Super Mario 256 is a 3D platformer that was introduced on July 5, 2015, and already, people are hyped up about it. It's a sequel to Super Mario 64 and technically, Super Mario 64 DS. The developers are working on it, and hopefully, they'll release it everywhere soon.

Development

Super Mario 256 had a handful of beta elements. It was originally going to take place in Peach's "New" Castle, was originally going to have more characters, and originally was going to have about 174 stars. An original manuscript was made on green paper, that way, the president could distinguish it. Sadly, this original manuscript was lost. In June 2015, a new manuscript was made in a yellow composition book. It took away 20 stars and took away some characters. Original ideas for characters would be Daisy, Kooper from Paper Mario, Yvan from the Tabooki series, Toad, Gizmo, and even Sanjay and Craig. However, they deleted all these characters because the developers worried that it would be too many characters. Plus, they were just plain stupid. As quoted by president, ShinySnivyStudios,

I don't know why I included Sanjay and Craig. I...just don't.
ShinySnivyStudios, in an interview about the game

In the new manuscript, the game takes place at Mario's Castle in Mario Land in order to keep Peach's Castle's "old design", has 154 stars in order to not frustrate players too much, and has 7 characters. The game is set to release in August 12 in America, August 26 in Japan, September 9 in Europe, but Australia banned Omega Games and its systems for some reason, so its release date is yet to be announced.

Plot

One day, Mario wrote a letter to Peach, saying,

Dear Peach, I would like you to come to my-a castle in-a Mario Land. Let's spend some time-a together. Love, Mario
Mario in a letter, Super Mario 256

So, Peach went there, but Luigi, Wario, and a few unfamiliar faces came too! But, when they went inside the castle, it was dark and Mario wasn't there. Pretty soon, they disappeared, too. When the Lakitu Bros. (the cameramen) heard about this, they told Yoshi, who came to help.

Characters

There are 7 characters in the game, including 1 that can be unlocked after you get all 154 stars.

Courses

There are 15 main courses in this game with 8 stars each including a 100-coin star. The following guide will tell you how to obtain all 120 stars of these courses.

Course 1: Scenic Grasslands

What a view! This course offers a magnificent view of the course, but this is no time for viewing. We need to get more stars to rescue Mario!

King Bob-omb's Strike Back

Characters Required: Anyone Items Required: Wing Cap

Go up to the pillar on the right and climb up it. Grab the wing cap and fly to the ledge on the northwest part of the map. There, you can battle King Bob-omb and get your star!

Paratroopa's Race

Characters Required: Mario Items Required: None

Go up to Paratroopa and challenge him to a race. If you win, he'll give you a star. (FUN FACT: Paratroopa is Koopa the Quick's brother. He quit racing due to losing a lot despite cheating.)

5 Scenic Silver Stars

Characters Required: Anyone Items Required: Wing Cap

Collect 5 silver stars all over the level. You need to look hard.

8 Red Coins to Look Out For

Characters Required: Anyone Items Required: Wing Cap

There are 2 coins on the ground. Pick them up. The rest of the coins you need the wing cap for, so grab them, then fly away!

King Bob-omb Strikes Back Again

Characters Required: Yoshi Items Required: Wing Cap

Do what you did before in the first one. He's tougher than before, so watch out!

Goombario's Challenge

Characters Required: Mario Items Required: None

It's Goombario! Except instead of helping you, he gives you a challenge. It goes like this: You spin around on the spin panel until you get dizzy. Then, you must navigate a 2D platformer area using mixed-up controls. Fall off, and you lose. You have 15 seconds to complete it. If you do, you get a star!

Scenic Switch Star

Characters Required: Anyone Items Required: Metal Cap

Go to the pillar and climb it like earlier. Press the switch, get the metal cap, and go to a lake on the west side. Walk on the bottom and break the shield!

Course 2: Dusty Desert

Whew, this place is hot, hot, hot! Stop dying of thirst and get more stars!

Mummify King Pokankhamen

Characters Required: Yoshi Items Required: None

To the Top of the Pyramid

Characters Required: Anyone Items Required: Wing Cap (optional)

Go to the pyramid on the northwest corner. The blocks will push in and out to make platforms. Memorize the pattern, get up to the top and grab your star. Or...you can go to the ledge, grab a Wing Cap, and fly over there. (That is optional)

Don't Touch The Cactus

Characters Required: Anyone Items Required: None

Go up to the cactus in the southeast corner and touch it. Yep.

Remember Pokankhamen? He has his own tomb! Be warned, though: it's one of the glitchiest levels in the game. Wait, those glitches were made on purpose! It's not really a glitch if it was made on purpose, so let's call them "purpo-glitches".

Endings

There are 3 endings to this game. Each ending requires a certain number of stars or a certain character unlocked.

Bronze Ending (80-153 Stars) & Silver Ending (154 Stars)

In these two endings, Mario defeats Bowser and flies to the front of his castle. Mario uses the stars to save the castle. Out of nowhere, Peach appears, thanks everyone for saving her, and invites everyone to a big feast. When the player gets one of these endings, his/her file selection button will be bronze or silver (depending on which ending you get).

Gold Ending (??? Unlocked)

In this ending, Mario defeats Bowser Jr. and gets the key to the mystery person's room. The remaining cast is in the character selection room of the castle. Then, Mario arrives, carrying the key. He stands in front of the door, unlocks it with the key, and opens it. There is a very scary shadow that keeps getting closer to our heroes. Then, the true form is revealed: a boo named Bantam. He introduces himself, then her tells the heroes his story and why he got locked up:

BantamBoo

Concept art of Bantam.

Here is my story: I was once a guy, like everyone else...except that I was an actor who played for Bowser and his Koopalings. I was pretty good. But, as I was the best at acting...I died. Bowser was mildly disappointed...then he gave me this finite body...and turned me into one of his henchmen. I really didn't like that. What I didn't like more was that I was being picked on a lot...for my hair...and my abnormally long arms. The year was 1985. Your game came out...I was hooked, and pretty soon...I became your biggest fan. Your games got better...and better...and better. Bowser was busy. He had been locking you up...in these doors. When Bowser found out that I liked you...he wasn't happy. He locked me up with you...and you rescued me. I don't know where it all went wrong. I was especially scared...I thought I was a goner. I don't know what to do to thank you, I mean...I really wish I could join your team...
Bantam, Super Mario 256

Then, Mario accepts Bantam into his team, then Peach invites all the crew to fun. When the player gets one of this ending, his/her file selection button will be gold along with the word, "CLEAR".

Music

Almost all of the music in this game is borrowed from other Mario games because time was very limited and the developers didn't have time to make their own music, with the exception of the title screen and Zip Line Mountain, which has music based on Antonin Dvořák's symphony From the New World.
