Sonic Team coined the idea to Sega but the major developers are KeyHole studio's. The game's development is being supervised by series Co-creator Yuji Naka even though he doesn't have much to do with the games development. The game was announced at E3 2015 and eventually shown at Tokyo Game show 2015. The Beta was released on October 14 2015 and was met with positive feedback. Somecallmejohnny, a gaming YouTuber, stated while the game has its flaws, its a good nostalgic trip in a box. It was later shown again at the Sonic party in July 2016 with more positive feedback. It's release date was also slated to October 2016 in America and sometime later everywhere else. They also announced that a demo of Sonic Mania would be included in the pre-ordered edition.
The planned release is mid October. Pre-orders began on June 21st and also a quick demo of Sonic Mania was added in for those who pre-ordered or bought the game on Day 1.
When released. The collection was highly praised for its faithfulness to the games and the ports were also praised. IGN stated that while it is just a collection, they are glad to see Sega, Sonic Team and Vision putting a lot of effort into just a small nostalgic box because it shows how much they appreciate the series as a whole. IGN gave it a 8.9 out of 10. Whats funny is that earlier in the year, they had criticized the series saying that it was never good (It was later discovered as just a publicity stunt).
The game sold 130K copies in under 24 hours making it one of Visions highest selling games.
