Sheriff is the star of the very first game Nintendo ever made (also titled Sheriff), as well as one of Nintendo's oldest original characters (beating Mr. Game & Watch by a year, Mario and DK (Cranky Kong?) by two).

His original game saw him surrounded by bandits with a fence protecting him. If any part of the fence was broken, bandits would sometimes go inside to deal with him personally. His job was to shoot down all the bandits and ultimately rescue his girlfriend from them. The game was innovative at the time for the fact that you used two 8-way joysticks: one to control him, and the other to aim the gun.

He then languished in obscurity for 20 years before slowly being brought back to the public's attention via the Smash Bros. games. First, Super Smash Bros. Mêlée made a trophy out of him. Then, in both Smash 4 games, he was elevated to an Assist Trophy. As an Assist, he moves around in a choppy way, making the sounds he made in his home game, and fires shots from his gun at opponents. Each shot deals roughly 15%. The shots can be reflected (i.e. by the Starfox cast's Shines), but not absorbed (i.e. by Ness and Lucas's PK Magnets).

On SSS, Sheriff is a playable character. Due to how primitive his home game was, much of his universe in SSS had to be designed from scratch, as did his moveset. However, his gun remains a major part of his moveset. He can also summon a horse, lasso, and fling TNT sticks at opponents. His home stage is Saloon. He debuted late in the show's second season, in August of 1974.
