Similar to other Sonic Games, the player is able to control Sonic is 2D and 3D environments, with two instances of Sonic being Classic Sonic and Modern Sonic, both using only one form of movement (2D for Classic, 3D for Modern). Sonic is able to run, dash, jump and perform a variety of techniques in order to complete the goal for a stage.

Sonic is able to perform his; Spin Dash, Homing Attack, Spin Attack, Spin Jump, Air Boost, Jump Dash & Light Speed Dash techniques. Spin Dash, Air Boost, Jump Dash & Light Speed Dash can all be upgraded to increase speed and in the case of the first three, the duration can be increased. The Homing Attack & Spin Attack can also be upgraded for multi-targetting as well as more destructive capabilities.

While moving in 3D environments Sonic can additionally use his Drift, Quick Step & Sonic Boost abilities. Drifting can be upgraded to be more controlled, while the Sonic Boost can be increased in power. While on Rails Sonic can Grind, Grind Step & Grind Leap, the Grind Leap allows Sonic to jump up or down vertically parallel rails. Grinding can be upgraded to increase maximum speed.

Additionally Sonic can also; Crouch, Double Jump, Hop, Spin Kick, Slide, Sky Dive & Wall Jump. Double Jump must be upgraded to be used, the Spin Kick can be upgraded for increased destructive capabilities, the Slide can be upgraded to reduce loss of acceleration & Wall Jump can be upgraded to allow Sonic to stick to walls for longer.

Time Crack

After the events of Sonic Generations the Time Eater's destruction, cracks in time had begun to emerge due to the forcefulness of returning the space's taken out of time back to where they belonged. Eventually these cracks started sucking stuff in from Time and Space.

Meanwhile Sonic and co. were celebrating a recent defeat of Eggman with the local animals he'd rescued. However just as he is greeted by Shadow and Rogue, a giant crack in the sky forms pulling everyone in, including the animals, Eggman, Sonic's Friends and himself.

Sonic soon wakes up to find he is in a warped realm of islands floating in space, at the same time he sees another crack open up and watches something hurtle out of it. Rushing over, he finds it's his past self. Classic Sonic quickly wakes up, to the surprise of seeing Modern Sonic again, while initially confused he looks around and the two begin to investigate.

Like Sonic Generations, Sonic Generations 2: Time Breaker contains many locations from previous Sonic Titles as well as its own set, in total there are 60 zones, three from 18 of the main series titles as well as 6 original Zones. Each trio of zones is categorized by its game of origin, interestingly Sonic Generations itself doesn't have any zones most likely due to there only being two locations in the game not from a previous Sonic Game.

All Zones contain 2 acts for Classic Sonic and 2 acts for Modern Sonic, although the player only has to complete one Sonic's version of an act to continue, the same applies for bosses.
