Chapter Two: Rethink
"I don't believe it" I said, looking at my stacks of haphazardly placed papers on my desk. "Just like that she...she turned it down like there was no value in my findings...I feel...almost worthless at this point. I mean, if I didn't have this, I'd sit here and do nothing all day."
"I know, Avez...Zeva can be a hard soul to work with." Adsev Kala said, standing next to me in my room inside the Advisor Tower. "But you must remember, just because she turned down helping you doesn't discredit anything you have on this desk.
Adsev Kala looked over my desk, scanning all my work. I felt comforted by this. If he saw value in it, that could keep me going. I watched as he looked pleased at my efforts.
For a second, his face turned puzzled, but returned to it's blank-ish pleased state. Then, he turned to me.
"Do you mind if I look at this, back in my room? I think I may be able to help you actually."
Those words meant the world to me right then.
"Oh, no, not at all. Please, look it over." I gathered my stacks, banded them together, and handed them to him.
"Thank you, Avez. You know, your work here has greatly surprised me. No one I've ever worked with has ever put this much heart into a hobby, an interest, as a Monota Adsev. Most of them, they slobbed around all day and enjoyed the perks of royalty. You're trying to make something of yourself because your position doesn't do it for you. I admire that. I'll have these papers back to you by tomorrow." Adsev Kala gave me those encouraging words as he walked out of the room.
I looked out my window, glancing over all of the Kagume capital. There was still hope for me. That star might be explained yet.
. . .
"Ah, General Alak, to what do I owe the pleasure?"
"Greetings, your majesty. I have news of dire importance."
"Your brother Avez has been researching a peculiar item, is that correct?"
"Oh yes, the fairy-tale star. What about it?"
"You were right to oppose helping him. That star-"
"I'm going to stop you right there, General. Whatever you have to say, I already know."
"How? I didn't know anyone else knew the truth behind that star...except for who told me."
"Someone told me a day like this would come..."
"A day where Avez foolishly researches a very dangerous entity?"
"No...a day where I'd have to kill you for knowing too much."
