Stage 1: Bowser's Keep - Throne Room

This stage cannot be revisited until the campaign's completion.

Setting

Located in the far southeast corner of the map, Bowser's Throne Room is part of the massive complex of a castle that Bowser and the Koopa Troop call home. Though one may pass through the large open area during later excursions in the castle, they are infrequent and short, while this level is set almost entirely in the Throne Room.

Plot

Mario runs into the throne room, quickly assessing the situation. Bowser sits on the far end of the throne room, Peach tied up and placed at his side. He rises, growling menacingly at the unfazed plumber, and lunges forward.

One short fight, and Bowser is felled by the hero. But before Mario can claim his prize, some monster pounces from the shadows, snatching up Peach and fleeing into a portal with her. Bowser rushes after it, and Mario attempts to follow, but Fawful emerges from the portal as it closes, blocking Mario's path forward and leaving the plumber no choice but to fight the old foe.

With Fawful defeated for the time being, Mario discovers a clue as to Peach's whereabouts - a map of the world, with an area depicting a sprawling forest of coniferous trees circled with red ink. Fearing for the princess' safety, Mario sets off on yet another adventure, unaware that he's being watched from afar...

Stage 2: Dragon Shrine

Setting

The Dragon Shrine is a bit east of the center of the map, and is essentially a less-ancient-than-average-but-still-rather-old ruin. The wall carvings tell of forgotten stories about giant hands that dictated the actions of the trophies. The entire shrine is quite brightly lit, and it's wide-open spaces and peaceful silence makes people feel at ease while visiting.

Plot

In the center of the shrine, Nowi opens an eye. She quickly stands, almost certain that she felt a slight tremor in the earth - an earthquake, perhaps, but not a natural one. She decides that she ought to investigate, and makes her way towards the Shrine's exit. (Unfortunately, the peaceful atmosphere is disturbed by the Koopa Troop's intrusion as they look for their lost king. And no, they don't want to welcome him back, tend to his wounds, and return him to his throne...)

As Nowi reaches the inner sanctum of the Shrine and the place where the Hand's Idol is kept, she runs into the unconscious Bowser. She quickly wakes the beast king, and the two join forces rather quickly, despite their clashing personalities, as it seems the Koopa Troop is going rogue and working for somebody else now.

The two finally exit the Shrine. However, before they can continue, a much larger quake shakes the ground under their feet. The two choose to go back to Bowser's Keep to gather materials before setting off once more.

Characters

  • Nowi
  • Bowser

Goals

  • Investigate the odd tremor (Music)
  • Exit the Dragon Shrine (Music)

Stage 3: Fungus Path

Setting

A road leading from Bowser's Keep and headed to the north, towards the massive forest/jungle that takes up most of the northeastern section of the map. It gets it's name from the large mushrooms that stand alongside, and occasionally even make up sections of, the road. It's proximity to Bowser's Keep means that it's often used by the Koopa Troop, and thus they are the primary enemies in this location.

Plot

Mario has exited the grounds of Bowser's Keep, and is following Fungus Path to the north. Along the way, he is facing the Koopa Troop, which seems to be as hostile as ever towards Mario, but is operating in rather different ways compared to before...

Mario soon runs into a little guy in a spacesuit - Alph - as he is being assaulted by the Koopa Troop and some of the shadows from before. Mario rushes in to aid Alph, defeating the foes in their way. Alph, indebted to Mario, wants to aid him on his journey... but he has no means of holding his own against foes. As Mario is departing, however, he encounters a Red Pikmin. Upon realizing that the Pikmin obeys his commands, he and his newfound partner quickly hurry after Mario.

The two soon reach the end of Fungus Path, and find themselves close to the edge of a forest... though not the coniferous forest that Mario is looking for, but a forest formed from massive oaks. Seeing it as their best lead, they delve into the woods.

Characters

  • Mario
  • Alph

Goals

  • Head to the forest (Music)

Stage 4: Skyworld Outskirts

Setting

Palutena's citadel in the sky, and the home turf of Pit and the Centurion army. This area, which is located at the highest point in the atmosphere before oxygen becomes scarce and one enters space, is comprised of cloud platforms, floating islands, and ancient temples of Greek architecture. Unfortunately, thanks to a recent war between the undead Stalfos and the Centurions, Skyworld isn't exactly in top condition...

Plot

TBA

Characters

  • Pit
  • Palutena
  • Falco

Goals

  • Protect Skyworld from the Stalfos (Music)
  • Defeat the Stalfos horde (Music)
  • Rescue the kidnapped Palutena (Music)

Stage 5: Emerald Fields

Setting

The northwestern corner of the sprawling plains to the west of Fungus Path and to the south of Dragon Shrine. Similarly to all other areas of the overworld near Bowser's Keep, the Koopa Troop seems to be overstaying it's welcome a bit. It is otherwise featureless, save for the occasional small patch of trees.

Plot

TBA

Characters

  • Bowser
  • Nowi

Goals

  • Head to Bowser's Keep (Music)

Stage 6: Bowser's Wastes

Setting

Outside of Bowser's Keep is a small wasteland of volcanic ruin under his domain. It is one of the Koopa Troop's most patrolled areas, and this visit is no exception - the place is crawling with enemies for the player(s) to battle and overcome.

Plot

TBA

Characters

  • Bowser
  • Nowi

Goals

  • Head to Bowser's Keep (Music)
  • Defeat Petey Piranha (Music)

Stage 7: Shrine Gateway

This stage cannot be revisited until the campaign's completion.

Setting

This location is simply the small courtyard outside the Dragon Shrine, bathed in moonlight and abandoned by all save for birds. Bowser and Nowi passed through it in a prior cutscene. It is small, but serene and calming in unusual ways.

Plot

TBA

Characters

  • NiGHTS

Goals

  • Defeat the hordes of enemies (Music)
  • Defeat Walhart (Music)

Stage 9: Bowser's Keep - Entryway

Setting

The gate into Bowser's Keep, heavily guarded by elite Koopa forces. The area is known for it's dark, foreboding brickwork, it's pools of lava, and it's torchlight. Expect to see plenty of classic Mario traps while making your way through this level.

Plot

TBA

Characters

  • Robin
  • Bowser
  • Nowi

Goals

  • Make your way to Bowser's Throne Room (Music)

Stage 10: Fairy Woods

Setting

The outer ring of the sprawling forest where Princess Peach is assumed to be held captive in. It is lit up by sunlight filtering through the branches in a serene manner. Unfortunately, some slightly more unusual monsters - creatures that anyone who played Subspace Emissary would recognize - seem to be prowling the woods, so this trip won't be without a fight.

Plot

TBA

Characters

  • Mario
  • Alph

Goals

  • Search for Peach (Music)

Stage 11: Bowser's Keep - Dungeon, B2

Setting

The massive labyrinth of cells under the castle that Bowser once used for storing prisoners. However, now it shelters the slightly more random and seemingly more innocent within it's walls, as well as some rather... dangerous creatures. These creatures, when they escape, run amok in the maze of passages for eternity.

Plot

TBA

Characters

  • Ganondorf

Goals

  • Escape the Upper Dungeon (Music)

Stage 12: Bowser's Keep - Dungeon, B1

This stage cannot be revisited until the campaign's completion.

Setting

Essentially the same as the floor previously visited in terms of basic appearance, this floor is much less labyrinthine, and contains only a single cage. This cage is normally meant for Peach; however, this time it appears to contain Palutena.

Plot

TBA

Characters

  • Ganondorf

Goals

  • Defeat Metal Sonic (Music)

Stage 13: Bowser's Keep - Courtyard

This stage cannot be revisited until the campaign's completion.

Setting

The massive courtyard of Bowser's Keep, which retains the same barren landscape as the outskirts of the castle, is the main gathering point for the Koopa Troop whenever a meeting is about to go down. So, by simple process of elimination, it seems that whomever overthrew Bowser's troops has called a massive meeting. The courtyard is also conveniently located directly above the dungeon, just in case Bowser needs to quickly lock away some rebellious Goombas.

Plot

TBA

Characters

  • Bowser
  • Robin
  • Nowi
  • Ganondorf
  • Palutena

Goals

  • Defeat Bowser Jr. (Music)
  • Defeat Petey Piranha and Metal Sonic (Music)

The inner layers of the forest where Princess Peach has supposedly been taken. A huge tree can be seen farther into the forest.

Plot

TBA

Characters

  • Mario
  • Alph

Goals

  • Search for Peach (Music)

Stage 15: Outside the Mila Tree

Setting

The Mila Tree is a massive tree located in the deepest part of the forest. It's huge size makes it revered by those nearby, but none have ever been within the halls carved into the tree except for a certain few - most specifically royalty and heroes of legend.

Plot

TBA

Characters

  • Link
  • Klonoa

Goals

  • Explore the Mila Tree (Music)

Stage 16: Mila Tree - Roots

  • Descend to the lower world (Music)
