Super Mario RPG: The Eight Shining Stars is an RPG that is in ways similar to all three Mario RPG games (Super Mario RPG, Paper Mario series, Mario & Luigi series). Like the three aforementioned games, there is a turn-based battle system. You can get Star Points (from Paper Mario) and level up. Each player has his or her own HP, Power, Defense and Star Point count. Everyone shares FP (in a fashion like that of Super Mario RPG) which isn't increased via level up. Like SMRPG, FP is increased by collecting certain items. For the Wii, both a Wii remote and the Classic Controller can be used.

Battle

In the overworld, when an enemy is encountered, a battle commences. By winning battles, Mario and co. receives coins and Star Points. When a teammate's required amount of Star Points is reached, he/she levels up. The amount of Star Points starts at 25, then once level 2 is reached, it goes up to 50. After that, it increases by 50 every time, stopping at 1500. When levels go up, their HP increases by 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 depending on their rank. When ranks go up (every 5 levels), the teammate's attack and defense power increase by 1, and the teammate learns a new move. Even after the final rank is achieved, attack and defense still can go up, but only after every 7 levels. In battles, you can use one of your abilities. Some cost Flower Points. Moves that cost FP generally are more powerful. If the total amount of FP runs out, moves that cost FP cannot be used. If HP runs out, then the party member passes out. Like SMRPG, there can only be three party members used at once. Unlike the game, however, you can switch during battle. The following are the commands:

Attack: Use one of the attacks a party member has learned.

Special: Use the power of one of the Shining Stars you've saved.

Items: Use an item

Other: Switch party members, or run away.

These are the controls:

3DS:

Circle Pad left or right: Select action

A: Confirm action

Wii (Remote):

D-pad left or right: Select action

2: Confirm action

Wii (Classic Controller):

Left stick left or right: Select action A: Confirm action

Stats

HP: Stands for Health Points. When the number hits zero, the party member will pass out. Increased by leveling up. Starts at 10.

FP: Stands for Flower Points. When the number hits zero, the party can't use moves that cost FP. Increased by gaining party members, and finding certain items. Starts at 5.

POW: Abbreviation for Power. The higher this number is, the more damage a party member will inflict. Increased by ranking up, and then every 7 levels. Starts at 1.

DEF: Abbreviation for Defense. The higher this number is, the less damage a party member will take. Increased by ranking up, and then every 7 levels. Starts at 0.

BP: Determines how many badges a party member can equip. Goes up by a predetermined number each rank-up. Starts at 3.

SP: Stands for Star Power. When the number hits zero, you can't use Star moves. Goes up by 1 each time a Shining Star is saved. Starts at 0.

Ranks

A rank increases every fifth level a party member reaches, stopping at LV. 20. Each time a party member ranks up, the following happens:

  • Power and defense increase by 1
  • The number of health added on level-ups decreases by 1 (i.e., at Mini rank, 5 HP is added for leveling up, and then at Super rank, only 4 is added.).
  • BP increases by a set number.
  • A new move is learned. Note that some characters can still learn new moves after reaching Golden rank.

The following is the list of ranks:

  • Mini: Acquired at Level 1. Power is 1, Defense is 0, and BP is 3.
  • Super: Acquired at Level 5. Power is 2, Defense is 1, and BP is 5.
  • Ultra: Acquired at Level 10. Power is 3, Defense is 2, and BP is 10.
  • Mega: Acquired at Level 15. Power is 4, Defense is 3, and BP is 15.
  • Golden: Acquired at Level 20. Power is 5, Defense is 4, and BP is 20.

Flower Points

FP is added each time a Flower, Flower Tab, Flower Box, or Flower Jar is found in the overworld. Flowers are added instantly. They add 1 FP. Flower Tabs do not go in effect instantly. They are found in the Items menu. They add 1 FP and fully heal FP. Flower Boxes add 3 and fully heal FP. Flower Jars fully heal FP and add 5 FP. Also, 3 FP is added each time the crew gains a party member.

Story

Prologue: The Attack

It's the day of the twelfth annual Mushroom Festival! Mario is sitting at home the day before when he receives an invite to the festival from Peach. The next day passes quickly and Mario heads off to enjoy the festivities. But about halfway to the castle, a thick fog fills the air and Bowser's airships appear! Mario rushes to the castle, only to find that Peach is gone. Mario starts to head off when a Blue Toad stops him. He warns him about the monsters that lie ahead. Mario continues, and the Toad says he'll teach Mario some things. A Goomba appears, and Mario learns about battling. Appearing next is a Grand Goomba. In that battle, Mario learns about First Strikes and action commands. Mario and the Toad finally reach Bowser's Castle, but they find there's a barricade around it. And then, out of nowhere, Bowser Jr. rams into Mario! A battle commences. Before the battle can start, Toad gives Mario the Stat Scanner. Mario finishes off Bowser Jr. easily using his action commands. Afterwards, Bowser Jr. explains how Bowser's Castle has a barricade around it that can only be destroyed by the Shining Stars, or turned off from the inside. With that, Bowser Jr. goes in, dropping the Scarlet Star. Mario picks it up, retrieving his first Shining Stars. Toad teaches him about Star Power, and then joins the team.

Chapter 1: Goomba Pounding for Shining Stars

Once the Shining Star is collected, Mario goes to Peach's castle to talk to Toadsworth. Toadsworth teaches Mario the location of the first Shining Star. He says its the Amber Star, found in Goomba Plains. Mario and Toad head off. The Goombas can't provide much of a challenge until the team fights Goomboss, the ruler of all Goombas. Goomboss provides somewhat of a challenge, but Mario and Toad finish him off to retrieve the Amber Star.

Chapter 2: Pokeys, Chain Chomps and the Gold Star

Mario returns to the castle after getting the second Shining Star. Toadsworth tells Mario that he's been studying and has found out the location of the next Shining Star - Pokey Ruins. Toadsworth tells Mario he has to go through the Chomphouse to get to Pokey Desert, in which lies Pokey Ruins. Before Mario can leave Toad Town, he is stopped by Luigi. Luigi explains to his big brother that he wants to join Mario on his quest. Luigi's wish to join the team is granted, and the trio sets off for Pokey Ruins. The Chomphouse proves to be a challenge, but the team manages to get to Pokey Ruins. After turning Pokey Ruins upside-down, they finally find Mummipokey. Mummipokey is a tough opponent, but he is defeated by the threesome. The Gold Star is their reward, and they embark on their journey back to Peach's Castle.

Chapter 3: A Day at the Beach

Blooper Bay is revealed by Toadsworth to be the next location of a Shining Star. He says that if Mario crosses Cheep-Cheep Bridge, he's bound to get to Blooper Bay in a flash. As the team ventures across the bridge, they are stopped by Bowser Jr.! Bowser Jr. forces a battle. He proves to be much stronger than last time, but he can't defeat the trio. After going around Blooper Bay asking clues as to where the Shining Star is, he finds Yoshi! Yoshi joins Mario's team. The team eventually finds that they must go underwater to a Sunken Ship. There, King Calamari holds the Jade Star. The team goes through the ship and defeats King Calamari, but right when the surface, Kamek swipes the star! The team chases Kamek down and defeats him, reclaiming the Jade Star. The team goes back to Peach's Castle for the scoop as to where the next star is...

Chapter 4: The Freaky Forest

Toadsworth discovers that the next Shining Star is located in the Haunted Mansion, right on the outskirts of Moonlight Forest. The team sets off to the forest. Although many challenges awaited the team inside Moonlight Forest, they reached the Haunted Mansion. Upon entering, the team is forced to chase after a shadowy Mario clone. The bros have to fight it. When he is defeated, the path to the ruler of the mansion is revealed. It is then discovered that Wario is the current ruler! The team is forced to fight the fiend. Wario puts up quite a fight, but is beaten by the team of four. Wario is forced to relinquish the Sapphire Star. The team heads back to the castle.

Chapter 5: An Ice-cold Battle

Mario and co. return to the castle to find a big surprise. Peach is at the castle! The princess tells her story, and then joins Mario on his quest. Toadsworth suddenly remembers that he forgot to inform Mario of the next Shining Star's location. He says that its at Freezie Castle, which is on the outskirts of Penguin City. The team sets off towards the castle. Along the path, Bowser Jr. challenges Mario's team to a third battle. Bowser Jr. proves even tougher than last time, but is vanquished. Upon finally reaching Freezie Castle, the door is frozen shut! By looking around in the snow-covered trees, Mario discovers a fire key. The key melts the ice on the door, granting access to Freezie Castle. Its a tough area, but the team overcomes it. When they reach the deepest part of the castle, they find the Crystal King. The Crystal King tries the best he can, but is defeated by Mario and co. He leaves behind the Turquoise Star. With two Shining Stars remaining, Mario heads back to the castle.

Chapter 6: Vast Clouds and the Seventh Star

Upon returning to the castle, Mario is informed by Toadsworth where the next Shining Star is. The revealed location is Cloud Kingdom, which was overrun by Lakithunder, one of Bowser's minions. The team sets out for Cloud Kingdom, but is stopped. Toadsworth says that the only way to get to Cloud Kingdom is Vine Valley, north of Toad Town. After climbing multiple vines and fighting enemies, Mario and co. finally reach Cloud Kingdom. Many citizens are in hiding because of Lakithunder taking over. Mario manages to sneak into Cloud Castle via a back entrance. The team reaches the top of Cloud Castle and fights Lakithunder. Even though he was the toughest opponent yet, Mario's team defeats Lakithunder and gains the Violet Star.

Chapter 7: Digging Deep for the Final Star

Mario returns to Peach's Castle, to find out that the final Shining Star is in Bob-omb Mines. However, only one citizen in all of Toad Town knows how to get to Bob-omb Mines, whose name is Captain Gray. But he is usually traveling the world. Mario ventures the whole Mushroom Kingdom to eventually find he came all the way back to Toad Town. The former military captain shows the Mario crew the entrance to Bob-omb Mines. The team has to go deeper and deeper as the battles get tougher and tougher before finally coming across King Bob-omb. The team of five manages to defeat King Bob-omb and retrieve the Diamond Star.

Chapter 8: The Epic Final Battle

Toadsworth tells Mario that now that the eight Shining Stars had been retrieved, the barricade around Bowser's Castle can be destroyed. Mario uses the power of the Shining Stars to destroy Bowser's barricade. The challenges are tough, but the team overcomes everything that came their way. Mario and co. finally were about to confront Bowser when Bowser Jr. did a sneak attack. The team was forced to battle him one more time. Mario battled and defeated Bowser Jr., giving his team the ability to defeat Bowser. In the final battle, the Mario crew not only had to battle Bowser, but Bowser Jr. as well. The team, although Bowser fought hard, defeated Bowser, and restored order and peace to the Mushroom Kingdom.
