Stunfisk, known in Japan as マッギョ (Maggyo), is a weird-looking Ground/Electric-type Pokémon, which is unable to evolve to or from any other Pokémon. Stunfisk appears to be a fish, despite not being a Water-type Pokémon (and ironically, being weak to it).
Stunfisk is a flatfish-like Pokémon. Its body is mainly as brown as the seafloor's sand, and the edges to the other side of its body is rimmed with a thick line of taupe brown. Its tailfin is round and yellow, and on its body are some yellow markings found that resemble an exclamation mark. The underside of its body is mostly yellow, too. Stunfisk has two fins of the same color as its body near its face, which consists of two saucer-like eyes and beige lips placed exactly between the eyes, resembling a bird's beak.
Stunfisk usually covers itself in the mud of seashores, and then waits for prey to pass by. When they step on Stunfisk, it will deliver a jolt of electricity. Stunfisk may smile in the process, because that's what Stunfisk does when transmitting electricity. Stunfisk's skin is so hard that even being stepped on by sumo wrestlers won't hurt it. When it realized its opponents are unable to be paralyzed, it contorts itself with surprising speed and then flops away quickly
- As of Generation 6, Electric-type Pokémon like Stunfisk are immune to paralysis. Despite this, Stunfisk still has the ability Limber, which also prevents paralysis. This leaves Stunfisk's second ability redundant unless its type is altered with a certain move.
Stunfisk seems very likely to be a flounder or dab, crossed with an electric ray. It may also be based on the stargazer, a fish that spends most of the time buried on the seafloor and discharges electric currents when it's disturbed.
Stunfisk is a combination of stun and fisk. "Fisk" is a word that in most Northern European languages mean "fish" and is derived from Old English. It may also come from fish and disk instead, due to its flat shape.
Maggyo is combination of マッド maddo (mud) and 魚 gyo (fish), but it may also refer to まぐろ maguro (tuna).
