Sonic Legacy (ソニックレガシー, Sonikkuregashī) is an upcoming 2D-side scrolling platform game for the Nintendo Switch, Playstation 4, and PC coming in Holiday 2020, with a 3DS version releasing early 2021. Originally code-named Project Memories, the game emulates the Sonic Advance playstyle, while having gameplay from other Sonic games. Trying to merge the best parts of the series, it also has a completely original storyline, levels, and bosses, as well as using an enhanched version of the partner system seen Sonic Advance 3 and Sonic Heroes.

This game is developed by Sonic Team, this time working along side the returning Headcannon and PagodaWest games from Sonic Mania fame. Team Overbound (Known for the fangame, Sonic Time Twisted) and Nefault1st (Known for many Sonic fangames, most notably Sonic Vs Darkness, Knuckles: Halloween Tale, and Salom Adventure) and it is the first Sonic game to have a soundtrack created by the community. Many of the game's music is created by many different composers.

Development[]

Sonic Legacy began development in 2018, after the release of Sonic Forces. Sonic Team wanted to create a Sonic game that not only went back to it's roots, but ramped up it's gameplay. Sonic Team took the criticism they had from Sonic Forces, and decided to make an original game with no reused content.

According to Neafult1st, Sonic Team went to him and asked him for a job, which he happily accepted. Later, they added Team Overbound, and Headcannon once again to help in development. PagodaWest Games later joined, and along wih many composers from the internet, Project Memories was born. The team referred to the game as a "mixture of Sonic Mania, Sonic Rush, and Sonic Advance"

The game was revealed at E3 2018, showing a picture of Sonic, Knuckles and Tails in a level based off an construction area. (Which would later be Oil Sludgeway Zone.) Due to popular demand, a 3DS port of the game was developed by Renegade Kid, and will be released in early 2021.

Story[]

After the events of Sonic Forces, Dr. Eggman starts planning for his next scheme. Through narrow research, he finds the Life Orbs, mystical spheres that keep the planet in balance. If a region's Life Orb is gone, bad things can happen, and Eggman knows this. He finds one Life Orb and starts to study it's effects, the test showed that the power inside the Orbs are unremarkable, being able to power his army with just one. With this, he creates a new badnik army and a new team called "The Metal Crusaders", led by Metal Sonic, as he goes to search for the Life Orbs. As he begins his search, he finds a teenage girl who he makes his "prot-egg-e" named Omlette, and adopts her as step daughter.

Beginning []

Meanwhile, Sonic and Tails are riding to Paradise Island, the place where Vanilla, Cream The Rabbit's mother, is having a birthday party. Along the way, they notice an explosion occurring near the center of the island, and the duo, curious about the explosion, travel to check it out. Upon landing, they meet with Eggman, who sends Metal Sonic to attack and distract them as Eggman is flying away. After defeating Metal Sonic and seeing him fly away, they go over to the birthday party location, where they notice Eggman flying off with Vanilla.

Sonic and Tails meet with Knuckles, Cream, Amy, Marine Silver and Blaze, who all go to save Vanilla. Along the way, they get thrown into a conflict between Eggman's badniks, and GUN, with Shadow, Rouge and Espio joining Sonic and co. on the quest for Dr. Eggman. They meet up with Eggman, who battles the heroes and loses to them. Questioning the scientist, they learn that he was using the Life Orbs to power his army, and that he had control over the literal fabric of the world. Showing his power, he uses the orbs to create a vortex, in which he makes the heroes unconscious.

When the group comes to, they find themselves in a pocket dimension. Accoriding to Omochao and Marine The Raccoon, Eggman is taking the Life Orbs from the planet, and is using their power to recreate the world into a horrible mess. Sonic, along with his pals, go to stop Eggman. Meanwhile, they use the area from the pocket dimension as a hub, keeping resources there as they travel to the other parts of the planet.

Upon reaching Crying Planet Zone, they discover what the Life Orb's absence does to certain parts of the world, seeing part of their planet in a acidic wasteland. Sonic and friends take out the Metal Crusaders, as they learn more about Eggman's plans and recover the power to the life orbs.

The heroes reach Eggman's power mining area near the end of the game, where they take out his power generator. However, this was a bad choice, as the explosion causes the fabric of the planet to collapse. This causes the heroes to travel a warped and bent version of the Pocket Dimension. Upon reaching the end, they combat a strange black monster, who attacks the heroes head on. Sonic and friends reach Eggman and follow him to his newest model of the Death Egg.

From this point on, the ending of the game can differ depending on what items you acquired. Depending on your ending, the final boss and storyline can be completely different. There are 4 endings.

Horrible Ending[]

Sonic and crew reach Eggman's final arena and battle his newest machine, the Egg Bomb. Upon Eggman's defeat, the Death Egg begins to self destruct due to the Egg Bomb's explosion. The heroes attempt to save Vanilla, however, a mysterious black substance traps her. Unable to save her, the heroes escape in an escape pod, with the Death Egg Mk III exploding. However, the explosion spreads the Life Orb's power into Eggman, who, now empowered with the energy of the Life Orbs, battles the heroes once again and wins. The game ends with a picture of Dr. Eggman laughing over robotic versions of the heroes, as they construct a statue in his name.

This is the worst ending of the game, and it is gotten by completing the game without gaining all 14 Chaos and Sol Emeralds and without collecting all 28 Life Orbs.

Normal Ending[]

Sonic and crew reach Eggman's final arena and battle his newest battle machine, the Egg Brawler. Upon the defeat of Eggman's robots, the Death Egg once again self destructs, and the heroes again attempt to save Vanilla. A mysteirous black substance traps her and the heroes escape, unable to save her. Due to having all of the Life Orbs restored, they travel to Mobius due to the explosion, recovering all of the planet. Dr. Eggman is sent off into onto the other side of the planet, along with Metal Sonic, Cubot and Orbot, as the heroes cheer Cream up and run off into the distance, standing up once again to stop Dr. Eggman's next scheme. The game ends with a picture of Sonic, Tails, Amy and Cream walking together, with Cream wearing a Handkerchief given my her mother, smiling in remembrance.

This is the "Bad" ending of the game and it is gotten by completing the game with all 28 Life Orbs, but not all 14 Chaos and Sol Emeralds. This gives the player an extra stage

Wishful Ending[]

Sonic and crew reach Eggman's final arena and battle his newest battle machine, the Egg Brawler. Upon the defeat of Eggman's robots, the Death Egg once again self destructs, and the heroes again attempt to save Vanilla. A black substance traps her, however, Sonic is able to turn Super Sonic and save her, and escapes along with the other heroes. Due to all of the Life Orbs not being received, a select few (Equivalent to how many and which Life Orbs the player has collected) regions of the planet recovered. Dr. Eggman is empowered once again, and Super Sonic fights and defeats him, with the heroes deciding to help recover the planet afterwards. The game ends with the heroes working together to repair the damages of the world.

This is the "Wishful" ending of the game and it is gotten by completing the game with not all 28 Life Orbs, but all 14 Chaos and Sol Emeralds. This gives the player an extra boss fight.

Best Ending[]

The events from the last few endings all conclude entirely except with a new boss, the Egg Wrecker. When the Egg Wrecker is defeated, the Death Egg doesn't self destruct and the heroes are able to save Vanilla. However, a black substance submerges and knocks Dr. Eggman away. The crew attack the blob as it transforms into a monster similar to a dragon made out of black slime, caused by the residue from the Life Orbs. The player is then taken to the new Annhilation Zone, where multiple characters transform into their super states, and defeat the monster. The game ends with everyone finding peace and the world normal again. They continue Vanilla's party like nothing ever happened.

This ending is found by getting all collectibles and completing Final Nebula Zone. Upon completion, an extra zone will be added to the Zone Hub, allowing the player to play through it.

Gameplay[]

Sonic Legacy is a combonation of the 2D Sonic playstyle. Being more based off of the Advance/Rush series, the game also takes inspiration from the Genesis titles, the Game Gear/Master System titles, and the modern games, with many mechanics and gimmicks being from those games. The game has the player going through 27 Zones, each separated into 5 (6, if you consdier the boss act as an act) acts each. (Except for a select few) All zones end with a boss act which take the player to the next zone when it is beaten. On the 1st, 3rd, and 5th act, there is a minigame the player has to go defeat to progress through the stage.

In gameplay, the series' collectible Rings can be found everywhere. Like in previous games, they act as health for the playable characters As long as the player holds at least one, they will be protected from damage. If a character gets damaged, they will drop all their Rings, though some can be recollected before they disappear. However, in this game, lost rings will be put into bigger rings, allowing the player to potentially collect all of their lost rings. Taking damage without any Rings will cost the player a life (called a "try" in this game). A character will also lose a try if they spend too long underwater without replenishing their air supply, overheat, get crushed or fall into a bottomless pit. Losing a try makes the player start from the last Star Post they passed, or from the beginning of the Act if they have not passed any Checkpoints. Once the player loses all of their lives, they can spend a continue to go back to their last checkpoint. However, if they get a game over, they start over in the hub world at the even most act they have completed. (For example, if the player has beat Act 2, or 4, they will be sent back to the point where they completed those Acts.)

The games features the standard Spin Jump, Spin Attack and Spin Dash movesets in addition to unique maneuvers for each character; every character has their own movesets unqiue to them, as well as their own stats. Like in Sonic Heroes, every character (or certain teams) have a Power Attack that is available once your Power Gauge is filled.

Beside the main game, the player can also collect the Chaos Emeralds: by entering one of the Giant Rings hidden throughout the Acts, the player can enter a Special Stage and obtain a Chaos Emerald by completing it. Special stages can also be entered via finishing the stage with at least 50 rings, creating a Giant Ring at the end of the stage. Bonus Stages from Sonic 3 and Knuckles also return, which are accessed by entering a Star Circle that appears when the player passes a Star Post while carrying enough Rings.

Returning from Sonic Unleashed, EXP can be gained and used to level up your characters and achieve new skills for them. EXP is collected via collecting a Chaos Orb, which can be obtained by breaking certain monitors, enemies or even completing missions. Characters can be leveled up, even if they aren't currently playable.

Hub Worlds[]

Sonic Legacy uses a Hub World system, similar to Sonic Advance 3. When a game is started, the player will be taken to Pocket Dimension, where they can travel to each Zone through a Zone Gate. When in a Zone Hub, the player has to play the zone in the Act order. (Act 1, Act 2, etc...) When the player beats a Zone, they will be taken to the next Zone Hub. When an act is completed, the player can always travel back to the hub world by using a Dimension Ring, always found near the beginning of the Act. When an act is completed, the player can choose to head back to the hub world, or continue on with the acts.

In the Zone Hub, the player can buy items to use, play Minigames to gain lives and more rings, and even change their team.

Minigames[]

  • Capsule Bopping
  • Badnik Crash
  • Lottery Chance

Character Bosses[]

Each zone in the game has a special boss fight against another character in the Sonic series. Depending on your console, the final zone will have a special boss fight against a 3rd party character.

Team System[]

Similar to Sonic Advance 3, this game uses a tag team mechanic. The player can pick a character to control, and two partner characters to follow him/her through the game. One partner will function like how Tails does in Sonic 2, and follow the player, being able to perform special Tag Actions. While, the other partner will often attack, assist or collect helpful items for you.

Team Types[]

When selecting a team, there are 4 bars next to your characters. This is your type influces meters, and depening on your team, this can show you what strengths and weaknesses your current team has. There are 4 Types a team can be classified under-

  • Speed - Revolves around speedy platforming. Normally influced by Sonic and Shadow.
  • Fly - Revolves around vertical movment. Normally influced by Tails.
  • Power - Revolves around attacking. Influenced greatly by Knuckles.
  • Tech - Revolves around platforming. No real influence.

Sonic Legacy also features zone transitions, similarly to Sonic 3 and Knuckles, and many of the items are from older Sonic games. The game also features 12 elemental shields, and the ability to get both the Chaos and Sol Emeralds.

The game has 420 emblems to collect, and Red Star Rings that unlock extra content.

Gameplay[]

The Chaos Stages play similarly to Sonic Runners. The player is show in a 2D plane with their 3 characters moving towards the right by themselves. The player must use them to collect rings and other items to get a high enough score. If the player gets a score equal to, or higher than the needed score, they win that section. A player has to win 3 sections to gain a Chaos Emerald. There are items the player can buy in the Zone Hub to help them win.

The player loses the stage if all characters gets hit without rings, or lose a life. Rings aren't required to win the special stage. If a player fails a Chaos Stage, they can spend a number of rings from their ring bank in return. This number of rings will increase depending on how many times the player restarted the stage in one go.
