Super Mario Sunshine DS is The Nintendo DS remake of The Nintendo Gamecube version. The game features new shine sprites to collect and features new features. The Game Was released for The Nintendo DS in 2007.

Storyline

Just like the original Nintendo Gamecube Version, The game starts off at The Toad Express, where Mario, Princess Peach, a few Toads, and Toadsworth are flying out to Isle Delfino for The vacation. Unlike the original, Luigi and Daisy come as well along with Waluigi and Wario., While watching The video advertisement showing its numerous attractions, Peach notices The Mario-shaped shadow figure jumping around in the background. Mario and Toadsworth don't notice this, as they dream about the food and having a good time.

They make The rough landing on Delfino Airstrip, as a large amount of strange, moving goop in the shape of Mario's head is blocking the runway and has formed a pit. Mario goes on The brief search for something to assist him and soon finds a unique water pump invented by Professor E. Gadd named F.L.U.D.D., the Flash Liquidizer Ultra Dousing Device. The machine scans Mario and identifies him as its customer. After user instruction, Mario uses F.L.U.D.D. to clean the goop and defeat a Polluted Piranha after which the runway returns to its normal condition, and a Shine Sprite appears, which Mario collects. After defeating another Polluted Piranha, the Grand Pianta Statue comes out of the ground with the mysterious character resembling Mario on top. Shadow Mario quickly then took Luigi, Waluigi, and Wario, and trapped them into these graffiti marks shaped like L for Luigi, Γ for Waluigi, and W for Wario. Then, Shadow Mario attempts to kidnap Peach, but Mario foils The idea and Shadow Mario escapes into the Rainbow M he paints on the base of the statue. This allows Mario to access Bianco Hills and recover more Shine Sprites. Later, similar incidents of various landmarks disappearing in goop happen around Delfino Plaza, and cleaning the goop reveals that these places also have portals to different areas of Isle Delfino.

Once Mario recovers ten Shine Sprites, Shadow Mario kidnaps Peach again and flees to Pinna Park. Mario chases Shadow Mario there and takes down his weapon, Mecha-Bowser. Shadow Mario comes out of Mecha-Bowser's head and reveals himself to be Bowser Jr., Bowser's son. He says that Bowser told him Peach is his mother who got kidnapped by a bad guy named Mario. He also reveals the graffiti to be the work of his magic brush, which he claims was given to him by "a strange old man in a white coat". Bowser Jr. then takes Peach to Corona Mountain by flying in Mecha-Bowser's head. Unable to rescue Peach, Mario returns to cleaning up and recovering Shine Sprites. He also finds Yoshi and new Nozzles for F.L.U.D.D. to use, and unlocks more areas of Isle Delfino to explore. In Episode 7 of these areas, Mario must chase down Shadow Mario to a Shine Sprite from him. When these episodes are cleared, Delfino Plaza is suddenly flooded after a surge of water came gushing out of the cave behind the Shine Gate. This flood also wound up destroying the barrier obstructing the cave entrance, allowing Mario access into Corona Mountain. Working his way to the top of the volcano, Mario finds Bowser and Bowser Jr. relaxing in a huge hot tub of sludge with Peach with them. Mario then battles Bowser and Bowser Jr. by using Rocket Nozzle and then Ground Pounding from high up onto the five platforms protruding from the tub while avoiding Bowser and Bowser Jr.'s attacks. The force of the Ground Pound on the last platform flips the tub end-over-end and everyone plummets down out of Corona Mountain, while a large Shine Sprite hidden in the pool flies out.

Mario, Luigi, Waluigi, Wario, Daisy and Peach fall from the sky onto The island just west of Delfino Plaza. However, their reunion is cut short when they see F.L.U.D.D. malfunctioning. After looking at Mario giving its last words, F.L.U.D.D shuts down. The Shine Sprite from the hot tub returns to the Shine Gate as the residents of Isle Delfino tearfully apologize to him what they did. Far away from the island, Bowser and Bowser Jr. watch the celebration from a raft. Junior says he knew all along that Peach wasn't really his mother, and wants to fight Mario again. Bowser praises Junior and says that they rest a while. Later on, as Mario and Peach enjoy a sunset at Sirena Beach, they notice the Toads carrying F.L.U.D.D. which is okay and states, "The vacation starts now!" Pictures of their vacation are shown during the credits, showing Mario and his friends enjoying the island and its wonders. After the credits, a picture of Il Piantissimo discovering the Magic Paintbrush in the sands of Gelato Beach is shown, along with "The End" displayed in the lower right hand corner. However, defeating Bowser after collecting all 170 of the Shine Sprites replaces this picture with a group picture of friendly characters in the game posing in Hotel Delfino, with the the phrase "Have The Relaxing Vacation!" at the bottom.

Cast

Playable Characters

Mario, is not alone now on the adventure. This time, he brought Luigi, Wario, Waluigi, and even a Pianta. Each character has their own unique skill set to them, like Mario is the most balanced, Luigi is good at jumping, Wario is the more muscle, Waluigi is the most speed, and Pianta, just like Mario, is balanced, although he is one star faster then Mario. Each character has three unique stats, Speed, Jump, and Strength. Speed is the rate at which a character can run, Jump is the height that a character can go, and Strength is the power of their F.L.U.D.Ds, and how much water is in to push enemies. Some of these can get helpful for when you play as that character.

NPC

Image Name Description
Toadsworth2 Toadsworth Toadsworth is the old Toad who also guards Princess Peach.
Toad Toad Toad is Peach's long-time assistant and is the name of a single character, and a entire Toad race, similar to Yoshi. His role is sometimes taken by Toadsworth instead. He often shows up at Mario's house and tells him that the Princess has been kidnapped. In Toad: Agent of the FBI, he gains a deeper voice and is revealed to be an agent of the Fungus Bureau of Investigation. He has a little sister called Toadette.
PeachMP8a Peach Princess Peach Toadstool is the kind hearted princess of Mushroom Kingdom, her love is Mario. She is also great friends with Princess Daisy and is known for her bad habit of getting kidnapped by Bowser. Peach was born in the Mushroom Kingdom and was born befriended by Yoshi as Baby Peach and spent time with Baby Mario. But when Mario was two his parents sent him and Luigi to the real world and Peach was saved by the Yoshi's. When Mario came back to the Mushroom Kingdom he met Peach again and they became in love.
NokiShell Noki The Noki are a race of yellow creatures with shells, first seen in Super Mario Sunshine. They, and Piantas, live in Isle Delfino. They mostly live at Noki Bay and Gelato Beach. Most of the Nokis rarely go to the rocky surface of the bay, instead inhabiting their city in the waterfall. The profile for Noki in Mario Superstar Baseball reveals that they evolved from shellfish. The player will notice that most of the Nokis at Pinna Park wear clam like shells instead of hermit shells. It is implied that Nokis are capable of surviving in underwater habitat.
IlPiantissimoMKHSolo II Piantissimo Piantissimo is very overconfident, and finds himself superior to others. According to various locals at Pianta Village, he is considered a rogue, a creep, and not related to the Piantas. This could show that due to his attitude, he is left alone and barely challenged, adding to his superior personality with no one to go against it.

Bosses

Image Name Description
PollutedPiranha Poolluted Piranha Plant Polluted Piranhas appear out of Goop Generators in several areas towards the beginning of the game. In order to defeat one, Mario must use F.L.U.D.D. to shoot water into its open mouth repeatedly (if Mario sprays one while its mouth is closed, it merely shrugs the attack off). Once defeated, Polluted Piranhas dissolve into Goop, after which their Goop Generator disappears; Mario cannot wash away a Goop Generator like he can with normal Goop without first defeating the Polluted Piranha inside. Aside from periodically spawning Swoopin' Stus, a Polluted Piranha does nothing to attack, and will actually retreat back into its Goop Generator if Mario does not spray it.
PeteyPiranhaPlant Petey Piranha Petey Piranha is a large Piranha Plant. In his debut, in Super Mario Sunshine, he tries to take over Bianco Hills, but Mario defeats him. He seems to come back to life several times. He is best friends with King Boo.
Gooperblooper01 Gooper Blooper Gooper Blooper is a giant, perhaps mutated Blooper. He has four tentacles and a cork in his mouth. He can jump very high, and use his tentacles to attack people.
582px-Sms wiggler Wiggler Wiggler appears in two missions in Gelato Beach: Mirror Madness! Tilt, Slam, Bam! and Wiggler Ahoy! Full Steam Ahead!. In the first mission where Wiggler appears, Mario has to correctly angle three mirrors, to hasten the hatching of the Sand Bird, by removing the Plungelos found on the mirrors. Once all three mirrors are correctly angled, Wiggler falls apart, revealing a Shine Sprite. In the second mission, Mario has to fight an enraged Wiggler. It moves very quickly and can damage Mario by running into him. Mario can stun it by spraying Dune Buds with water when Wiggler approaches them, flipping it on the other side, revealing a weak point which Mario should Ground Pound. After Wiggler has been hit three times, it turns into sand, revealing another Shine Sprite.
250px-Mecha-Bowser SMS Mecha Bowser Mecha-Bowser is a huge Bowser-shaped robot that made its first appearance in Super Mario Sunshine. It has since made several appearances in some form or another in other games, including another main series title and various spin-offs.
Monty Mole NSMBU Solo Monty Mole Monty Moles are uncommon enemies in the Mario series. They are mole-like enemies that hide in walls or in the ground, until Mario or Luigi comes near, after which they will pop out and chase them. They can be defeated by stomping on them. Their supposed leader is Major Burrows.
270px-SMS Phatamanta Phantamanta Phantamanta, or simply Manta, is a boss in Super Mario Sunshine, who appears in the first episode of Sirena Beach. It is the cause of the Hotel Delfino's disappearance. It is a pale pink silhouette of a manta ray, and its name is a pun on "phantom" and "manta". When Mario sprays it with water from F.L.U.D.D., it splits into smaller versions of itself. It possesses the uncanny ability to project itself over any surface of varying elevations instantaneously, much like a shadow.
300px-KingbooSunshine King Boo King Boo is the leader of the Boos on Isle Delfino and appears as a boss in Sirena Beach, the sixth world of Super Mario Sunshine. He was apparently made from Goop, as can be seen during his defeat. His game of origin notes that he dislikes spicy food[1], which serves as the key to defeating him.
Eely Mouth Eely Mouth Eely-Mouth is an eel only appearing in Super Mario Sunshine. It lives in the Nokis' ancestral home, a massive underwater chamber below Noki Bay, and its gingivitis was the cause of the widespread pollution in the area. In order to purify Noki Bay's water, Mario must clean Eely-Mouth's eight teeth, three of which are rotten and fall out after being sprayed with F.L.U.D.D.'s water. One of its teeth is revealed to be golden once it is cleaned off. Eely-Mouth has two separate pairs of eyes on either side of its mouth; one pair appears to be male, and the other female (though the character is referred to as a "he" by the Noki Elder).
SMarioSMS Shadow Mario Shadow Mario (also known as ?) is Bowser Jr.'s alternate form he can transform into when he has the Magic Paintbrush. As Shadow Mario, he usually causes chaos and gets Mario himself in trouble, usually causing a chase scene[1]. He first appears in Super Mario Sunshine.
Bowser Jr9 Bowser Jr. Bowser Koopa Junior, usually shortened to Bowser Jr., is one of the 28 Koopalings and is current heir to the Koopa throne. Bowser Jr. is Bowser's favorite son and clone. Bowser Jr. was originally tricked by his father into believing that Peach was his mom, and Mario was an evil kidnapper. In fact, Mario wasn't the kidnapper; he was trying to rescue Peach. However, after being beaten by Mario, Bowser Jr. confessed that he knew Peach wasn't his mother all along. Regardless, Bowser Jr. shares the same ambitions as his Dad, defeat Mario once and for all. Bowser Jr. has never been in a game without his father. Over the past few years, he has become more and more important in the Super Mario series.
150px-Bowsersunshine65 Bowser In Super Mario Sunshine, Bowser's son Bowser Jr. is introduced. Bowser convinces his son that Peach is his mother and that Mario has kidnapped her. Taking on the disguise of Shadow Mario, Bowser Jr. covers Isle Delfino with Graffiti and frames Mario to put him in prison and return Peach to Bowser.

After Bowser Jr. flees from Pinna Park, Bowser, his son, and Peach (who is sitting on a massive rubber duck) are relaxing in a floating, sun-shaped, slime-filled tub just above the peak of Corona Mountain before Mario arrives. Shocked to see Bowser at a larger size for no reason. Angered by his intrusion during their "family vacation," Bowser attempts destroy him again. He attacks Mario by breathing massive gusts of flame over the section Mario is traversing and splashing the slime in the tub at him. Ground-pounding the five sections of the tub using F.L.U.D.D.'s Rocket Nozzle causes the entire tub to flip over, dumping everyone down to the world below.

During the ending, it is shown that Bowser and Bowser Jr. landed on the flipped tub, which is in the ocean near Isle Delfino. While out at sea, Bowser is about to confess to his son that he had used him as a pawn, but Bowser Jr. then reveals to his father that he knew all along that Peach is not his mother, but also that he is eager to challenge Mario again sometime in the future. Filled with pride for his son, Bowser decides that they rest for a while.

This is not the first game where Bowser is given voice acting. However, along with many other characters, it is the first game to give Bowser voice acting with distinguishable words.

Secret Levels

File:FLUDD!.png

Shadow Mario stealing F.L.U.D.D.

Every area in the game has one or two secret levels. These are never part of the regular area and are usually inside an alcove (barred off after defeating the level). These secret levels start with a short cutscene of Mario falling through a white area and Shadow Mario stealing F.L.U.D.D, thus leaving Mario only to rely on his acrobatic skills. These levels can also be revisited, but F.L.U.D.D will be accessible to aid in movement. When revisiting, there is also a red button that, when ground-pounded, makes eight Red Coins appear throughout the level and sets off a timer. The red coins must be collected before the timer runs out or Mario loses a life and has to restart the level. Collecting them results in one of the two hidden Shine Sprites in that area appearing. Exclusively to this version, their's also P-Switch secret levels in these FLUDDless levels, that involve you to quickly step on platforms that were originally coins.

These levels feature a cover of the classic "Mario Bros." music (Super Mario Bros. for the NES) in a rhythmic, upbeat, a cappella style accompanied by snapping fingers. Secret levels are staged in an apparently infinite void in which Mario may fall and lose a life. Various platforms and obstacles are found in the level, including the following:

  • Red and blue platforms that flip constantly. Mario alternates between red and blue platforms because all the red platforms flip at the same time, followed by all the blue ones.
  • Long, square-faced wooden blocks with colored knobs that rotate, so Mario must run along them at an angle while avoiding the pegs or risk falling off. This level was slightly modified and reused in Super Mario Galaxy 2, in the Twisty Trials Galaxy (located in World S).
  • Cubes made of glass with white edges that have colored corners that frequently sit at the edge of a platform (or shortly off it). These will carry Mario on the top and move to otherwise-unreachable platforms as they rotate and turn. Mario must walk to the flat edge to keep from falling.
  • Blocks made of sand that crumble as Mario steps on them (but regenerate shortly). These are often arranged into a long path or a sand castle that has to be navigated through that is continually breaking apart.
  • Blocks that disappear and reappear at regular intervals, regardless if Mario steps on one of them.
  • Moving Yoshi Egg patterned blocks in different colors that move in a set path and must be jumped across in order. They move through two archways, one of which stops Mario if he tries to pass through it.
  • Orange blocks with no special characteristic other than moving in every direction. They are arranged in large groups.
  • Some platforms have nails sticking out of them. If Mario Ground Pounds on them three times they will be completely in the ground and he can get a few coins, a 1-Up Mushroom, or nothing. They are usually on large, stationary platforms.

The Shell, Noki Bay's secret level.

When losing a life on the secret levels, Mario will restart at the starting point of the level as opposed to returning to Delfino Plaza. If the player runs out of lives, however, he returns to the plaza.

There is also a second, rare type of secret levels, included below. In these secret levels, Mario always has access to F.L.U.D.D. These levels always take place in the sky and have a different background music. One appears in Episode 4 of Gelato Beach, one in Episode 3 of Noki Bay. Secret levels of this type are also available in Delfino Plaza.
