Super Mario Land 3-U is the distant sequel to Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2. It follows the same location taking place in Sarasland, it has Mario and Luigi go and rescue Daisy from the Tatanga who has returned after almost 15 years absence. The game contains more worlds than the previous two games although has heavy references to the previous two games.


Gameplay

Returning to the old 2D sidescroller style of the old Mario Games, Super Mario Land 3-U focuses its controls on the core Wii-Remote controls (2,1,+,- and D-Pad). The player can jump and obtain powerups to help them throughout the game. The game takes place in Sarasland which was last seen in Super Mario Land 2: the Six Golden Coins. The player again is rescuing Princess Daisy from Tatanga, the purple alien villain from the first game and boss from the second.

Mario The plumber in Red and Blue, Mario is out to save Daisy for the safety of Sarasland from the evil alien Tatanga. Mario is able to swim faster and run faster than Luigi.
Luigi The plumber in Green and Blue, Luigi finally gets a chance to save his princess in distress from a villain. Luigi can Jump higher and further than Mario.

Power-Ups

While most Power-Ups in Super Mario Land 3-U are returning from previous Mario Games, the Ice Flower, Thunder Flower, Boomerang Flower, Mini-Mushroom and Penuin Suit all make their debuts in the Super Mario Land Series.

Power-Up Name Description/Effects
Super Mushroom A Magical Mushroom which allows Mario/Luigi to grow in size, it allows him to take damage from enemies without dying although he reverts back to Normal Mario/Luigi if he is hurt.
Fire Flower This Flower is imbued with the essence of Fire. In use Mario/Luigi is able to shoot Fireballs out of the palms of his hands, although he is limited to having 3 Fireballs on screen at a time.
Ice Flower This Flower is imbued with the essence of Ice. In use Mario/Luigi is able to shoot Iceballs out the palms of his hands which can freeze enemies and water making temporary platforms, it is limited to 2 Iceballs on screen at a time.
Thunder Flower This Flower is imbued with the essence of Electricity. In use Mario/Luigi is able to shoot Electroballs out of the palms of his hands which can paralyze an enemy or multiple enemies if in close range as well as electrocute enemies in water if it makes contact with water. It is limited to 1 Electroball on screen at a time and moves very slowly bouncing 8 times.
Boomerang Flower The Flower allows Mario/Luigi to use the power of a magical boomerang. Three Boomerangs can be thrown at any time and will fly out a certain distance before returning back to Mario/Luigi. The Boomerangs can be charged to be thrown further.
Mini-Mushroom The Mini Mushroom allows Mario/Luigi to shrink to a tiny size, they are able to jump significantly higher than before although they will lose a life if they are hit. Mini Mario/Luigi can be used to access mini-pipes and passageways.
Super Carrot The Super Carrot turns Mario/Luigi part Rabbit allowing him to hop consectively which can be used to cross small platforms, have a high jump and slow descent by the ears flapping. The player is also able to perform back-flips.
Penguin Suit The Penguin Suit also appears retaining its ability to give Mario/Luigi the ability to swim very effectively as well as Iceballs like before.

Story

Taking place a significant time after Super Mario Land 2: The Six Golden Coins, we find Tatanga has built a castle in the Icy norths of Natronox and while Mario, Luigi and Peach are visiting Daisy's castle they  witness Tatanga's Castle floating over Daisy's Castle activating a giant Vacuum device which sucks Daisy up (as well as some furniture) and after looking the distance Mario, Luigi and Peach see the Castle shoot mysterious orbs across the land making the landscape and flora of the regions of Sarasland change drastically. Mario and Luigi decide to chase down Tatanga and save Princess Daisy.
