Super Mario Galaxy 3.5 is the third installment in the Super Mario Galaxy series and the eighth 3D Mario platformer overall released for the Wii XPlus, and was developed by Hyperspace Games and published by Nintendo.

The game includes returning gameplay features from Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2, such as planetoids and the way gravity works, as well as lifting elements from Super Mario 3D World, like the Cat Mario power-up. The goal of each galaxy is to travel across a set of planets, and reach a Power Star, though these may be held by bosses. Defeating Bowser Jr., Bowser, or one of the Koopalings in a castle galaxy at the end of each world rewards the player with a Grand Star, which unlocks a vortex to the next world. It is the largest Mario platformer in terms of content.

Gameplay

Super Mario Galaxy 3.5, being a direct sequel to both the first two games, retains the same gameplay elements. The controller of the Wii XPlus allows for motion sensors, so shaking the controller causes Mario to spin around via the use of Baby Luma, much like the motion control of the Wii Remote. Launch Stars, sling stars and Pull Stars all return, and are once again used to transport the player around a set galaxy. Star Bits and Coins are the main collectibles of every level, both of which can be kept in a safe owned by the Banktoad, meaning the player can keep 19998 of either (9999 at hand, 9999 in the safe). The unique boss battles and galaxy designs also once again make a return.

Plot

The game begins on the day of Mario's birthday. He and Luigi are heading to the castle to a party for Mario that Princess Peach has organised, with most of Mario's friends being there. However, after reaching Toad Town, an armada of nine airships and a UFO arrive and wreck havoc on the small town, shooting cannonballs, meteors and bullet bills everywhere, destroying most of the place. Bowser, on his modified personal airship, appears to Peach who is frantically observing the drama unfold from her balcony, and explains to her that his past plans were the result of him 'not thinking rationally', and she is invited to stay at his 'safe haven'. The Princess watches on in horror as the UFO cuts into the ground, allowing four additional airships to lift her castle out of the ground and up into space.

Bowser's own castle has also been taken off of the planet, though it is moving on its own via rocket jets, with other airships following the convoy with construction boxes and castle frames attached to them via chains. Mario is barely clinging on to the damaged bridge of the castle, and after a brief battle with Larry Koopa, he is sent flying off into space due to Bowser Jr. firing a Bullet Bill. Fortunately, Mario lands on Starship Mario as it bursts out of the clouds in pursuit of Bowser. After a brief chase, two Banzai Bills are sent rocketing towards the ship, and the burst straight through it, causing the smoldering remains to fall away.

Mario then wakes up on a large, fairly flat, green planetoid. Bunty, a red Star Bunny, greets him, and explains to him what had happened and that Lubba, along with a Yellow Luma and a Blue Luma, are the only known survivors of the crash are here with him. The bunny then asks Mario to go to Planet Plains Galaxy in order to gain a Power Star, which can be used for 'something he has planned'.

Galaxy Information Missions Boss(es)
Planet Plains Galaxy A lush green galaxy that is the first in the game. The round, central planet that appears on the galaxies icon is the prime location for at least two missions. It takes heavy inspiration from the now cancelled Super Mario Galaxy 2.5 hack project, which had a demo this galaxy is based on. This galaxy introduces basic enemies and features that will later become more prominent as the game progresses. Smg icon powerstar Up With Flapper Piranha

Yoshi Rise Galaxy This galaxy merges a Yoshi's Island theme with a Dinosaur-esque setting. This is the galaxy where Yoshi is first introduced in the game, though unlike last time, he isn't captured, but instead is hanging around with the other coloured Yoshi's, and is easily persuaded to join Mario in his quest. Several planets have locations from Yoshi's Island on them, and one of them includes one, true Dinosaur. Smg icon powerstar Team Up With Yoshi
