Roy makes his third appearance as a playable character to the Super Smash Bros. franchise in Super 5mash Bros. 5. Roy was originally in Super Smash Bros. Melee as a secret character from the Fire Emblem franchise but wasn't included in the roster for Super Smash Bros. Brawl though returned as a DLC character in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. Roy utilizes powerful sword techniques that incorporates fire-based attacks while dealing damage with his entire sword rather than the tip like Marth.

Special Custom Set A

Name Damage Description
Neutral Special Flare Blade 6%-45%, (50% when fully charged, sweetspot), (36% when fully charged, sourspot) Roy pushes his right leg forward and positions his sword upward over his left shoulder, gripping the hilt with both hands and begins to charge his blade with flames, similar to Ike's Eruption before stepping into slamming it overhead onto the ground and creating an explosion. One-Hit KO's Mario from the center of Final Destination when charged to the max. Deals 10% recoil damage to Roy when unleashing a fully charged strike.
Custom 1 Burn Blade 3%-15%, (19% when fully charged, sweetspot), (17% when fully charged, sourspot) It is faster and requires less time to charge to full power but doesn't deal as much damage and nor an explosion. The also will only launch an opponent once the attack fully passes through.
Custom 2 Devouring Flare Blade 4%-28%, (32% when fully charged, sweetspot), (30% when fully charged, sourspot) Charging this attack causes Roy to suck in opponents through a vacuum effect. Releasing stops the vacuum effect and launches the opponent far away after connecting. It does more knockback when it connects fully charged but doesn't cause an explosive.
Side Special Double-Edge Dance --- Roy unleashes a combo of sword slashes in a fashion identical to Marth and Lucina's Dancing Blade. The type of slashes he performs can be influenced by directional inputs, the attacks being little to no difference in animation from Marth and Lucina's, though the knockback is slightly stronger on Roy's end.
Custom 1 Burning Edge Dance --- The attacks deal less damage but does continuous burn hitstun during the duration of the burning instead of knockback. It has faster traveling speed and attack speed then the default and connects easier.
Custom 2 Scorching Edge Dance --- The movement of the attack travels further than the default resulting it propeling Roy forward. However, the attack does slightly more knockback per attack.
Up Special Blazer --- Roy lowers himself as he twirls his sword to reverse grip then leaps skyward while thrusting his arm upwards with his sword ablaze, then juts his arm upwards to the left as he turns counter-clockwise. The ascension can also be angled laterally or vertically.
Custom 1 Burst Blazer --- Functions much like the default but instead of producing a fire effect that burns opponents, it produces four distinct bursts that deal higher knockback and damage or hit than the default up special. It also propels Roy higher up than the default.
Custom 2 Pyro Blazer 2.5% (per hit) Roy propels himself high in the air, creating a stream of of fire that lingers after Roy performs the attack. It will juggle opponents with hitstun when opponents come into contact with. It lasts for 7 seconds before vanishing into thin air.
Custom 2 Counter --- Roy twirls his sword into reverse grip and holds it over his his left forearm, which is bent forward at an angle. He will block incoming attacks by immediately raising his sword up in reverse grip, twirls it into normal grip and steps into a wide downward vertical flame slash to the right. Damage dealt is dependent on the attack countered.
Custom 1 Blast Counter --- Roy performs a counter that, when it connects produces a large explosion effect which launches opponents upwards with high knockback. It suffers from start up and ending lag unlike the default.
Custom 2 Meteor Strike --- When the counter connects in midair, it produces a meteor effect that knocks the opponent downwards. It can OHKO opponents above 40% over the ledge and spike opponents upwards above the stage. It is quicker than the default.

Special Custom Set B

Name Damage Description
Neutral Special Soul Heat 12% (clean), 8% (late) Roy fires a blast of fire that travels along in a straight line. Anyone trapped within the blast gets knocked upwards with burn damage. It has good traveling distance and has good priority.
Custom 1 Soul Wave 2.8% (per hit) Instead of automatically launching opponents when it connects, it pushes them backwards while it travels forward. Coincidentally, it travels a bit further but obviously does lass damage ultimately. The last hit does the most knockback.
Custom 2 Soul Blaze 14% (clean), 12% (late) (aerial), 10% (clean), 6% (late) (grounded) When performed in the air, it produces a Soul Heat that travels downward at an angle and does more damage and knockback while performing it on the ground causes Roy to aim it upwards.


Side Special Lion Strike 15% (uncharged), 28% (charged) Roy can charge this attack by holding down the side special command. Upon letting go, Roy charges forth and dashes in a straight line; slamming his sword into the opponent while dealing high damage and knockback. Once he hits the opponent, it finishes the attack. If performed in the air, it causes Roy to enter into a helpless state. A fully charged version produces an explosion upon making contact.
Custom 1 Reversed Lion Strike 10% (uncharged forward), 22% (charged forward), 18% (uncharged reversed), 30% (charged reverse) The forward dash attack does less damage but has further traveling distance. However, by tilting backwards right after inputting the command Roy dashes backwards. It has less traveling distance but does more damage and knockback when it connects.
Custom 2 Lion Dash 1.8% (per hit) Roy dashes forward and deals damage per hit while burning opponents. It has the longest traveling distance with shortened charge duration.
Up Special Fire Storm 2.3% (loop) Roy jumps into the air and performs five quick full rotations in the air like a buzzsaw; delivering hitstun and damage as he spins upwards. The final hit will always deal the knockback. Very good at trapping low percentage opponents.
Custom 1 Heaven Storm 3.2% (loop) Roy jumps into the air vertically rather than at an angle. It also does more damage but does more knockback per hit rather than the either attacks.
Custom 2 Inferno Storm 1.8% (close), 1.3% (far away) It has a more radius effect than the default, expanding the hitboxes of the attack and allowing for more damage to be dealt from further away then up close. It has less traveling distance.
Down Special Flame Spear 12% (base), 6% (point) Roy slams the sword downwards which causes a spear of flame to shoot up around Roy. The base hitbox knocks opponents upwards and launches them into the next hotbox; dealing damage. It has higher knockback if all attacks connect. The attack reaches a height of two and half Roy bodies.
Custom 1 Blazing Spear 18% (base), 4% (point) The attack does more damage with the first hit but deals less damage on the second hit. The attack launches much higher into the sky. It travels about three and half bodies above Roy.
Custom 2 Fire Claymore 14% (base), 12% (point) The attack has more damage output but it only travels two Roy bodies away. However, it does more knockback compared to the default.

Final Smash

Name Damage Description
Final Smash 1 Critical Hit 1% (1-10 hits), 35% (ending hit) Roy's scabbard appears on the back of his waist and Roy holds his sword over his left shoulder with both hands, pointed diagonally at the opponent. Roy trails his sword on the air clockwise from his left in a full-moon like motion (trapping anyone close with light fire damage) before releasing his right-hand and quickly pulling his sword back, igniting the blade. Roy then grasps the sword with both hands before stepping forward with his left foot into a wide downward diagonal slash to the right, releasing his left hand upon connection, generating a powerful, explosive blazing slash, as well as engulfing the attacked area in flames. Roy then twirls his sword in his right hand 180-degrees clockwise into reverse grip before sheathing his sword. Unlike Marth and Lucina's Critical Hit, Roy's isn't a One-Hit KO. The circular trail can connect up to four times from the front. But if the move is performed with an enemy behind Roy, it can hit up to ten times, dragging the opponent to in front of Roy in time for the final slash.
Final Smash 2 Fire Strike 8% (clean), 6% (late) Roy fires fire crescent energy from the sword using the special button. When thrown, it causes Roy to levitate slightly in the air. The crescents travels the entire length of the stage. It causes the opponent to be launched up into the air upon contact.


Italics means they have to be unlocked.

  • Roy's up taunt has him triumphantly hold his sword above his head; unlike Marth's taunt, he holds it sideways. (Up)
  • Roy's side taunt has him posing while holding the Sword of Seals backhanded toward the screen, saying "僕 は 負けない!", which translates to "I won't lose!" This line was one of his victory quotes in Melee. (Right)
  • Roy stabs upward while a red flare shoots up in a gleam while shouting. (Left)
  • Roy's down taunt is his returning taunt from Melee, where he kneels and holds his sword behind him while yelling. The yell is one of his attacking lines when using moves. (Down)

Character Selection Screen

  • Roy swings his sword forward while saying "正義のために戦いる!" which translates to "I will fight for justice!"
  • Roy points his sword forward and says 容赦無く罰する" which translate to "I will show no mercy!"
  • Roy stabs upwards and shouts out loudly while fire shoots up.

On Screen Appearance

  • Appears from a spell circle, similar to others from his franchise, albeit crouching. The Sword of Seals is stuck in the ground when he appears, and Roy pulls it out before assuming his idle stance.
  • Roy is seen kneeling on the ground with the Sword of Seals stabbed to the ground. He then raises his head, rises up, and readies himself.
  • Roy steps out of flames and swings his sword which absorbs it.

Victory Animations

  • Swipes his sword once over his shoulder, then swipes it down and behind him while facing left, saying "真の戦いは、これからだ。", which translates to "The true fight is about to start."
  • Spins the Sword of Seals one and a half times and then sheaths it, saying"苦しい戦いだった。", which translates to "It was a difficult fight."
  • Flourishes his sword and poses with it by his side, saying saying "守るべきもののために、負けられない!", which translates to "For those whom I must protect, I will not lose!".
  • Roy slashes forward and then stabs upward while saying "さて、それは速かった" which translates to "Well, that was quick."
  • Roy appears alongside Liliana and says "ロイ、あなたは怪我をしますか?" which translates to "Roy, are you hurt?" in which Roy responds with "俺の心配をするな。" which translates to "Don't worry about me."
  • Roy holds the Sword of Seals aloft which begins to emanate fire from the blade which illuminates his face in a red glow. He says "あなたの火は、十分に強くなかった。" which translates to "Your fire wasn't strong enough."

Losing Animation

  • Roy faces forward while clapping.
  • Roy holds his fist out in anger while shaking it.
  • Ray closes his eyes while gritting his teeth and rubbing the top of his head.

  • Pumps his fist.
  • Swipes his hand lightly against the Sword of Seals while holding it in front of himself.
  • Roy brushes his hair with his free hand.
  • Roy taps his foot.


Roy's trophies can be earned by completing Classic Mode, Adventure Mode, All-Star Mode, and Boss Battle mode. In addition, further trophies can be found during matches and at the Trophy Shop.
