives them a score which will determine the winner at the end. Basic moves can be done either on land or in mid-air using the button, while using the causes the character to perform Special Moves. Different variations of moves can be done if pressing these buttons while tilting the , and depending to where it's tilted a different move will be performed.
An important move is the shield which every character can do to block most attacks. They can also dodge attacks by tilting down or at the sides while they are using the shield, it can also be performed in mid-air to dodge incoming attacks while the player is jumping or falling. However, If the shield is too small, the player is vulnerable to attacks and if the shield breaks, the player is momentarily stunned. The player can also do grabs while shielding. Once the player has grabbed an opponent he or she can either pummel the opponent with the attack button or throw the opponent with the . Opponents can break free of grabs by moving the control stick and mashing buttons, but the higher the percentage, the longer it takes for opponents to be released.
A new feature is the Riot Move, which is a special attack that can be executed whenever a small bar under the character's damage percentage is fullfilled. Once it is, the character will be able to do the move, which is an unique attack that causes special effects and a high knockback and damage deal percentage. It replaces only the neutral Special Move and is often very effective, in some cases more than a Final Smash. Once done, the bar goes empty again. The bar slightly fills itself depending on how much damage the character is dealing to others. Getting highly damaged also decreases the bar's energy. The Riot Move feature can also be turned on or off in the battle's configuration.
Another new feature is Climbing. As the name implies, certain characters are able to climb on walls, so reaching an edge instantly is not obligatory for them as they can climb up to reach it. However, climbing also has its limit, if the characters don't reach an edge in time, they stop climbing. However they still can perform a recovery move to help them reach the edge easily. Crawling also makes a return, which works similar except they don't climb walls, but insteal crawl on the land.
In addition to the Grab move, players can now perform an Aerial Grab. This new move allows characters to grab their opponents in mid-air, in which they will fall in a flying suplex way, and the grabbing character can subsequently punch and damage its victim as they fall. Like the land grab, the grabbed character can break free if continuosly pressing buttons and tilting the control stick, if that happens before they land, both will fall normally, but if not the grabbing character will fall on its opponent and cause higher damage. The damage also depends on the size of the characters, in case a heavier character grabs a lighter one, they will much more damage than if it was viceversa.
Additionally, the move customization returns from Nintendo 3DS / Wii U, with some returning from said game as well as a few new move customizations which increases the movement variation in the game. Some characters just gain special effects in their abilities, while others obtain completely different abilities.
Online play is also considerably similar to both Brawl and 3DS / Wii U. When playing with friends, players can customize the rules to their liking. If not playing with friends, three modes are available, which are the returning For Fun and For Glory, and a new mode called For All, with the latter being a rather tournament-like mode, in which players team up with others in order to rank up to win the tournament against other teams. In all of these modes, losses and victories are recorded, and can be shared with other players. Also, the "Global Smash Power" rank returns, which is used to determine how strong the player is compared to others around the world.
The game has various controller methods, most of these being from the last installment, which are: the Wii U GamePad, the Wii U Pro Controller and the Nintendo GameCube Controller. In addition, both the Wii Remote sideways and the Wii Remote + Nunchuck Attachment can be used as well, all controllers in the same manner as the other games. Button configuration can be done as well in this game, in the same manner as Brawl.
Playable Characters[]
The game is confirmed to have a total of 85 playable characters counting DLC (94 if transformations, Kalos Trainer's pokémon and Mii Fighters are counted separately). Unlike the last installment, transformations return, making Sheik and Zero Suit Samus non-standalone characters once again, along with a new transformation for Bowser, Dry Bowser. A total of 12 additional characters were confirmed to be downloadable into the game. Some downloadable characters come with other elements such as additional Assist Trophies and/or Items. After downloading them, their series is added to the All-Stars Mode and they can be fought as well.

Story Mode (Clash of Dimensions)[]
Clash of Dimensions is the Story Mode of the game, similarly to the Adventure Mode from Brawl, The Subspace Emissary. The story takes place in various locations from Nintendo series, it has a similar length to that of the Subspace Emissary and co-op multiplayer is optional.
Like in Brawl, the story is set in The World of Trophies. One day, a dark cloud of ice arrives the world's lands and starts causing havoc by spawning armies of ice soldiers. The ice soldiers and the cloud are commanded by a mystical demon, Lissandra, who wants to turn the different dimensions into ice and make it her own dimension as an ice empire. It's up to the heroes of Nintendo to unite forces and defeat this evil entity.
Classic Mode[]
This mode returns in this game as well, acting the same way. In this mode players pick a character and then go through several fights with an specific order. These fights also have certain conditions, sometimes the player is teamed up with another character and fight another duo, a giant version of a character, multiple versions of a character, etc. When a level is finished, the score is added up, and coins are earned. These can be used in the Whack-a-Trophy. Clearing this mode will give the player a trophy of the character used to complete it.

Bosses[]
Boss | Description | |
---|---|---|
Metal Mario | Metal Mario is a spin-off from Metal Mario, which is a form of Mario, rather than a distinct character. Metal Mario acts pretty much like Mario when he grabs a Metal Box, meaning he has the same abilities but being quite slower, having low jumps and recovers but causing higher damage. | |
Metal Luigi | Metal Luigi is the metallic counterpart of Luigi, like Metal Mario does with Mario. Once the player has unlocked Luigi, Metal Luigi makes the battle harder, because instead of battling one metal brother, the player has to battle the two metal brothers, who gang up on the player. Like Mario's metal counterpart, Metal Luigi is heavier than the regular Luigi and uses the same moves as his counterpart. | |
Master Hand | Master Hand is the right hand and is referred as the "manifestation of creative spirit" in the Smash Bros. universe. Its existence is shadowed and still a mystery, and thus not much is known about it. | |
Crazy Hand | Crazy Hand is the left hand and is referred as the "manifestation of destructive spirit". In Classic Mode, Crazy Hand only appears alongside Master Hand if the player arrives the final stage with no continues, on Hard or higher difficulty and in nine minutes or less. However, if the player loses against them, Crazy Hand will not appear to assist Master Hand. |
Adventure Mode[]
This mode returns from Super Smash Bros. Melee. It contains various stages where the player fights against other characters, but also takes place in various unique side-scrolling stages to Adventure Mode, similarly to Story Mode. Like in the other modes, the player can choose a difficulty (very easy, easy, normal, hard or very hard) and the number of lives which goes from 1 to 5.
When the player runs out of stock lives during the mode's progress, they can use a continue to gain all lives again at the cost of some coins, but a penalty is received (it is Continuation, which subtracts 25,000 from the player's current score). Coins are won in any regular battle by performing Smash Attacks, or in the Bonus Stages of the Classic Mode. They can also be used to pay for the Continue in the Classic and All-Star mode and in the Whack-a-Trophy mode.
Beating this mode rewards the player with a trophy of the current character's Smash information.

However, the player doesn't need to KO them as they don't have a damage percentage but a health percentage, like Master Hand and Crazy Hand. Defeating these forms rewards the player with 100000 points and a trophy of the villain's final form they defeated. |
Bosses[]
Boss | Description | |
---|---|---|
Giga Bowser | Giga Bowser is a strange mutation of Bowser, where he appears to be much larger in size and having slightly different details on his body and having a more intimidating sight to behold, making him look more ferocious. His moveset is similar to that of Bowser, but they have special effects, such as freezing, burning, electric and even dark magic effects over opponents. He is, however, kinda slow and hardly moves from his spot, but he does very high damage and it's hard to knock him away. | |
Beast Ganon | Beast Ganon is a transformation of Ganondorf in the Legend of Zelda series. Ganon is really big, and he mainly uses dark magic and force to attack, like Ganondorf. Ganon tends to ram himself on the player, doing high damage and knockback. He plays more offensive than defensive. He can also roar and paralyze the player, which puts them into disadvantage. | |
Majora's Wrath | Majora's Wrath is the final form the Majora's Mask takes. Majora's Wrath is a very terrifying entity which also relies more on offensive play than defensive, though it's also able to move really quickly to dodge attacks. It mostly uses its tentacles to attack in various disturbing ways and positions, and it's also able to slow down opponents with single hits. The tip of its tentacles cause the most damage and they can also spit spiked tops that spin around. | |
Meta Ridley | Meta Ridley is Ridley rebuilt and reborn through Space Pirate technology. Despite having a similar moveset to Ridley, Meta Ridley can perform moves that Ridley is not able to do normally in battle. He is able to fly off-screen and sweep down with his tail. He can also do most moves Ridley and Meta Ridley did as bosses in Brawl. He's very quick and is often flying, so players have to rely on aerial combat. | |
Possessed Dedede | Possessed Dedede, as the name implies, is King Dedede being possessed by a dark entity, namely Dark Matter. In this form, King Dedede takes a very dark coloration, almost entirely black with shiny white eyes. Possessed Dedede is also considerably bigger and tends to levitate around. Unlike King Dedede, he doesn't use his hammer, but ranged dark magic instead to attack players from afar. Occasionally, Dark Matter's eye will show on Dedede's belly, shooting lasers and dark magic blasts. The eye sometimes also turns into a mouth with spiky teeth, used to ram himself on the players and bite them. | |
Armored Mewtwo | Armored Mewtwo is the one that appears only in the anime, making this his first appearance in a game. Armored Mewtwo is considerably stronger and has a great defense, he's also heavier but floats around and jumps higher, much more than Mewtwo. He uses unique attacks such as projectiles and other psychic abilities. Despiete being heavier, he is very quick. He will also try to attack the player in a fast speed to KO them. |
All-Star Mode []
Like in the other installments, in this mode the player fights against all of the characters in the game, which means that it's unlocked by unlocking all of the characters excluding DLC. However, if DLC is downloaded into the game, these will appear as well. It's more similar to Brawl's All-Star Mode rather than in 3DS / Wii U, as it can also be played with another player as co-op, and because opponents are sorted by Series rather than in a random order or by first appearance. No more than two foes appear at the time. Beating the mode rewards the player with a a trophy of the current character performing their Final Smash. Also, if All-Star is beaten with Co-op mode, Final Smash Trophies of both characters are rewarded.
The order of the fights are also the order the games came out by date. Also, the Super Mario series is fought twice, because even though Geno belongs to the series, he's a third party character and therefore he's fought separately from the other Mario characters. Also, the Mega Man series and the Final Fantasy series will sometime swap order, because they were released at the same date (same year, day and month). The same occurs with both the Yoshi series and the F-Zero series.
- Series marked with * means the characters and stages they represent are DLC and therefore don't appear in the list until they are downloaded.
Events[]
Events are pre-defined missions that have to be completed by the player. These mostly consist of beating certain opponents. Various events have a pre-selected character, while others have the option of selecting the desired character to use. Each mission is represented by a preview screenshot. Unlike in Brawl, the player cannot select the difficulty of each event, instead, the difficulty increases with each event, usually one being harder than the later, much like Melee. Some events are also available in co-op, so a second player can help clear them.
For a list of the game's events, check: Super Smash Bros. Riot/Events
Stadium[]
This mode has various mini-games to play. These are:
Home-Run Contest
Home-Run Contest remains quite unchanged from previous installments. The player simply has to select a character and has 10 seconds to damage the Sandbag (with a shield surrounding the platform to prevent characters from accidentally pushing Sandbag off the platform) and then within ten seconds the player has to knock Sandbag out of the stage as further as they can by using a bat. Rewards can be obtained by reaching certain records.
Target Smash!!
Unlike in Brawl, there is no longer a different stage design for each difficulty, but rather a different and unique stage for each character, like in SSB and Melee. However, difficulty can still be set, and that will decrease the time limit for each difficulty, making it harder for the player to break all the targets. The difficulties are the same, Very Easy - Easy - Normal - Hard - Very Hard.
Board the Platforms!
Board the Platforms! returns from Super Smash Bros.. In this minigame players have to land on platforms in a unique stage, different to these from Target Smash!!. The number of platforms will increase depending on the set difficulty. It starts in Very Easy with only 5 platforms, and another 5 are added with each difficulty. This mode is unlockable, players need to complete Classic Mode with all default characters to unlock it.
- Very Easy - 5 Platforms
- Easy - 10 platforms
- Normal - 15 Platforms
- Hard - 20 Platforms
- Very Hard - 25 Platforms
Multi-Man Riot
The Multi-Man mini-game returns in this game, now known as Muti-Man Riot. Here, players will play against the Space Souls, which are galactic entities that have resemblance to certain characters and battle identically to the character they resemble. For instance, Red Space Souls act like Captain Falcon, Blue Space Souls act like Zelda, Green Space Souls act like Mario and Yellow Space Souls act like Kirby.
There are several kinds of battles the player can do, these are:
- 10-Man Riot: KO 10 Space Souls.
- 100-Man Riot: KO 100 Space Souls
- 3-Minute Riot: Fight against endless Space Souls for 3 minutes.
- 15-Minute Riot: Fight against endless Space Souls for 15 minutes.
- Endless Riot: Fight against endless Space Souls until the player gets KO'd.
- Cruel Riot: Fight against endless, overpowered Space Souls, until the player gets KO'd. There are no items in Cruel Riot.
Rewards can be obtained by doing certain tasks.
Boss Rush
This mode is quite similar to All-Star Mode, except players have to fight against the Bosses in the game, instead of other characters. Unlike All-Star Mode, players only have one life, and if they lose they have to start all over again as they are sent back to the Character Selection screen. The character can heal by using one of three Heart Containers in this mode. Also, the Bosses are ordered randomly (except for the final boss, Lissandra, who is always the last one). If the mode is cleared, the time taken is recorded for the high score. If not, the number of bosses defeated will be.
It is unlocked by clearing Clash of Dimensions for the first time, and by defeating Classic Mode at least once. Crazy Hand does not have to be fought to unlock the game mode. Also, like All-Star mode, Boss Battle Mode can be played with two players simultaneously. If done so, there will be five Heart Containers total at the healing area.
Additionally, players will fight all bosses in Story Mode, along with one from Classic Mode and a random one from Adventure Mode, in random order.
Training
This function, as the name implies, is to allow the players to train their skills and learn to play properly or experiment with certain functions and/or items. The player can practice against one to three CPUs, and can select if they move or not at all. Players can also test items, and use Smash Balls to practice Finals Smashes. The motion can also be set from slow to quick, and also pre-define the player's and CPU's hit damage.
Group[]
Riot[]
It is very similar to the previous games. Here players fight in a 2-4 battle, being all humans or CPUs. Players choose their characters (and change to alternate costumes if they want to) and then the stage they want to fight on. After that, they appear on the stage, with their respective entrances while the announcer counts, and then the battle starts. Players can also modify the battle, and determine if it's with time limit, life stocks, Coins, etc., as well as other functions such as the Handicap. Item configuration can be made as well, to determine which items the players want in battle and which not, or not have items at all.
For characters with multiple forms, such as Zelda/Sheik or Samus/Zero Suit Samus, the player is able to choose which form they want to start the battle in the Character Selection screen. However, they still can change their forms in-battle. This doesn't work with alternate costumes though, as players can choose it but they work like color palettes, as they can't change in-battle.
Rules[]
As mentioned before, the player can adjust the battle's rules by selecting or changing certain options, the main of these are:
- Time: With Time players simply gain score with each KO they do, and lose one if they are KO'd, fall or self-destruct. The one with the most points at the end wins the match. If there's a tien, a Sudden Death will happen, where the tied characters have to attempt to KO the other one, and each one starts with 300% of damage. The last one standing wins.
- Stock: Players have a set number of lives. They lose lives when they are knocked out. The last player standing wins. Optionally, a time limit can be specified. When the time has run out, the player with the most lives wins. This mode is featured throughout the Classic and All-Star Mode, and there is always a set time limit in these modes.
- Coin: Fighters collect coins to increase their score, which is displayed above their damage gauge. Bronze coins are worth 1 point, silver coins are worth 3 points, and gold coins are worth 6. There are also bills. Coins are created when a fighter receives damage. The value of the coins corresponds to the strength of the attack. However, these coins are not subtracted from the victim's score. Fighters have unlimited lives, but their score is cut in half when they fall off the stage. Whoever has the highest score when time runs out wins the match.
- Customized Moveset: As the name implies, players play with their respectibe customized movesets rather than using the original ones. Players can also determine if they want to play with time limit, stock or coins with customized moves.
More Rules can be unlocked by players score 200 KOs in Group mode. Players can set time limit for a stock match, turn on team attack, turn off pausing, enable score display, or hide percentages. When all stages are unlocked, players can adjust which stage is allowed to be selected at random.
Special Riot[]
Similar to the other games, Special Riot allows for more entertaining and challenging battles against friends. Using this they can customize battles themselves by selecting certain status changes, sizes, effects, stamina and other appearance differences to players, right from the start of the battle to the end. The customization options are:
Name | Options | Description |
---|---|---|
Stamina | %300 | Everyone starts with %300, as if in a Super Sudden Death. |
Stamina | Players can choose the stamina (from 1HP to 300HP) and they all fight, hitting each other depletes their HP. When someone reaches 0HP, they automatically lose. The last one standing wins. | |
Size | Giant | All players are giant, as if they had taken Super Mushrooms. Handicaps don't work properly for this game mode. |
Tiny | All players are tiny, as if they had taken Poison Mushrooms. Handicaps don't work properly for this game mode. | |
Head | Bunny | All players wear Bunny Hoods in the whole match, always having its effects. |
Flower | All players have have the flower effect, as if they were hit by the Lip's Stick. | |
Body | Metal | All players are metallic, as if they used a Metal Box, having its effects the whole match. |
Invisible | All players are invisible, as if they used a Cloaking Device. | |
Status | Curry | All players have the Superspicy Curry effect status the whole match. |
Reflect | All players have can reflect all projectiles, as if they used a Franklin Badge. | |
Gravity | Light | All players jump higher, fall slower, gain better recoveries, are less vulnerable to chain throws, and have decreased vertical momentum canceling abilities |
Heavy | All players jump shorter, fall faster, gain shorter recoveries, are more vulnerable to chain throws, and have increased vertical momentum canceling abilities | |
Speed | Slow | The game is a lot slower, making it easier to execute and react on attacks. |
Fast | The game plays a lot faster, making it hard for players to execute and react on attacks. | |
Camera | Fixed | The camera works zoomed in more than usual. |
Angled | Makes the camera work angled during the match | |
Hazard (New) | Bob-ombs | Makes it always rain Bob-ombs on the stage. |
Space Souls | Space Souls always spawn on the stage. They can be easily KO'd but they do decent damage. |
Tournament[]
Works exactly like past installments. Players are able to battle in a tourney, that can have up to thirty-two players, and must fight their way to the championship to eventually earn a cup if they win. It is possible to play with friends, or battle CPUs. It is selected how many humans are among the competing players. The stage selection mode is selected; by choosing a stage at random on that every match of the tournament is played, choosing a new random stage for each battle, selecting the stage for the tournament in the beginning or choosing a new stage for each match of the tournament. The level of additional computer opponents can be set from 1 to 9, applied to all, or to a random value applied to each CPU player. The rules settings for the battles have the same choices as the VS mode. Each player chooses their character and the tournament begins.
The only difference is that in this game, the number of entrants now can be up to 54. It also lets players put in more characters on stage than controllers (such as four characters when there are only two controllers playing).
Special Modes[]
Smash Run[]
Smash Run works the same as in Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS. Players travel in a maze-like map while fighting several enemies from different franchises. Players can also equip powers before entering a fight, such as speed boosts, attack boosts, healing, etc. Or equipping one or a certain amount of items at a time depending on their weight.
While fighting, players can collect several items similar to patches. These patches can increase attack power, special attack power, jumping, or movement speed; there are also special patches which increase all stats.
Smash Up![]
Smash Up! is a new mode where players are inside of a maze stage. Players will find different obstacles and enemies (some enemies are different from the ones in Smash Run) and they will also find a few powers or items to equip. It's a large maze, so whenever two opponents cross their ways, they will fight in a random stage, while the others spectate the fight. If three find each other, then the match is gonna be 3-player and the same happens if all players find each other in their ways. The one that wins the battle gets the most points, while the others get less points depending on which position they were left.
Each maze has a certain amount of time for players to collect their items and powers, defeat enemies, obtain trophies, CDs and other stuff, or to fight other opponents. When time limit ends, the player that has the most points wins the round, and they are sent to the next maze map. (number of maze maps can be customized from 2 to 8 in one game).
This game mode can be played online, and the player that gets the most points at the end gets most of the rewards (the ones for winning + the ones he/she has collected throughout the game) while the others just get the rewards they found in the maps.
Tower of Smash[]
Tower of Smash is another new mode. It takes place in a 100-Floor Tower, with each floor containing three doors with windows on top of them showing the character that you will fight against. The player chooses one door, and fights against that character in an 1 vs. 1 one stock match, in a random stage. Already set special rules can be experienced during these fights, such as slow/fast mode, giant/tiny, Pokéball-only item match, etc.
Before starting this game mode, you can choose up to 5 characters (all must be different), all of them counting as lives. You can only heal every 10 floors (in floors 10, 20, 30, 40, etc) and you can switch between characters before starting a battle. The more floors you consecutively clear, the better your rewards. However, if you lose all your fighters (lives), you will have to start from the 10th, 20th, 30th, ... floors if you reached that far before.
The last floor in every 10 floors (9th, 19th, 29th,...) are Boss Battles, containing special bosses from different franchises different from the ones seen in other modes.
Special Orders[]
Returns from the last installment. This mode includes two more varieties:
- Master Orders: In this mode you choose a set amount of matches and fight Master Hand at the end. You get rewards whenever you win the game.
- Crazy Orders: This mode works different from Master Orders. Crazy Hand's challenges are not free, they require you to pay gold. After paying, you will fight different challenges and fight Crazy Hand at the end. This mode is an "all or nothing", so if you lose you get no rewards.
8-Smash[]
Returning from the last game, 8-Smash allows players to play against up to 8 friends locally. Some stages are revamped and expanded to allow the 8 player frenzy, while some other stages are restricted. Most of the stages available for this mode are usually the larger stages.
Vault[]
Various content in the game can be seen here, as well as content unlocked by doing certain tasks in the game.
Trophies and Stickers[]
Trophies
Trophies return int his game as well. They act the same way, and some trophies are rarer than others, with some being easier to obtain than others. Trophies are stored with little preview images to search easier through them. They are also ordered by either series or by function (playable characters, unplayable characters, items, etc.). When a trophy is selected, a description of the character or object will be portrayed. There is a total of 630 trophies in the game. The player can also use Trophy Stands to turn enemies into trophies, in Story Mode, Adventure Mode and Smash Run.
Stickers
Stickers return in this game as well. They have the same purpose, they are used to power-up characters in Story Mode (Clash of Dimensions). Stickers are stored in an album too, and they can be ordered by series or the order they were found. Similar to the Trophy Hoard, stickers can be used to decorate a screen. Different backgrounds can be selected, and pictures can be taken.
Whack-a-Trophy[]
In this new mode, players must use the mallet to smack trophies and obtain them. For each whack, 5 Coins are taken. There are various trophies that will appear repeatedly, these are the most common trophies. Semi-Common Trophies will appear once in a while and Uncommon trophies rarely appear. There is a very low percentage that a rare trophy will pop out, and the rarer ones tend to appear when the mini-game gets a faster pace. Sometimes Bombs will appear instead, and if the player touches them a determined amount of coins will be taken without gaining anything.
Stage Builder[]
This function also returns with a few new additions and improvements. When making the stage, players first pick the size of the stage, and then creating a background pattern, as well as the music from the game that will play on the stage. Once done, the player can start adding pieces to the stage. The stage parts have been majorly improved, with more platforms and tilesets to make it more realistic and less simple if the player desires to. Grass tiles, water, lava, metallic tiles and other stuff have been added for more variety and customization. Various elements from existing stages can be used as well, and hazards can be added too.
After building a fraction of the stage, it can be tested out before being saved. This can be done several times, if it is necessary. After the stage is finished, the name and comment can be chosen, as well as an option to change the music of the stage. It can be sent to other players via Nintendo Network connection, but cannot ever be played on using the online connection.
Challenges[]
Challenge mode returns with the same methods. Player can obtain Trophies, Stickers and CDs by clearing them, as well as Stages and Stage Builder parts. The prizes are hidden in different crystals, and they can be obtained by clearing their respective challenges. When one challenge is cleared and the prize is obtained, the prizes near it will be visible and their challenge will be displayed. Occassionally players gain a Mallet to break a crystal and gain the prize without having to clear the challenge, but some prizes cannot be broken, as in the case of the Bosses trophies.
Album[]
Here players can see the screenshots they have taken when pausing the game. Players can save the screenshots in the Wii U's internal memory or an SD card. Unlike in other games, the player is also able to send screenshots online to other players via Ninntendo Network connection.
Replays[]
Replays also return with the same function. With it players can see recorded matches. It can be used on a single Riot in Group Mode, Target Smash!!, Home-run Contest, and Multi-man Riot. Now the time of replay can be up to five minutes. They can be accesed and replayed in the Vault and can be sent to other players online. These can be saved in a SD card as well.
Options[]
Here players can adjust the main settings in the game, as well as listen to the music and sound effects heard in it. Some songs must be unlocked by collecting CDs in the game's modes or by doing certain tasks.
For a list of the game's music, check: Super Smash Bros. Riot/My Music
Other options include:
- Screen Adjuster
- Graphic Adjuster
- Sound
- Controls
- Erase Data
Online Play[]
Online Play is very similar to Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Super Smash Bros. for 3DS / Wii U's online functions, especially the later one. It returns two modes of play, along with a new one:
- For Fun: Here players can battle on any of the stages except Final Destination with any rules, the stages being picked at random.
- For Glory: Here players can only play on the "Final Destination" versions of stages, without items. One-on-one matches are possible in this mode, and both victories and losses are recorded.
- For All: A new online mode that plays similarly to Tournament, but with a few changes. Here players team up with others in order to rank up to win the tournament against other teams around the world.
- Smash Up!: This mode allows players to play Smash Up! online. Plays the same as locally, but the rewards system works different for each player, depending on how many points they've collected and on who wins the game.
