Super Smash Bros. Altercation is the latest entry in the Smash Bros. series. It has less of an emphasis on newcomers and instead focuses on revamping veterans' movesets. Veteran fighters will receive more inspired movesets set as their default moveset.

In this game, custom moves have been entirely revamped, allowing you to create completely new playstyles for veterans and newcomers. Old moves are still available for competitive play or personal preferences. In addition, a new kind of special attack has been added: Shield Specials.

Gameplay

Cosmetic Changes

  • KO blasts have changed to be more like Galeem's beams, even having its sound effects.

Technical Changes

  • A new kind of Special Attack has been added: Shield Specials. Press B while shielding to use them.
    • Inkling technically had a Shield Special in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, but it wasn't until Super Smash Bros. Altercation that all characters would have one.
  • In order to air dodge, you now have to double tap the Shield button. This is so that Shield Specials can be used in midair.
  • You can now manually be released from grabs by mashing out of it. Certain grabs will take longer or shorter to be released from.
  • Smash attacks can be charged and used in midair, though if used in midair they will have different animations and effects than on the ground.
  • Grabs and throws can also be used in midair, and are different from when they are used on ground.

IceClimbersHeadSSBU

Neutral B - Ice Shot: The controlled Ice Climber summons a small stalagmite of ice and hits it with a hammer so that it slides off along the ground, damaging whatever it hits. The CPU Ice Climber will mimic this unless it isn't with the player.

Up B - Condor: If the Ice Climbers are near each other, they will grab onto their Condor's talons as it flies up. However, if not the Ice Climbers are not together, only the one you control will grab onto the Condor. Additionally, there is less vertical recovery if only one Ice Climber uses this move.

Side B - Squall Hammer: The Ice Climbers spin forward with their hammers, dealing damage to enemies. If the Ice Climbers are not together, only the one you're playing as will use the move.

Down B - Blizzard: The controlled Ice Climber shoots out a stream of frigid air from the palm of its outstretched hand to damage opponents in front. This move is mimicked by the CPU Ice Climber if it is with the player-controlled one. This attack has an ice effect.

Shield B - Switch: You switch the Ice Climber you play as. Colored sparkles will appear around the Ice Climber you switch to. This move does have some lag, so it might be risky to use it.

FINAL SMASH: Iceberg

This means Charizard will have his Super Smash Bros. for Wii U/3DS moveset, rather than his Super Smash Bros. Brawl one. Squirtle and Ivysaur will have completely new moves developed for them, however.

Additionally, instead of Triple Finish being Pokemon Trainer's Final Smash, each Pokemon will have their own individual Final Smash.

Alternate Costumes
Blacephalon
Blacephalon2

Blacephalon
Bursting Beast
Blacephalonstock
Blacephalon is a new fighter that's meant to represent the Ultra Beasts. His gimmick is called Beast Boost, in which getting a KO will power his attacks. However, this effect disappears if Blacephalon itself gets knocked out. Additionally, there is a limit to how powered up Blacephalon can become.

Neutral B - Mind Blown: Blacephalon throws its head as an explosive bomb. This attack is powerful, but Blacephalon itself will be damaged when using the attack. The fireworks explosion will become bigger and more powerful the more KOs Blacephalon has.

Up B - Flame Charge: Blacephalon, covered in fire, launches itself upward. An explosion will be created in its original position, which can damage enemies. The player can also change in which Blacephalon launches.

Side B - Shadow Claw: Blacephalon dashes forward with a shadowy slash, sending opponents backward and dealing damage. This attack can be angled.

Down B - Will-O-Wisp: Blacephalon sends out a traveling, multi-hit ring of ghostly fire. Charging it longer will allow for it to travel faster, have more range, and deal more damage.

Shield B - Magic Coat: A reflect/counter move. Upon a successful counter, Blacephalon will screech at its opponent, temporarily stunning them if hit. Note that Blacephalon will only stun opponents when it counters, not when it reflects.

FINAL SMASH: Maximum Mind Blown

Alternate Costumes
Steve
Steveminecraftrender

Steve
Controversial Cubeman
SteveSSBU
Steve's moveset revolves around using blocks to modify the battlefield around him, such as placing blocks for protection or using them as a platform.

Neutral B - Block: Steve will place a block in front of him. Holding this move will allow you to position where the block goes. Blocks can be used for mobility or to absorb attacks. A maximum of 5 blocks can be used at a time, and going past the limit will destroy the oldest block.

The blocks placed are in a random order, but consist of Dirt, Wooden Planks, Cobblestone, and Obsidian. Some materials are more durable than others, and thus can absorb more hits.

Up B - Ender Pearl: Steve throws an Ender Pearl upward, teleporting to wherever it hits. This attack can be angled to also be used as a horizontal recovery.

Side B - Bow: A chargeable projectile attack. Steve will shoot an arrow forward with his bow, with distance being determined by how long the move is charged. Occasionally, Steve will be able to pull out an Enchanted Bow, which has fire arrows. This Enchanted Bow does extra damage and can even trigger a TNT block's explosion.

Down B - TNT: Steve places down a TNT block. Unlike the blocks in the Neutral Special, this block can only absorb one hit before being destroyed. Certain attacks will trigger its explosion (mainly fire-based attacks), while others will destroy the block without triggering its effect. The TNT block can be manually triggered by Steve by reusing Down B next to the block. When this happens, there'll be a brief moment before the TNT block explodes.

Reusing this move away from the current TNT block will make it disappear and be placed in a different spot instead.

Shield B - Lingering Potion: Steve throws a Lingering Potion of Harming. This move does damage on contact, and a damaging effect will linger where it was thrown. This attack, much like the Ender Pearl, can be angled. However, this potion is able to damage Steve himself.

FINAL SMASH: N/A

Waluigi
Waluigi altercation

Waluigi
Avaricious Athlete
SSBU Waluigi icon
Waluigi is a character that represents the Mario spinoff games.

Neutral B - Serve: Waluigi throws a tennis ball up into the air. Using this move again while the ball in this air will allow you to hit the ball forward as a projectile, if timed correctly. The ball will lose speed and damage the further it goes. There is a rare chance that instead of a tennis ball, Waluigi will use a Bob-omb instead, which deals extra damage and knockback.

Up B - Air Swim: Waluigi does a breaststroke to fly upward, dealing damage to enemies on contact. Mashing this move will allow him to perform more breaststrokes and increase his vertical distance.

Side B - Kart Drive: Waluigi speeds forward in a Standard Kart before quickly braking to a stop. Any enemies will be damaged and buried on contact. In midair, the Kart will instead spike opponents. However, the Kart can be destroyed, which will damage Waluigi.

Down B - Wall-Luigi: When holding this move down, Waluigi will create a path of thorny purple vines behind him. These vines are able to damage and knock back opponents that happen to come in contact, but disappear after a short time. There is a limited amount of vines you can create, and once that limit is surpassed, older vines will disappear to allow for newer ones to appear.

Shield B - Whirluigi: Waluigi spins in a cyclone, dealing damage on contact. While this move is in use, he can move sideways, and any projectiles that hit him will be reflected.

FINAL SMASH: N/A

Taunts

  • Down Taunt - Mustache Pull: Waluigi pulls on and stretches his mustache as it bounces back to its original position, emitting a wacky sound effect.
