Super Mario Bros. 5 is a Mario episodic game with its first episode.

On March 29, 2016, NGamer revealed that the game will have three Episodes, each comprising eight worlds.

Super Mario Bros. 5 is set shortly after the events of Super Mario World and takes place before the events of Super Mario 64. After Mario manages to destroy Bowser's Castle, he decides it is time to take a much deserved break. After parting with his companions Luigi, the Mario Bros. set off to explore new territories.

However, unbeknownst to him, his nemesis, Bowser, has survived his last encounter, and has revisited, kidnapped Princess Peach, and sent some of his Koopa Troop in another attempt to defeat the Mario Bros.; Mario and Luigi must travel through a variety of zones to defeat Bowser once again.

Episode I

The first episode sees Mario and Luigi travelling through eight main worlds: Mushroom Kingdom, Jelly Bean Cavern, Cheese Desert, Sky High Clouds, Crystal Gorge, Butter Beach, Peppery Jungle, and Neo Bowser City, where he battles Bowser and the Koopalings of Super Mario World. Upon handling Bowser's Koopalings, Mario then squares off against the king. If the game is finished, a post-credits cutscene is shown, teasing the appearance of Reznors in the next episode.

Episode II

Episode II primarily focuses on Mario's rivalry with Reznors, following on from their last encounter during the events of Super Mario World. Bowser uses Reznors to keep Mario at bay while his plan gets put into motion.

The game intends to replicate the feel of 16-bit era Mario games with elements such as side-scrolling levels and enemies. Power-ups return in this game, including the Super Mushroom, Fire Flower, Cape Feather, and Starman.
