Sonic Adventure X is an upcoming American-Australian video game film based on SEGA's Sonic the Hedgehog series, produced by Topaz Central, and distributed by Universal Pictures. It is intended to be the seventeenth film in the Smash Cinematic Universe (SCU), and the fifth film of Phase Three.

The film retells the same events of the original Sonic Adventure game, with Dr. Eggman hatching plans to resurrect the legend of Chaos, and Sonic and his friends uniting together to defeat them. The film stars Ben Schwartz as the voice of Sonic the Hedgehog, alongside James Marsden, Tika Sumpter, and Jim Carrey.

Synopsis[]

In an alternate continuity of Paramount's film series (just go with it), Sonic has found a peaceful life on Earth, until he finds a strange water creature in the middle of his hometown. Figuring that this scheme could have Eggman's name on it, he starts a journey to find his friends and help each other to get the Chaos Emeralds and stop Eggman's plans.

Plot[]

Cast[]

Voice cast[]

  • Ben Schwartz as Sonic the Hedgehog:
A blue hedgehog who can run at supersonic speeds originally from Mobius, but found peace on Earth, after the former world went into turmoil, and now resides in Green Hills, South Island. Sonic is confirmed to be 18 years old in this, being aged-up to fit the narrative. Despite the studio change, Sonic's characterisation was more-or-less the same as Paramount's, but Schwartz stated that he would like Sonic to "evolve and mature as the films go on.". Roger Craig Smith, Sonic's current video game voice actor, was hired as a voice consultant specifically for Sonic, sounding a bit older with a youthful charm.
  • Idris Elba as Knuckles the Echidna:
A serious and aggressive, yet gullible and short tempered, red echidna who is an experienced formidable fighter with super strength and gifted with the ability to glide and climb walls. Knuckles, at 19 years, is the last of the Echidnas, which were rewritten towards the present and having a deeper connection to Chaos. Chosen Jacobs voices a young Knuckles on Angel Island.
  • Colleen O'Shaughnessey as Miles "Tails" Prower:
An yellow two-tailed fox who is Sonic's sidekick and new best friend. Tails is a young genius and is gifted with the ability to fly by spinning or rotating his tails like a helicopter. Like others, Tails was aged-up, now being 11 years old and his characterisation being learning how to become more confident, similar to his arc in the original game. O'Shaughnessey was initially did not have a contract to return, but was able to return, considering future plans for the trilogy.
  • Chloë Grace Moretz as Tikal the Echidna:
An orange echidna who is the daughter of the tribe leader Pachacamac, and a guardian of the Master Emerald, who has a mysterious power to conceal it, but met her fate by the release of Chaos.
  • Ian McShane as Pachacamac:
    ???
  • ??? as E-102 Gamma:
    ???

The supportive Team Rose appears in the film, however, only two have a presence in the movie. These two characters are: Hailee Steinfeld as Amy Rose, a pink hedgehog who is a fan of Sonic and starts to join his adventures; Sophia Lillis as Cream the Rabbit, an orange/white rabbit who is Amy's best friend and sidekick, who didn't debut until 2002's Sonic Advance 2; and Cream's Chao friend, Cheese, who only makes a few sounds voiced by an unknown actor. Like the other characters, Amy and Cream were aged up by 3 years. Both Amy and Cream share the same amount of screen time, as a result of Amy's story being shortened to make room for the stories of Sonic, Tails (by an extent), Knuckles, and Gamma.

Additionally, the character of Chaos, an ancient water creature from old times, appears as the joint-secondary antagonist of the film, along with Majdoub's Agent Stone, but is mute throughout the film, only speaking through water sound effects. Big the Cat, now a 21-year-old big and lazy purple cat, and his best frog friend named Froggy; make cameo appearances throughout the film, stripping down their roles.

Live-action cast[]

  • Jim Carrey as Dr. "Eggman" Ivo Robotnik:
The brilliant robotics expert and mad scientist who covets Sonic's abilities and plans to exploit them for personal gain, using Chaos to get revenge on Sonic and achieve his dreams of world conquest.
  • Catherine Ashmore Bradley as Grace Nelson:
The niece of Wade Whipple, to which Sonic acts as her brother/mentor-figure. Grace is an original human character exclusive to the SCU. Julia Butters was considered for the role, but couldn't commit, due to scheduling conflicts.
  • James Marsden as Tom Wachowski:
The sheriff of Green Hills, South Island, who helped Sonic give his place on Earth and defeat Robotnik in the first film, now acting as Sonic's adoptive father.
  • Tika Sumpter as Maddie Wachowski:
Tom's veterinarian wife who helped Sonic in the first film, now acting as Sonic's second adoptive mother.
  • Adam Pally as Wade Whipple:
A deputy sheriff in Green Hills and Tom's closest friend. In this continuity, he has a niece named Grace Nelson
  • Lee Majdoub as Agent Stone:
A government agent who works for Robotnik, now acting as the secretary and the official representative for their Eggman Empire. Majdoub was brought back because of positive reception on the character and the actor himself. Both Majdoub and Shadic stated that they have "plans for Stone in the future".

In the mid-credits scene, seeing that the film is released before Super Smash Bros. Subspace, some characters reprise their roles, which include Charlie Day as Mario, ??? as Link, ??? as Pit, Brie Larson as Samus Aran, and Oscar Isaac as Solid Snake. Yoshi and Kirby are also present, but they appear mute. Tabuu makes a cameo, but their character is obscured.

Production[]

Casting[]

The cast from the Paramount film series reprised their roles for the Smash Cinematic Universe, as Shadic felt like the casting was on point. For the entire series, the casting choices are kept so that fans can speculate and discuss on who it is, until it's confirmed. Julia Butters was approached on taking on the role, but due to scheduling conflicts, her representatives failed to make an agreement. Catherine Ashmore Bradley was chosen instead, being linked to The Loud House, a Nickelodeon property (who is owned by Paramount). Additionally, her original character, Grace Nelson, was originally written as a niece of Tom, essentially replacing JoJo; this was removed and rewritten to be the niece of Wade Whipple.

Differences[]

During the production of the movie, it was decided that some plot points would be modified, cut, or combined, in order to keep the movie flow going, as well as introduce new elements to the plot. There are differences to both the original game and Paramount's film series.
