Sonic Blur is the 2015 reboot series of Sega's mascot franchise Sonic the Hedgehog. The series began in 2015 with the first installment of the series Sonic Blur: Episode α being released through digital services to the Wii U, PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PCs. The series was made to create a more "consistent" series of Sonic games, with consistent plot and gameplay through out each installment. Notably, the series has no involvement from the original series creator, Yuji Naka nor from the head of Sonic Team, Takashi Iizuka and instead is being helm by Stardust Citadel's Locky Lorean.

Sonic Blur takes inspiration from the Archie's Sonic the Hedgehog in terms of storyline, even utilizing same characters from the Archie comics, although the plotline of the stories are different. The gameplay brings the series backs to it's 2D roots while also including features from the 3D installments as well.

As of now, the series has recieved critical and fanbase acclaim. The first installment of the series was met with positive reviews from fans and critics alike, although both noted the lack of new ideas in the gameplay or the story department, which was the intetion of the team while working on Episode α to create a simple Sonic game while future games would further expand on the formula set by α.

Development

The original pitch for Sonic Blur was a TV series in the style of the Sonic SatAM cartoon, having it's own canon and characters separted from the game's storyline. While noticing the decline of action focused cartoons in favor of comedy focused animated shows, CEO of Stardust Citadel, Locky Lorean, instead opted of making a game demo utilizing the same idea of the original pitch. The demo was greenlit by Sega and as such the project went on.

The pitch for the first game was different than the final result, originally levels would feature different characters, something akin to Sonic Adventure 2 and all the three episodes were originally meant to be one singular game. However, Locky Lorean decided to split the game into three episodes after taking notice of the difference of the storylines between chapters that could fit well in a episodic format. The different character per level idea was replaced for a story per character, similar to Sonic Adventure.

Episode α also didn't originally had Knuckles in it, with his story meant to be told in the second chapter, but the acclaim the game was recieving, the developers decided to add in a DLC chapter featuring Knuckles as a little tease to things to come.
