Super Mario Baseball , also known as Mario Baseball 64 in Japan (Mario Bēsubōru Rokujūyon), is a sports game for the Nintendo 64 and is the first of three titles in the Mario Baseball series. The game includes special elements with the basic baseball ones, such as Power Shots, Minigames and other special stuff that characters can perform in the fields. There's Chemistry that indicates good, neutral or bad relationship between characters, as well as various modes such as Challenge Mode and the Toy Field.

The game was developed by Namco and published by Nintendo. It was released in Japan and North America in July 28, 2001, in Europe in June 3, 2001 and Australia in August 10, 2001.

Gameplay

Super Mario Baseball plays similarly to actual baseball; teams take turn batting to run on the bases and fielding. The team who bats hits the ball to the field while the fielders attempt to make the batters out. Once a runner touches the home base, their team earns a point. There are three outs on an inning for the batting team. Once a team gets three outs, they switch sides. Whichever team obtains the most points wins. Teams, led by specific team captains, can have up to nine members.

Modes

Exhibition

1 to 2 Players.

A standard one or two player game mode of baseball. Players can choose their own rosters and play a baseball match. After that, the player can choose one of six unique stadiums to play in. Then, a number of match options can be adjusted, such as the number of innings, which player bats first and turn Star Skills on or off. Field settings, running, drop spots and batting cursors can also be adjusted.

Star Skill

A feature in this game is the ability to use a Star Skill, which is later implemented in successor installments as well. They can be activated either while batting or while pitching. Every character is able to use Star Skills, but Team Captain's and Sub-captain's Star Skills are superior to team players'. Captains have mostly different and unique Star Skills, however, Captains that usually pair with each other (Mario and Luigi for example) have similar Star Skills. In order to be able to activate a Star Skill, players need to fill the 5 Team Stars in the meter. Starting amount of Team Stars usually vary depending on the chemistry the team player has with the team captain.

Every stadium has a ball park feature that can increase the Star Skills when hit, with the exception of Mario Stadium. Star Skills can also be replenished when a batter reaches a base safely when the words "Star Chance!" appear. Team captains and players use up one Team Star, while Captains as members use up two Team Stars.

Challenge Mode

1 Player.

Challenge Mode is a single player mode (and the main mode of the game) where the player selects one of five team Captains (Mario, Peach, Yoshi, Wario and Donkey Kong) and plays with their pre-made team. This game mode is very similar in appearance to the Mini-Game Island from Mario Party, except players don't use lives. There are various maps (one of them being the starting map), with the player following a path of Spaces, each leading to a different location. Usually, a map consists of two optional spaces the player can visit anytime, which are the Shop Spaces and the Minigame Spaces (last map lacks a Minigame Space). Mission Spaces are obligatory and must be cleared in order to reach the final space that leads to the map's team stadium. The number of Mission Spaces vary depending on the map. In these Mission Spaces, the player will play very short baseball games, in which they must do a certain task in order to clear them. If cleared, the player gains Coins. If these tasks are not done correctly, however, it will lead to a Failure and the player will lose Coins. When a Mission Space is not available, it's grey-colored. When it's available, it turns red and then blue if it's cleared. Sometimes, Koopa Kid will take over a Mission Space, and coming in contact with him will lead the player to a mission against him. Winning or losing against Koopa Kid doubles the number of Coins won or lost, respectively. The starting map is the map belonging to the player's team, which only has a Minigame Space, a Shop Space and a Warp Pipe that leads to the first main map.

After reaching the final space, the player can challenge the map's local team. Upon winning a baseball game against them, that team's members will join you, increasing your team's variety. There's five maps (six if counting the starting map). The final map, which is Bowser's Badlands, is the most difficult one and where you challenge Bowser. After defeating him, Challenge Mode is cleared.

There are four difficulties in Challenge Mode: Mushroom, Flower, Star and Special. Once Special is cleared, Bowser Mode is unlocked. While playing Bowser Mode, Bowser must challenge and beat the other Captains and Sub-captains, and play against a team of nine of the ten Captains and Sub-captains, led by Mario (the excluded character is random). Bowser can recruit other characters (in dialogues with friendly characters, it's mostly him forcing them to join his team), excluding the Captains and Sub-captains. Additionally, Koopa Kid does not take over Mission Spaces in Bowser Mode.

Chemistry

Chemistry is a unique feature to Super Mario Baseball and its sequels. Player chemistry emphasizes the relationships between characters. When forming a team, the relationship status between the captain and their teammates affects the number of power stars the team starts with. Additionally, in the game, good chemistry occurs with two friends. When a player throws a ball to their "buddy", the ball travels faster than a normal throw would. Additionally, a player hits better when one of their friends are on base. Examples are Mario and Luigi, Yoshi and Birdo. Good chemistry is symbolized by a musical note.

Bad chemistry occurs conversely. When a character throws a ball to a character they dislike, the ball travels more slowly and is sometimes out of line. Bad chemistry is symbolized when a small zigzag line appears next to the players. Examples of bad chemistry include Mario and Bowser, Luigi and Waluigi. However, bad chemistry only occurs when the characters are fielding, and it does not happen all the time.

Items

Items are purchasable in Challenge Mode by using Coins. Coins are obtained for purchasing by clearing missions or by winning minigames at the stadium. There are two types of items: One-game Items and Permanent Items.

One-game Items

These items last for one game of baseball.

  • Nice Bat: Lets the player's character get hits more easily.
  • Power Bat: Increases the power of the character's swings.
  • Great Ball: Increases the speed of the character's pitches.
  • Super Glove: Increases the Fielding ability of the characters.
  • Koopa Sneakers: Makes the characters move faster.
  • Friendship Emblem: Increases friendship between the team. Normally incompatible characters will become more friendly to their rivals.
  • Superstar: Increases all stats and boosts friendship. Not available until every other item has been purchased at least once over the course of multiple Challenge Mode playthroughs.

Permanent Items

All of these items do not need to be purchased again. They cost 150 Coins and all of them have the same purpose: give a character the ability to use their special swings and pitches. Each one powers up one captain and become active when the compatible character is on the team.

Stadiums

Image Corresponding Minigame Description
MarStadiumMania
Mario Stadium
Bob-omb Derby An ordinary stadium that belongs to Mario (and possibly Luigi as well) located in the sunny hills of the Mushroom Kingdom. This stadium has no special features, being well suited for pure baseball.
SM64DS-Peach's Castle
Peach Castle
Wall Ball A ball park located in a beautiful garden outside Peach's Castle. Various ! Blocks float high above the field. The ball can hit those blocks and bounce to a different direction. When hitting specific ! Blocks, something different might happen. Yellow ! Blocks can give out Star Skills, Red ! Blocks can make the ball fly higher, Blue ! Blocks can make the ball fly to a random direction and Green ! Blocks can make the ball fall straight down. Additionally, Brick Blocks get destroyed when hit by the ball.
MHWiiYoshi's Island
Yoshi Island
Piranha Panic A ball park owned by Yoshi, located in Yoshi's Island. Piranha Plants grow widespread across the field, acting as hazards by attacking nearby players. Yellow Piranha Plants don't harm players and instead give Star Skills when hit.
WariocastleWW
Wario Mansion
Treasure Nab A ball park located inside of a luxurious golden mansion owned by Wario. Grindels crash down whenever the trap pannels are hit by the ball, blocking players' paths towards the ball and crushing anyone under them. A single star pannel is located in the far middle of the stadium, giving out a Star Skill if hit by the ball.
DKShip
DK Ship
Barrel Batter A stadium set on top of a big ship owned by Donkey Kong, traveling through troubled waters. A gargantuan Blooper is located outside of the ship, ocasionally tilting the ship with its tentacles. Whenever this happens, barrels will roll down the stadium every so often, hurting players. If the ball hits a Blooper tentacle, it inmediately flees and gives out a Star Skill.
Bateau-volant
Bowser Airship
(Unlockable)
Bullet Bummer A ball park located on top of an airship owned by Bowser. Various cannons are located at the extreme right and left fields, ocasionally shooting Bullet Bills at players. Sometimes, a cannon will shoot a Missile Bill, a dangerous Bullet Bill that will follow the character that has the ball. Additionally, Thwomps are located on top of the airship's background barriers, crashing down and blocking any would-be home run balls. Golden Bullet Bills appear on rare occasions, giving out Star Skills when hit.
  • The player must complete Challenge Mode once to unlock Bowser Airship.

Toy Field

Toy Field is a special mode where up to four players can participate in a special field. Players take turns hitting pitched balls into a field made up of many spaces. Players earn coins depending on where the ball has landed. 1B hit advances all runner lights one base forward, earning 10 coins plus 30 (10 from each opponent) for any RBI. 2B Hit advances the lights 2 spots forward, earning 20 coins and again 30 for all RBI. 3B Hit spaces are the same, except earning 30 coins for the base score.

? Spaces start a slot wheel. If the wheel shows three Bob-ombs, then the player loses 90 coins, 30 to each opponent, and if nobody catches the ball after it lands there a random player is selected to bat. Three red shells steal 30 coins from a random player. Three Blue Spiny shells steals 100 coins with the leader. Three lightning bolts switches coin totals with the leader. Three lucky 7's changes all spaces to HR Spaces for 1 turn and gives a bat again, those HR spaces give a home run whenever they're hit. Three 1-UP shrooms lights up all the runner lights and earns a bat-again.

Hitting the Coin Spaces causes many coins to appear on the field. The fielders can collect the coins for a few seconds. After that time is up, the batter gets any remaining coins. Hitting the panels right next to the back wall reveals a letter. Hitting all the letters will spell "Home Run", and the player will get a home run, earning them more coins. If the ball is not caught when a batter hits it, the batter will go again.

In Challenge Mode's overworld, the player can access to Toy Field after obtaining the Toy Key, got after beating every minigame in Challenge Mode. Additionally, Coins earned in this mode will be carried over to Challenge Mode. Toy Field's design changes drastically in successor games, getting a nighttime and more casino-like appearance, while in this game it bears resemblance to Peach's Birthday Cake from Mario Party with giant character figures and giant food around the field. It also looks like a big colorful castle inside rather than a casino / arcade-looking field.
