Shantae is a series of platformer games created by Matt and Erin Bozon and developed by WayForward, starring a half-genie named Shantae, who is Scuttle Town's Guardian Genie. The games follow Shantae's adventures to defend Scuttle Town and the rest of Sequin Land from conquest and/or destruction at the hands of evil, particularly her main enemy, the "lady pirate" Risky Boots.
With the exception of Half-Genie Hero, the series primarily focuses on a Metroidvania style of gameplay, taking place in a single, large world with interconnected areas that Shantae can travel through to search for objects to deliver to her friends or allies who need them. Half-Genie Hero is more of a traditional 2D platformer.
All games in the series, aside from Pirate's Curse, focus on Shantae's transformation abilities she can use thanks to her inherited genie magic; throughout the series she can transform into a monkey, an elephant, and a bat, among other creatures.
