Unlike most Star Fox games, Star Fox Origins is an open-world game. You are on the Great Fox most of the time, as it serves as the main hub of the game. You recieve missions from random individuals who need Star Fox to do some work for them. Once you have finished a mission, you must contact the individual who gave you it to recieve your payment. There are several types of missions:
- Collection missions involve you heading down to a planet, or the space above a planet, and retrieving one or more objects.
- Combat missions involve destroying certain individuals in the air or on the ground.
You go through the game doing these missions. You can do whichever ones you want, but there are a few that you cannot decline. These missions are important to the storyline and, unlike the others, can be replayed at the Great Fox's Virtual Reality area.
To travel around, you use the Great Fox to go from planet to planet. Arwings may be used above and on the surface of these planets, and Landmasters can be used on the surface, along with travelling on foot, if the Great Fox has landed on the planet, along with Blue Marines on planets with water. Here is a list of which vehicles can be used on each planet in the game:
- Corneria: Arwings, Landmasters, Blue Marines, and on-foot travelling.
- Meteo: Arwings only.
- Fichina: Arwings, Landmasters, and on-foot travelling.
- Sector X: Arwings only.
- Titania: Arwings, Landmasters, and on-foot travelling.
- Katina: Arwings, Landmasters, and on-foot travelling.
- Solar: Arwings only.
- Macbeth: Arwings, Landmasters, and on-foot travelling.
- Sector Y: Arwings only.
- Aquas: Arwings above the water, and Blue Marines on and below the water.
- Zoness: Arwings and Blue Marines.
- Sector Z: Arwings only.
- Venom: Arwings, Landmasters, and on-foot travelling.
The main game can be played with up to 2 other players, who take control of Peppy and Pigma. There are a few parts of the game that can only be played with one player, however. After completing the main story, 4-player multiplayer is unlocked, and you play as Fox, Falco, Slippy, or Peppy, respectively. In addition, there is a battle mode where players play as either James, Peppy, Pigma, Wolf, Leon, Fox, Falco, or Slippy. The battle mode can be played online as well.
