First Contract: Strafe is given a contract by the Thieves Guild to break into Sear's Mansion and steal his signet ring. During the mission, however, he witnesses his father conspiring with the noble to destroy the Thieves Guild and makes an escape to warn the Guild. This quest serves as a tutorial to the basic stealth and combat mechanics of the game with the separate infiltration and escape segments.
Home Improvement: To prepare for potential attacks from Sear, three of Strafe's fellow Thieves Guild members offer side quests which he must complete before advancing (the only point in the game where side quests are mandatory). They are: Work of Art, The Best Defense and Full House.
Work of Art: Xaler, the Thieves Guild's only mage and also the artist in charge of creating the Guild's "propaganda posters" asks Strafe to place 10 of the posters in various locations throughout the Thieves District. Upon placing his first, fifth and last (tenth) posters Strafe is ambushed by groups of Sear's soldiers who he defeats. This quest, or The Best Defense depending on which is attempted first, serves as a tutorial to the influence mechanic as each poster placed earns 1% influence in the Thieves District, and also to the Propaganda task which can be completed in all other districts.
The Best Defense: Zanzabar, a Kresthitan member of the Guild, asks Strafe's help in taking down five guard posts Sear's men have set up around the Thieves District. During the fights, Zanzabar provides sniper support from a distance. This quest, or Work of Art depending on which is attempted first, serves as a tutorial to the influence mechanic as each guard post cleared earns 2% influence in the Thieves District, and also to the Guard Post task which can be completed in all other districts.
Full House: Evelyn, one of the Guild's thieves, has noticed one of the architects the Thieves Guild hired for expansions to the Guild Hall has gone missing. Strafe finds a group of Sear's soldiers escorting the architect to the Central District where they intend to interrogate him to find weaknesses to exploit in attacking the Guild Hall. He must follow the soldiers, while avoiding detection, and ambush them once they reach a sufficiently secluded location.
