Like most other games in the series, Super Smash Bros. Nebula are non-traditional fighting games where players use different attacks to weaken their opponents and knock them out of the stage. The games are crossover titles that feature characters, places, items and music from different games and incorporate them in to one game. Most of the franchises included in the game are Nintendo and SeventhHeaven, although Bandai Namco, Sega and EA characters have been included. Some of these franchises are; Super Mario, Animal Crossing, Electroworld, Pokemon, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Metroid, the Legend of Zelda and Kid Icarus. Other third party games have been added as well. Some of these franchises are; Project Diva, Sonic the Hedgehog, MySims, Bayonetta and Mirror's Edge.
The game was announced on the 18th of August 2015 as a launch title for the 7Si as one of the SeventhHeaven TECHNOLOGIC announcements. The Nintendo Switch version was announced on the 20th August 2015. Both games were released on the 17th of May in Europe, on the day of the 7Si's initial release, while in Japan the 7Si version was released on the 20th of May 2017 while the Nintendo Switch version was released on the 23rd of May 2017. One month later, in North America and Singapore, the game was released on the 25th of June 2017. No Korean version of the game was ever made, although there were plans originally to have the game dubbed in Korean.
Both the Nintendo Switch version and the 7Si version recieved positive reviews, with critics praising the games execution and the graphics. Also, the amount of characters included in the game was praised, with critics specifically applauding the amount of characters put in the game, throughfan requests. Another feature that recieved a good review was the games music. The new theme of the game was orchestrated by Hisaishi Joe Hisaishi, a famous Japanese musician, famous for making the music for movies such as Delivery Service Kiki's Delivery Service and Away Spirited Away. As of June 2018, the game had sold 23 million copies on the 7Si and 12 million copies on the Nintendo Switch, with Europe being the strongest region for sales in the case of the 7Si and Japan being the strongest region for sales in the case of the Nintendo Switch.
Like in all previous games in the Super Smash Bros. series, Super Smash Bros. Nebula, is a multiplayer fighting game, in which the player must use various attacks, techniques and items to deal damage to their opponents; CPU or friends (online or on the same console). The aim, like in all Super Smash Bros games is to deal enough damage to get the competition off the stage. You can do this by increasing your opponents damage percentage. To help players, various items can appear on the stage. These items have various possibilities. Some of them can lower your own damage percentage, while others will defend you from projectiles. Furthermore, items can be used to damage your opponent. The strongest item in the game is the Smash Ball, which, if a character hits it enough, will cause them to transform or bear a super strong weapon. These weapons and transformations can deal a lot of damage to opponents and knock them off the stage.
A new feature in Super Smash Bros. Nebula, is the feature to create your own minigames, which can be posted online to a site where people can play the minigames which you have created. Some of these, may include a Pokemon battle, where the character can only deal damage to the other player by using Pokeballs. This is only one idea and it is possible to create several other games that have a higher level of creativity. Another new feature is a Smash Railway, which is an online feature, in the style of an underground railway system, where you must travel around the Smash Railway trying to get to a location, but on your way you can interupt, or, get interupted by battlers who are crossing the same route as you. This system changes everyday.
