Spike The Porcupine (or スパイク山嵐 in Japan) is an action platformer created by the Spike Squad. It is the first installment in the Spike The Porcupine series. It was made in partnership with Nintendo. The game takes place in the same universe as Sonic The Hedgehog, but on a different planet, known as Planet Delta. The gameplay focuses mostly on Spike, but there are certain levels where you can play as his friends.

Story[]

Spike and his friends are fighting invading Shadow Creatures in Wind Valley Zone, Spike's hometown, when suddenly a large portal opens. Everyone stops fighting for a second and stares at it. An unexpected giant gust of wind blows everybody over, and a laugh can be heard. Zero The Negative Porcupine jumps out of the portal and flashes an evil smile as he studies the destruction.

"Once I have all of the Chaos Diamonds, I will destroy this planet!" Zero exclaims.

The nefarious porcupine then exits back through the portal, summoning his Shadow Creatures with him. Still on the ground, Spike glares up at Zero as he leaves.

Spike and co. then have to venture through many levels to find the Chaos Diamonds before Zero.

Gameplay[]

The gameplay is very similar to the Sonic series, but with the addition of swords and other new elements. There are 3D segments mixed with 2D segments, also like Sonic. But, there is a new addition, known as "falling" segments. These new portions of levels add a greater variety to the control system. You must tilt and and use the homing attack to play at these parts.

Reception[]

The game got mostly positive reviews, praised for great visuals, tight controls, and a surprisingly good multiplayer mode. The surprising success of the game quickly demanded a sequel.

Compared to the Sonic series, there were mixed reviews. Many companies stated that it perfectly fit the Sonic series and was very fun to play. However, despite all the good reviews, some companies disliked it for certain reasons. One company said that Spike's controls were too similar to Sonic's from Sonic And The Black Knight. This is odd, considering the sword controls are actually much better than the previously mentioned title. They even feature Wii Motion Plus controls.

Sequel[]

On October 15, 2014, it was revealed that Spike The Porcupine would indeed receive a sequel. It was yet to receive a title.

On December 3, 2014, the name was revealed. Titled a simple "Spike The Porcupine 2", the game was much anticipated.

On January 27, 2015, a trailer was released, showing the gameplay, new elements, and new characters.

On March 2, 2015, a CGI trailer was released, showing Spike slicing enemies. Then, his friends join him, smashing and blasting enemies. This trailer did not reveal much.

On May 21, 2015, a short movie was released, titled "Spike's Journey". It featured Spike and Will venturing through Dragon City to Fire Mountain.

On June 17, 2015, a final trailer was revealed, showing tons of new elements, gameplay, and enemies.

On August 13, 2015, the long-awaited game was released.

Trivia[]

  • Oddly, Spike's artwork depicts him with a green Chaos Emerald, whereas in the games, he gets a green Chaos Diamond. This issue was later fixed.
  • The game originally had a character called "Psych The Hedgehog," but it was scrapped for unknown reasons.
    • Hacking the game will allow you to play as Psych, but his controls are incomplete and he is very glitchy.
