Super Mario Land (also known as Super Mario Land 4) is a sidescrolling platformer game in the Super Mario Land series for the Nintendo 3DS. It is the fourth installment in the series and is more based around Super Mario Land events than in later sucessors.
The game will support the Nintendo Network feature, enabling online play via registered Friend Codes.
The game starts off with Princess Daisy giving a letter to Princess Peach. It reads:
Dear Princess Peach, please come visit my kingdom. I've prepared everything for my birthday party. I hope you can come as soon as possible!! --
~ Princess Daisy
Peach tells the Mario Bros. about Daisy's birthday party, and the three of them run to the Sunshine Airport to catch a plane to Sarasaland. [...] However, as the airplane is about to land, they look through the window, and see that Sarasaland is in terrible condition. It seems to be very dry and full of famine.
When their airplane finally lands, the Mario Bros. and the princess follow a road to Daisy's Castle. Apparently, Daisy isn't inside. Peach, confused, wonders where Daisy could be. Mario suspects about Daisy's missing and instantly remembers of Tatanga, his old rival ever since he had kidnapped Daisy in his very first adventure to Sarasaland. Mario, who is very determined to save Daisy, decides to leave Luigi and Peach in the castle and goes off on another adventure.
Super Mario Land 4 is very similar to previous traditional Mario platformer games. Several elements from Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins return as well.
Unlike usual Mario platformers, which have boss levels taking place in castles, the boss levels in Super Mario Land 4 take place in pyramids. After defeating an individual boss, the player will receive a gem. Each boss has an unique gem; after obtaining them all, the player can free Princess Daisy.
