Items return in Super Smash Bros. 5 with several new items making their grand appearance as well as older items returning. Items have had several revamps; in particular Item Togle and Item Customization. Item Toggle allows players to turn off items as a group or individually as well as decrease and increase in the time they appear. Players can toggle between how often a certain item to will appear in a match instead of items as a whole. This means players can choose to have Pokeballs appear more frequently than Assist Trophies. It is also possible to save presets and load them prior to a match. Item Customization is a new feature available. It allows players to customize items using items found within single-player modes and allows the items certain properties. Items can only be upgraded once at a time meaning they are unable to have multiple upgrades at the same time.

Types of Items

Items can be grouped into several categories based on their effects.

  • Container items release other items once broken open, which can be done either by attacking them or by picking up and throwing them. In general, container items have a 12.5% (1 in 8) chance of exploding instead of releasing items.
  • Battering items, such as the Home-Run Bat and the Beam Sword, can be wielded by players and used as melee weapons. They have their own unique move set when used. They can also be thrown to extend the items reach.
  • Shooting items, such as the Super Scope and Ray Gun, can fire projectiles at considerable distances. Each shooting item as a different property and fire out different sorts of projectiles. Shooting items have limited ammo and won't fire anymore when it reaches that limit.
  • Throwing items, such as Hothead or Gooey Bomb, can be used and thrown. They will cause an effect depending on the item.
  • Status items, such as Super-Spicy Curry or Franklin Badge, will instill a certain effect on the recipient that can positively (or negatively) effect the player. It will either wear off in time or can be knocked off by opponents.
  • Recovery items, such as the Heart Container or Maxim Tomato, will decrease the damage percentage with some items only healing a little while others will set it back to 0%.
  • Summoning items, such as the Assist Trophy and Pokeball, will release an ally that may help or hinder the player who summoned them.
  • Collectible items, such as Trophies and Stamps, do not affect the match outcome but will add a collectable item to the Vault.
  • Special items do not fit into the above categories.
