|Super Mario 3D Universe|
|Predecessor||Super Mario 3D World|
Super Mario 3D Universe (known as Sūpā Mario Surī Dī Uchū ? in Japan) is a platforming game set for release on the Nintendo NX at some point in 2017. It is a direct sequel to 2013's Super Mario 3D World which in turn is a sequel to 2011's Super Mario 3D Land, making it the seventeenth installment in the main Super Mario series (twenty-ninth if remakes, ports, and DLC are counted) along with being the third installment in the Super Mario 3D platforming series. The game was revealed on December 28th, 2015 and will be a launch title for the NX alongside several unannounced games.
The game includes many of the same features found in its predecessor while also innovating the Mario series once more. It also introduces several new power-ups along with introducing ones from 2D games into the 3D realm including the Cape Feather and the Frog Suit, similar to previous games in the series.
The game begins with a close-up of Bowser inside of the bottle he was trapped in at the end of Super Mario 3D World, appearing to have just woken from a sleep of some variety and length. The camera zooms out to reveal that the trapped Bowser is being escorted to an unknown location, where a shadowy figure then sets him free and then the two make a deal. Bowser, after hearing the deal, agrees and then sets off for the Mushroom Kingdom to begin his assumed rampage. The shadowy figure is then seen flying behind Bowser before flying above the Mushroom Kingdom and casting some sort of spell and then chuckles as it begins spreading its effects around the kingdom.
After this opening, the scene switches to Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad enjoying a picnic near the Tanooki Tree from Super Mario 3D Land when suddenly Bowser appears in his Koopa Clown Car.
