Items are object, that either randomly appears on-stage during a match or is summoned by a character's special move, that can be picked up for use by characters. Items are a large part of the gameplay of the Super Smash Bros. series, but problems with randomness and inconsistent risk/reward balance results in tournament rulesets universally requiring that random spawning of items be disabled using the Item Switch before starting the match. Items can be grouped into several categories based on their effects:

  • Container items release other items once broken open, which can be done either by attacking them or by picking up and throwing them.
  • Recovery items decrease the damage of the user.
  • Status items apply some sort of effect to the user, often beneficial but not necessarily.
  • Battering items items are wielded by characters once picked up, turning a few of their attacks into an item swipe.
  • Shooting items fire projectiles when used, typically replacing the neutral attack and neutral aerial of the user. They all have limited ammunition and will merely shoot blanks once it runs out.
  • Throwing items can only be thrown at opponents. Holding a throwing item means that a character cannot use most of their attacks, as pressing the attack button will simply throw the item.
  • Summoning items release an ally that fights along side you or your team when picked up.
  • Collectible items do not affect the match but instead are added to the player's collection once picked up.
  • Special items do not fit into the above categories.

Container Items

Barrel

SSB Super Smash Bros. Series

Barrels are items that originate from the Super Smash Bros. series. When one picks up a barrel, one will not be able to jump, attack, and one will move very slowly while holding it (with the exception of Donkey Kong), due to its massive weight. Barrels can be thrown forward, up, or down after being picked up. If a standing barrel is hit with a weak attack or lands on a sloped surface, it will roll across the stage.

Capsule

SSB Super Smash Bros. Series

Caspules are items that originate from the Super Smash Bros. series. This item is relatively small and when thrown it releases a different item. If thrown at an opponent, it can also KO them if they are sufficiently weakened. They have a 12.5% chance of exploding instead of releasing an item.

Crate

SSB Super Smash Bros. Series

Crates are items that originate from the Super Smash Bros. series. These containers can hold various different items. When a character picks up a Crate, because they are so heavy, the character will not be able to jump or attack, and they will move very slowly while holding it. After the player has picked up a Crate, they can throw it up, forward, backward, or down.

Rolling Crate

SSB Super Smash Bros. Series

Rolling Crates are items that originate from the Super Smash Bros. series. They look exactly like Crates, but these Crates are identified by their tiny, black wheels on the bottom. If a player hits this Crate without destroying it, it will start sliding in the direction it was hit. Characters hit by the Rolling Crate will take damage and lots of knockback depending on the speed of the Crate. Characters can also ride on top of the crates while they're rolling.

Poké Balls are items that originate from the Pokémon series. This item, if thrown, will release one of a number of Pokémon. Each Pokémon does a different thing, including attacking the thrower's opponents, changing the properties of the stage, and inducing status effects. Legendary Pokémon have a rare chance op spawning from a Poké Ball.

Master Ball

Master Balls are items that originate from the Pokémon series. It functions similarly to a Poké Ball, and releases a Pokémon when thrown, but unlike a Poké Ball, it usually releases mystical and legendary Pokémon. Legendary Pokémon can appear from both types of Poké Balls, but a Master Ball is far more likely to contain a legendary Pokémon.
