Super Mario Sunshine Comet is the remake of Super Mario Sunshine. It is being made for the Nintendo Comet by Comet Gaming, Inc. Its main features will be adding high-definition graphics, the removal of the blue coins and replacement with 24 more shines, cooperative multiplayer modes, and more character-specific missions as in Super Mario 64 DS.

Story

Mario, Luigi, Toadsworth, and Peach are vacationing on Isle Delfino. When they arrive on the island, they find that it's covered in goop. They explore the landing strip and Mario finds a device called F.L.U.D.D. that he uses to douse the landing strip. However, he is momentarily arrested by the Pianta Police, who claim he polluted the island and show him evidence. Mario realizes this is by a mysterious foe masquerading as him - Shadow Mario. Regardless, he is ordered to clean the island up. Luigi and Peach volunteer to assist him, and Toadsworth decides to go out of retirement to do a bit as well.

When they arrive on the main plaza of the island, F.L.U.D.D. tells Mario that the Shine Sprites have been stolen, robbing Isle Delfino of its light. They begin a quest to retrieve them and clean the island up, as well. Suddenly, Shadow Mario appears and kidnaps Peach. Mario hoses him down and saves her. Shadow Mario then uses his paintbrush to paint a giant "M" on the grand Pianta statue in the middle of the plaza and jumps into it. Mario and co. follow him, thinking some Shine Sprites may be there.

After defeating Shadow Mario in each of the game's seven levels, the island mysteriously floods and they find out that Corona Mountain has been opened, so they head to it. After a long journey, they run into Bowser and shockingly discover that his son is the real Shadow Mario. A quick confrontation occurs in which the two are dispelled, being knocked out into oblivion on their massive hot tub. Mario, Luigi, Toadsworth, and Peach head back to Delfino Plaza, where the light has completely returned and the goop is cleaned. They are thanked.

Gameplay

The game will play similarly to Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario 3D World while staying true to its Super Mario Sunshine origins. Power-ups will return as in Galaxy, along with a mix of the moves used in each game, such as triple jump and long jump. Four-player multiplayer as in 3D World will be utilized once more. Levels will appear similarly, but will have some changes to accomodate uses of power-ups to complement F.L.U.D.D., which will have six nozzles that can be changed to at any time in the game without a nozzle box once unlocked.

Each character can be played as any time, and some of the episodes can be played as only certain characters, to retrieve hidden shines. Blue Coins have also been removed to make completing the game fully easier. They will be replaced with extra shines to keep the amount of total shins at 120, just like in the original game.

Levels

Bianco Hills

Bianco Hills Top
  • The Road to the Big Windmill: In this level, the player begins in the starting area of Bianco Hills. They must make their way down the first hill, cross the river, and find the passway to get on the other side of the big wall that is immediately to the right. Once they get there and walk all the way down to a big lake, Mario should see a pile of sludge. He needs to clean it up and defeat the Piranha Plant that's in the middle of the floor to collect the first shine. This is completely optional as F.L.U.D.D. can be used to keep going.
  • Down with Petey Piranha!: When returning to the area near the lake where the first shine was collected, there should be a giant patch of land that's emerged from the ground. Mario can climb up it and go all the way around the big windmill to reach the top, where a boss fight with none other than Petey Piranha will commence. After filling Petey up with water three times, he concedes defeat and gives a shine.
  • The Hillside Cave Secret: Mario needs to head back to the lake, but instead of going up the ramp to the windmill, he needs to head to the other side where he'll have to do some creative jumping with F.L.U.D.D. to ascend to the top of a platform and then enter a little gap on the side of the hill. He'll enter an obstacle course of sorts where F.L.U.D.D. is taken away from him and he needs to complete it without its help. After doing so, he gets a nice, shiny, shine sprite.
  • Red Coins of Windmill Village: Mario needs to head across the first river, but instead of going to the lake, he needs to go to the left village and try to find all the red coins that are around. Some are on houses, some are on the tightropes connecting the small windmills, and some are on trees. After getting all eight, Mario gets a shine.
  • Petey Piranha Strikes Back: Mario needs to head up to a mountainside area near the village where Petey Piranha lies in wait. After attacking him initially, Petey begins to fly all over the course and Mario needs to track him down. This can be quite hard if Petey isn't near a high ledge. After knocking him down three times, he gives a shine.
  • The Hillside Race: A man named Il Piantissimo arrives in the village and challenges Mario to a race to the very top of the windmill. If Mario wins the race, he gets a shine, but if he loses, he loses a life and has to do the level over.
  • The Secret of the Dirty Lake: The entire lake is polluted now, and if Mario swims in there for too long, he loses health and can die quickly. As a consequence, he must use leaf rafts that quickly decay after he steps on them, so he needs to jump from one to another quickly. After going all the way to the back side of the mountain, he enters a small hole and begins another tricky obstacle course where his ability to use F.L.U.D.D. is stripped.
  • Shadow Mario on the Loose: Shadow Mario appears in the middle of the village, and Mario must hose him down while running all about. It can take a while if the player does not use the proper technique.
  • Attack of the Sludge: Some goop has infested the entire village, and Mario needs to find ten Piantas that are trapped in it. After freeing all ten in two minutes, he gets a shine.
  • The Shine of the Secret Village: Mario needs to ascend the ledge on the left side of the river, near the grate, and then use the rocket nozzle to get to the very top. Mario finds three Piantas in tribal attire and says they are part of an ancient clan. They will reward Mario with a shine if they clean up all the goop in their tribe.
  • The Red Coins of the Lake: There is another set of eight red coins in the lake. Mario needs to find them. Some are on trees, some are in the water, and others are high up on the rigging above.
  • Flood on Bianco Hills: When heading back for the last non-hidden mission, Mario finds Bianco Hills filled with water going up to the roofs of the town. He needs to explore and finds that a drainage grate under the windmill is filled with goop, which Mario can't clean. Luckily, Yoshi can. His eggs are found on an exposed patch of grass and Mario needs to bring him fruit. The issue is that Yoshi can't swim, so Mario needs to use a leaf raft. After clearing the grate, the area drains and Mario gets a shine.
  • Red Coins of the Hillside Cave: Mario redoes the first secret, but with F.L.U.D.D. and eight red coins to find.
  • Red Coins of the Dirty Lake: Mario redoes the second secret, but with F.L.U.D.D. and eight red coins to find.
