Super Mario Galaxy 3 is an upcoming 3D action platformer game for the Wii U. It is a sequel to Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2 and the seventh original 3D mario title. It will be released sometime in the spring of 2014.

This third installment features most of the gameplay elements from its predecessors, nearly all items and objects are returning from the first two games, though new ones do appear.

One noteable change seen with Super Mario Galaxy 3 is the overarching story, which is something Shigeru Miyamoto had openly avoided in Super Mario Galaxy 2. Also, in the game's Co-op mode, Luigi can actually be controlled alongside Mario, along with two Co-Star Lumas instead of one.

Story

Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toadsworth, and many Toads stand in front of a brand new, rebuilt Peach’s Castle. As they celebrate, however, Luma flies down from the sky, gives Mario his hat back, and attempts to warn everybody of some danger when havoc breaks loose, Airships emerge from Wormholes and begin destroying Toad Town, and a large, swirling vortex appears over the castle, completely obliterating it and sucking everybody inside. Once inside the vortex, a rather large Bowser appears and raises his right hand, which is holding Rosalina, trapped in a bubble, and it is revealed that earlier, Bowser ordered his spaceship to destroy Rosalina’s Comet Observatory, and capture Rosalina. The reason for this being that she had trapped a powerful being known as Gala in the center of the Observatory many years before the events of Super Mario Galaxy, and Bowser believed that it could aid him in conquering the universe, which is the sole reason he stole the Observatory’s Power Stars in the first place, and has been searching for it ever since. After telling his story he captures Peach, Luigi, all of the others, and sends Mario hurtling back to the Castle, where he witnesses Lubba, flying the Starship Mario, emerge from one of the Airships’ now-closing Wormholes. Mario hops onto the ship, and they fly out into space to search for Power Stars and to put a stop to Bowser from completing his mission to free Gala.

In his adventure, Mario must collect as many Power Stars as he can, so the Starship Mario can proceed through the existing seven worlds that have been taken over by the Koopalings, and head to Bowser’s main fortress.

After going through the seven worlds, defeating the Koopalings, receiving the seven Grand Stars they stole, and fighting off enemies new and old (such as Petey Piranha and King Bob-omb), Mario enters the next area to find (to everyone’s surprise), Bowser Jr and Kamek, in their Airship. Kamek uses his magic to created seven galaxies, each a "dark" copy of one galaxy from every world. After completing each galaxy and defeating the boss there, Mario finally heads to Bowser Jr’s Airship to confront him. Kamek gives Bowser Jr his wand and a battle ensues. After Bowser Jr has been defeated, Mario takes the Grand Star embedded in the wand, and Lubba tells him that they have picked up huge energy readings emanating from the portal to the next world, so they head in. There, they find that Bowser has built an enormous fortress, and that Gala is almost completely freed from his prison. Bowser shows the gang that his new fortress isn't just any ordinary fortress by firing a beam of energy from the top which destroys an entire galaxy. Mario heads in to defeat the menace, and after a long trek through Bowser’s fortress, Mario finally confronts him, but Bowser wont let Mario get to Gala without a fight, so that’s exactly what they do. After defeating Bowser, he falls down to his throne room, where he finds a fully awakened Gala. Bowser is hypnotized and gives his Grand Star to Gala. Gala rises from the castle and uses his infinitely large gravitational field to pull almost every galaxy you’ve visited (including Bowser’s fortress) together into a giant “body”. Mario must run up Gala’s outer body to the top of the “head” and get inside where he must continue further to the center and confront Gala. Once Mario reaches Gala, all of the previously collected Power Stars come together to aid Mario in defeating Gala, this new Mario form is dubbed “Power Star Mario”. After re-doing these steps a few times, the Grand Star on Gala's chest (which was giving him power), shatters, and the entire structure implodes, creating a black hole that sucks in everything he used to create the “body”, including Bowser (who was rescued by the Starship Mario before the fortress was destroyed). Luma comes out of Mario's hat and waves his hand, closing the black hole. The characters captured at the beginning appear and are rescued.

(After this, Co-op mode with Luigi will be unlocked)

With all of the characters together, Luma says goodbye to Mario, then flies up and transforms himself into a brand new Comet Observatory, much to Rosalina's sadness. She thanks Mario for his bravery, and heads back to the new Comet Observatory, which flies away. Lubba tells Mario he and his friends should get back home, and they head off in the Starship Mario as the ending credits begin to roll. After the credits, World E will be revealed, and a bronze crown will be on your save file.

If the player collects the first 162 Power Stars and the Comet Medal from each galaxy, there will now be a silver crown on your save file, and a new feature is unlocked in which all the galaxies (excluding the Galaxies that Bowser Jr. and Kamek "created", and the Great Galaxy Incinerator) are visited by green Prankster Comets. From there, the player must hunt down all the Green Stars. Additionally, players can now have Rosalina’s head as the icon on the file in which the Power Stars were collected.

If the player successfully finds all of the Green Stars (adding up to 302 Power Stars), and deposits 9,999 Star Bits to Banktoad, Gala’s Daredevil Galaxy will be opened in World E and there will be a gold crown on your save file.

If the player succeeds with the one lone Star in Gala’s Daredevil Galaxy, and collects the Comet Medal for the galaxy, the star will fly up on the World Map, and then explode to unleash nine Hungry Lumas, one to each world (excluding World 9). If you feed one of these Hungry Lumas, they will transform into a brand new galaxy containing only one star (with the exception of the Mine Madness Galaxy, which has two).

Once you complete the Daredevil Comet in the Mine Madness Galaxy (finishing with a whopping 313 Power Stars), a new cutscene will play, where Rosalina returns and gives Mario a medal with a platinum crown on it, after this, the true credits will play, and there will now be a platinum crown on your save file.

On a side note, when the game is 100% complete, the save file will display a counter, representing how many times the player lost a life (just like in both predecessors), and the file will read ‘True Master of Galaxies’.

Gameplay

Main gameplay elements in Super Mario Galaxy 3 are returning from its predecessors, platforming is based on 3D planets of different sizes, shapes, and surfaces.

All power-ups return from Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, along with ones that are new to the Super Mario Galaxy series, but have appeared in other games, like the Propeller Mushroom (replaces the function of the Floaty Fluff from Super Mario Galaxy), the Penguin Suit, the Tanooki Suit, and the Ice Flower (from New Super Mario Bros. Wii), and ones that are brand new, such as the Ball Mushroom (replaces the Spring Mushroom from Super Mario Galaxy), the Vine Flower, and the Watergun Slurple.

Launch Stars and Sling Stars return, as well as Luma and Mario's spin action.

Elements new to Super Mario Galaxy 2, such as Starship Mario, the Grand World Map, and linear level mapping also make a comeback.

Wii U GamePad

The Wii U GamePad can be used during single-player. The player may use their finger to collect Star Bits, and tap Mario to use the spin move/spin move-related actions.

Multiplayer

The multiplayer in Super Mario Galaxy 3 can have up to four people playing at once. Player one will always be Mario, players two through three, on the other hand, may choose between 3 characters: Luigi, who controls the same as he did in Super Mario Galaxy 2, or one of two Co-Star Lumas. Mario and Luigi can work together to reach places that cannot be explored while playing alone, for example: One player hops on the other's head, the player on the bottom jumps, and then the player on top jumps in order to reach a high ledge containing hundreds of coins and Star Bits. Luigi also has a Luma under his hat, Luma Jr., who is green. The Co-Star Lumas are also controlled the same as the one Co-Star Luma from Super Mario Galaxy 2, being able to stun enemies, pick up Star Bits and coins, as well as firing Star Bits with the B button. Any player can use the Wii U GamePad.
