Sonic the Hedgehog is a 2016 platforming game released for PlayStation 4 and various computer hardware. It was released to celebrate Sonic's 25th anniversary, and is basically a compilation of Sonic games and extras, along with two new games; one of which was an engine test and another one which was scrapped. Both are now made real.

    • There's an unlockable "Tails" mode, in which Sonic is kidnapped rather than Tails. Tails can fly, swim and Spin Dash, and rather than Silver Sonic, he faces Steel Miles. In the Bad Ending, Sonic does not die (unlike Tails, who is presumed to be killed in Sonic 2's Bad Ending), but Eggman seizes control over the world, captures Tails and succeeds in his plans.

Sonic X-Treme is one of the two games in the compilation never released before. It was originally going to be released, but was ultimately cancelled due to development issues. It reuses the graphics it was going to have if it was released.


The story is the same as the one that was going to be in the game's final version, but with slight additions and changes, one of these being the complete removal of Mips, Tiara Boobowski and her father. The base is that Eggman has rebuilt his Death Egg larger then Sonic's planet, and it ripped planets from their orbits. Sonic, Tails and Knuckles quickly teleport to one of the surrounding planets, and from there on they try to reach and wreck the Death Egg from inside out.


NOTE: The gameplay is mostly copied from the Sonic News Network page, but with some additions and changes. To further the traditional Sonic "go-anywhere-or-run-through" formula, every level is designed in a tube-like fashion; Sonic would be able to Spindash onto walls, thus changing the direction of gravity and the rotation of the level itself, much like the special stages in Knuckles' Chaotix. In addition, a fish-eye lens-styled camera is put into place so players can see more of their surroundings at any given time.

It is now known that at one point in the development process, there was a possibility for three playable characters. The characters planned were Knuckles the Echidna, Miles "Tails" Prower and Sonic the Hedgehog. There are several gameplay styles that are triggered at certain points: Traditional-style play (top-down and side-scrolling views), fish-eye style levels, and Tails would occasionally play in first-person flight mode.

There are eight Zones: Jade Gully Zone, Blue Ocean Zone, Crystal Frost Zone, Red Sands Zone, Galaxy Fortress Zone, Metal Blade Zone and Death Egg Zone. Sonic is equipped with a large set of new moves, including a spin slash, a ring throwing ability, a ring powered shield, a sonic boom attack, a power ball, a blue mass-esque blast attack and the Super-Peel Out, which, as a new addition, temporarily leaves behind blue-white sparkles, that damage enemies.

In addition, there's now a health bar. Upon taking damage, the bar decreases as the character loses Rings. Rings refill the bar, and so do the Rings Sonic/Tails/Knuckles drops. However, the Rings he recollects will not refill the bar to the same extent as before taking damage.

Unlike the cancelled game, Tiara Boobowski is not playable. Tiara and her father are completely left out of the game.

Playable Characters



  • Spin Slash: Sonic charges a Spin Dash, but his quills spin above him. After being released, upon making contact with a foe, Sonic grabs it, throws it up and gets it to fall on his quills. Extremely similar to his SSB Up Throw.
  • Ring Throw: Sonic throws two Rings. (Two Rings are then depleted from his total).
  • Ring Shield: Sonic creates a temporary yellow shield around him, which usurps Rings as long as it's active. This also allows Sonic to Homing Attack enemies.
  • Sonic Boom: Sonic glows cyan, as he starts levitating 10 cm above the ground, and after 7 seconds, a blue-white ring comes out of his chest, and speeds accross the screen like a shockwave.
  • Power Ball: Sonic creates a turquoise ball of energy, and fires it to the closest enemy.
  • Blue Mass: Sonic creates a white arrow-head shaped energy mass (with blue outlines), and fires it at the nearest enemy.


  • Idle: Just stands there. If left alone for 15 seconds, he will start breakdancing.
  • Damaged: Gets knocked backwards in a lying position, as in S3&K.
  • Defeated by normal means: Spins around a few times, then falls on his belly, eyes closed.
  • Defeated by electricity: Stands still in his electrified position for a few seconds, then falls on his sides, eyes closed.
  • Drowned: Holds his chest in fear, then floats up to the surface while lying on his back, eyes closed.
  • Defeated by falling from a high place: Lands on his knees, then collapses on the floor, eyes closed.
  • Victory: Performs his S3&K victory pose.


NOTE: Most of Tails' abilities are taken from Sonic Battle, Tails Adventures and Tails' Skypatrol.


  • Punch: Tails punches twice in front of him, followed by an uppercut.
  • Hammer: Tails hits the ground with a hammer.
  • Bombs: Throws Bombs.
  • Chop: Tails performs a karate chop.
  • Tail Swipe: Tails spins around like a tornado, followed by a tail attack.
  • Fly: Tails flies, and can move freely through the air. After 7 seconds, he tires out.
  • Swim: Tails can actually swim, though only for 6,197 seconds.
  • Ring: Tails throws a Ring, like a boomerang.
  • Invention: Tails uses one of his SB inventions to attack.


  • Idle: Stands still, arms swinging back and forth, tails (his tails, not Tails itself) swinging up and down. If left alone for 15 seconds, he will fall asleep, curling up like a cat.
  • Damaged: Gets knocked backwards in a sitting position, as in S3&K.
  • Defeated by normal means: Wobbles around for 5 seconds, dizzy (with stars circling above his head), then falls flat on his belly, eyes closed.
  • Defeated by electricity: After getting electrocuted, he spins around, then falls sprawled on his back, eyes closed.
  • Drowned: Holds his chest in pain, then floats up to the surface, lying on his sides, eyes closed.
  • Defeated by falling from a high place: Lands in a sitting position, then collapses on his sides, eyes closed.
  • Defeated in first-person flight mode: Gets exhausted and plummets downwards.
  • Victory: Performs his S3&K victory pose.



  • Rock Throw: Grabs a boulder and throws it.
  • Kick: Performs a kick combo.
  • Glide: Glides downwards.
    • Wall Climb: Upon hitting a wall while Gliding, Knuckles can freely climb it. NOTE: Not all walls can be climbed on.
  • Up: Same as Glide, but Glides upwards. He can only do this for 6 seconds, and can not cling on walls.


  • Idle: Stands there, occasionally exercising punches.
  • Damaged: Flies backwards in his S3&K damaged animation. Occasionally, he will use his "falling into Marble Garden/Mushroom Hill" animation instead.
  • Defeated by normal means: Gets knocked backwards and lands in a sitting position.
  • Defeated by electricity: Stands there in his S3&K death animation, occasionally getting electrified again.
  • Drowned: Floats up to the surface in his S3&K drowning animation.
  • Defeated by falling from a high place: Collapses in a sitting position.
  • Defeated while clinging walls: Loses his grip on the wall and plummets downwards, landing in his defeated position from the Hidden Palace boss fight in S3&K.

Basic Moveset

  • Spin Dash: The character charges up while rolling, then speeds forward (still rolling).
  • Roll: While running, the character rolls on the ground for a few seconds.
  • Jump: The character jumps.
  • Move/Walk: Do i have to explain ?
  • Crouch: The character ducks.

Special Levels

Some levels have something special unique to said level. Also, Sonic is used as template in this list, but it can happen to any character unless stated otherwise.

  • Wolf Den, Jade Gully Zone: For the level's entirety, Sonic is hunted by wolves, who usually sneak up on them. The key to winning, is progressing normally until leaves or trees vibrate; Sonic must then duck and do nothing until the wolves go away. Even making the smallest move will result in the wolf jumpscaring Sonic, jumping on him and bites him, resulting in a Game Over. To compensate with this, the level lacks enemies.
  • Water Lake, Blue Ocean Zone: There are tidals which can push Sonic or drown him.
  • Cryogenesis, Crystal Frost Zone: If Sonic stands still for too long, he freezes dead.
  • Icegates, Crystal Forest: There are several gates in the area that must be opened with keys in order to progress.
  • Pyro Pools, Red Sands Zone: Quicksand and tornados are moving through the zone. To fend them off, Sonic must Spin Dash.
  • Tombs 'n Traps, Red Sands Zone: Again, keys must be collected, but Sonic must apparoach them carefully, or he'll get crushed by a tomb when going too fast.
  • Nightmare Bridge, Metal Blade Zone: The entire level is a huge bridge, that must be crossed carefully; certain actions will get it to collapse.
  • Anti-Gravitation, Galaxy Fortress Zone: After Sonic steps forward twice, he spins out and gets pulled one step backwards, due to a device at the center. This way, he must beat the level.
  • Death Egg Zone: The entire zone has a global time limit to reach the final boss. The time limit is kept during the five acts. You have 17 minutes and 19 seconds to reach it.


  • Originally, Blue Ocean was not a full zone, but part of Crystal Frost Zone (sometimes referred to as White Frost Zone). It was also a test level. This was changed here.
  • Sonic X-Treme runs on three engines, SonicBOOM, Doom and Project Condor.
  • Despite the game being classic themed, Dr. Eggman is always referred to as "Eggman" and never as "Robotnik".
  • Originally, Tiara and Gazebo Boobowski were going to be included, but where ultimately scrapped completely.
