I step two, maybe three stories up the stairs into a large dining room. And then...
I see the lady of the house.
"Lady Bow", I stutter. She looks amazing, and don't even ask me why.
"Oh, hey Exal," she says to me. "You came for the date, right?"
I sit down in front of her at the table. I ask her about the Spectral Realm, and her family's origins there. She replies that her great-great-great-great-great-grandparents wanted to move from there to the Mushroom Kingdom, so they brought tons of willing Boos with them and made a civilization. I told her it was interesting,
We eat dinner, and I'm just about to step out the door when suddenly--
"Exal, could you, uh... stay for a while?"
Lady Bow is grabbing my hand, and rubbing hers on it. What do I do? I ask myself.
All I knew was that I was in for something.
As I lay on Bow's bed with her, I can't help but think about the time I met her. I was walking around in the woods and looking for trouble... and I found some. A small, pale ghost was being strangled by living vines. I didn't think; I just grabbed my sword and slashed them off of her. Our eyes met. "Uh, hi... I'm Exal," I told the ghost. She told me her name was Bow, which took my breath away. Most parents would choose an overly elaborate name for a girl, like Angelica or Katherine, but Bow wasn't like that. The name "Bow" was simple and clean. Thus, I couldn't help but smile at her name. I helped Bow up, and she glided away gracefully.
About a month and a half later, I was in another dimension entirely -- Station Square. Hedgehogs, foxes, cats -- the plaza was jam-packed with them. I sashayed into a small "greasy spoon" restaurant to get some Sprite. There, I found my good friend Locky, who was spending his time here to get away from his job in Fan City. I greeted him and sat down calmly. Locky had a cup of coffee in his right hand, and he was sipping out of it like a Slowbro. Willing to start a conversation, I asked him about his former crush on Vivian. Locky replied, "Oh, don't even go there. Vivian is transgender, and it's kinda creepy being in love with a ghost anyway." "Does it really matter if he or she is transgender?" I ask. "You're friends with Exo, and HE seems to be transgender. You're not mad about THAT, are you?" "Uh, no. It's just the ghost part. ...Wait, are you in love with a ghost?" All of a sudden, I thought of Bow, the female ghost I met in the distant, distant, distant, not-so-distant past. Locky had a point... for once.
All of a sudden, I wake up. I ponder Locky's question. Am I really in love with Lady Bow? She's a ghost, and it can be kind of creepy to have a crush on a ghost. But like I told myself months ago, the name "Bow" is simple and clean. Yeah, I say in my head, maybe I really AM in love with her. And I fall asleep, smiling as I listen to Bow's breathing.
