Super Mario Bros.: One Last Life is a title for the Nintendo Hypercube and one game being developed by Nintendo and GD Gaming Studios as part of a contract. It features Mario and his friends from the past "generation" attempting to stop Bowser after a mishap involving traveling to the past, 1-Up Mushrooms, and the death of Bowser Jr - it's certainly something never seen before in a Mario game.
The game is currently stated to only be available on the E-Shop for a certain period to celebrate the 35th anniversary of Mario, on July 19th 1981, so it will be released July 19th, 2016. It plays very similar to the New Super Mario Bros. series, but with some key differences.

Story
Bowser has come up with yet another plan to steal the Princess and defeat Mario. Having realized that Mario will never be defeated as long as he has an extra life, Bowser has his son and troops steal all the 1-Up Mushrooms in the kingdom. Mario, of course, is on the case, but he is defeated by a Bullet Bill nearby, and is not able to respawn; Mario has finally been defeated!
This, of course, causes a lot of commotion in the Kingdom: the Toads are panicking and the Princess is captured, as expected. However, with the goal of defeating Mario no longer important, Bowser's minions have abandoned him, and some have even betrayed him. Bowser dismisses it as nothing and makes his way alongside Jr. to go teach them a lesson.
However, before they can make it outside, some of the rogue enemies begin an assault on his castle. It proves to be quite powerful, and Bowser is just barely able to make it out unscathed. However, Bowser Jr. is caught between the rubble and flames of the damaged castle, barely alive. Bowser tries to pull him out, but Jr. is stuck and cannot move. Bowser promises that the rebels will pay and that Jr. would be fine, and heads off to figure out what to do - Bowser Jr. supposedly dies shortly after.
Bowser decides that in order to recover Bowser Jr., he will have to travel to the past and save Bowser Jr. from the event. He does so and manages to find Jr. - due to the whole "time travel" shenanigan, Bowser Jr. instantly remembers everything from the future once Bowser explains it to him. The two agree that they should take a break before heading back, and travel to the future to see what their kingdom could be like. Little do they know that there are some other passengers aboard the time traveling machine...
When the two villains arrive in the future, they gaze at the miraculous large castle looming above them; they're clearly impressed by the new Bowser's Castle. However, things quickly take a turn for the worse as a wall collapses with a large thud. Bowser tries to spy and see what's going on, and notices that his future self is actually being fought by Mario; even though he was supposed to be dead!
Bowser and Jr. quickly return to the present and gathers all of the enemies he can to warn them about what he has seen. They get to work on building the absolutely toughest trials and the most grand castle that they can, and others start a hunt to find out what happened. Nobody bothers to check the time travel machine, which ends up being a mistake as Mario, Luigi, Peach, Toad, and Yoshi from the past have all been carried into the present accidentally and end up having to defeat the current forces of the Koopa King.
Gameplay
One Last Life combines some common elements of the classic and modern Mario games, while getting rid of others for newer ideas. In terms of platforming gameplay, the controls are mostly similar to the New Super Mario Bros. series, with players being able to perform basic functions such as running, jumping, ducking, wall kicking, and ground pounding, though some previously 3D-only moves such as backflips have been added in.
One of the big changes in this game is, quite obviously, the life system. Since there is no 1-Up Mushrooms in sight, players must make sure not to lose their one life or it'll be an automatic game over. To counter this, players have access to 4 different characters to control rather than just Mario, and one can be switched out to play as another at any point of time. Each character has their own health bar and unique advantages and disadvantages. The team of 4 is Mario, Luigi, Toad, and Yoshi. Because there is no way to gain lives, getting 100 Coins will refill the health of your characters rather than granting you another life.
Princess Peach is also a large center of the game, as she is a partner that is always traveling with the player. Princess Peach holds a special power known as Toadstool's Blessing. Peach's Toadstool's Blessing is a magic power that has many uses, and it is vital for keeping the characters alive and able to continue on their journey. When fighting enemies, one must be careful not to let Peach get hurt, as she has her own health meter (albeit much larger than the other characters).
Toadstool's Blessing has two basic functions. For one, it can heal characters, undo any negative effects placed onto them, and increase their stats. Peach has a meter that displays how much of this power she can use on characters, and it only resets when entering a level or passing a special Gold Checkpoint. Toadstool's Blessing also has a second use that differs in every level, but often times ends up being something that is required to continue on. For example, in a level with Flipswitch platforms, Toadstool's Blessing may flip the platforms that are facing up, while in a level that has very little platforms for crossing, it might enable zero-gravity swimming. This type of Toadstool's Blessing is usable as many times as needed.
Power-ups also make an appearance in the game, but work slightly differently. They are a lot less common, and up to 3 of them can be equipped on characters at once through an inventory, allowing for players to switch between different power ups when necessary. They are also a lot more integrated into the levels than before, and sometimes are needed to progress through a level.
Characters
Playable
Character | Special Ability | Advantages / Disadvantages | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
Mario |
Mario is the master of the Spin Jump. The Spin Jump is an advanced jumping technique that lets you repeatedly stomp on certain enemies and is a more powerful attack then a regular stomp. It does not, however, reach as high or travel as far as a normal jump. |
| ||
Luigi |
Luigi is the master of the Scuttle Jump. Holding the jump button allows for Luigi to hover in the air for a short time before slowly descending, which is great for crossing gaps. With the Scuttle Jump, Luigi can also walk on water. |
| ||
Toad |
Toad is the master of the Pluck. Some enemies that act as platforms for other characters can be picked up with ease by Toad. After picking an enemy up, Toad can then throw these enemies as ammunition against other bad guys or carry them as a shield from above attacks. |
| ||
Yoshi |
Yoshi is the master of the Flutter Jump. Holding the jump button will have Yoshi muster up the strength to fly a little higher, allowing him to reach higher up platforms. Yoshi will, however, quickly lose his momentum when performing a Flutter Jump. |
| ||
Peach |
Peach is the master of the Toadstool's Blessings. Peach can use three different kind of blessings: a blessing that heals her and anyone near her, a blessing that activates an event in a level, and a blessing that lets her teleport to any other players nearby. |
