Chris Sawyer's Roller Coaster Tycoon 5 is an upcoming game for the Visus Sphere and PC, it is the fifth main entry in the Roller Coaster Tycoon series following Roller Coaster Tycoon World. It is the first game since Roller Coaster Tycoon 2 to have Chris Sawyer's proper involvement in the project after the backlash towards Roller Coaster World. It also features the returning team, Frontier to work on the game.

Gameplay

Players are able to create vast and expansive Amusment Parks and attempt to complete Scenarios in the Single-Player Campaign as well as share their own Scenarios online via the Workshop on both Systems. The game has multiple Sub-Menus which can be opened and closed easily to organize and manage the player's park.

The main gameplay has the player building Rides, Paths, Shops & Stalls, Scenery and adjusting terrain to build amusement Parks. The game uses a specialized Physics Engine which makes more much simpler World Editing using smooth scaling for the slopes although adjusts heights at set intervals (1.5m per interval). This gives it a combination of the RCT 1 & 2 and RCT 3's Terrain Editing Abilities. In addition the gameplay has returned to the previous Grid Based system of the first three games and has removed the Safety Factor on Roller Coasters from RCT World. The player can now inspect the various aspects of the ride such as the G-Forces, Maximum Velocity, etc. to see what they impact in regards to the Excitement, Intensity & Nausea Ratings.

New Features

A lot of new additions both major and minor have been added to Roller Coaster Tycoon 5 that haven't appeared in RCT 1, 2, 3, World or Planet Coaster.

  • Certain Water Rides (Log Flumes, Raft Rides, Boat Hires, River Rapid, Splash Boats & Submarine Ride) can now have intersecting pathways, these are large 5x5 segments of track that allow the track to pass through itself  without changing the elevation
  • Guests are highly customizable now with not only the ability to change their favoured Intensity being upgraded but also the addition of their general rate of hunger and thirst as well as multipliers to their Nausea Ratings being customizable. Randomly Generated Guests for all Scenarios will follow an average for that particular scenario with a random extension factor of up to 10%
  • Within the Manual for the Physical release of the game the calculation of Excitement, Intensity and Nausea for Roller Coasters is shown to help individuals calculate how to make better coasters
  • A new piece of track on all Roller Coasters is the Station Brakes, these are not necessary although will guarantee stopping crashes due to Station Failures
  • The Height Limit has been set to 500m in RCT5
  • A Single Roller Coaster can now have up to 6 Stations
  • A Single Transport Ride can now have up to 10 Stations
  • Entertainers, while dancing will make individuals completely forget how long they've been in line for
  • Security Guards have a significantly higher radius of affect and walk much more quickly
  • Handymen will actively seek out the closest object that needs their attention that is within their Allocated Area
  • Mechanics can now be used to upgrade rides in certain ways
  • Rides can be upgraded to increase their ratings or decrease their ratings as well as impact Ride Time, Max Speed, etc.
  • A new Build Option is the "Set Build" which allows players to load, pre-saved Ride-Path-Scenery groups that are both in the game already and can be saved by the player. This allows for easy creation and customization as well as allowing players to effectively create their own attractions with pre-built scenery included. Set Builds can be up to 100x100 in grid size
  • The maximum size of a Map has been increased to a maximum of 1000x1000 Square Grid
    • Natural Terraforming has also had its height limits increased to -500m and 500m respectively

Themes

Themes return once again although this time rides remain with a standard version and have options for themed variants. Variants now change a ride's overall appearance (including tracked rides) and the vehicles.

Rides

Rollercoasters

Rollercoasters (for which the games are named after) are the custom built rides that the player creates and usually generate the largest values for Excitement, Intensity & Nausea. A well-designed Rollercoaster can also receive a massive amount of income in comparison to other types of rides. Roller Coasters must be built from Scratch or with Pre-Designed Tracks (the player is able to save their custom designs for later use).

Roller Coaster Segments

In Roller Coaster Tycoon 5 the player is able to greatly customize their Roller Coasters, with a variety of different structures able to be built, a new feature to the game is the ability to save Track segments and use them for other roller coasters (that have the correct equivalents). This allows for a significantly greater degree of customization on the player's end and streamlines certain design aspects. The Base features of Roller Coasters are listed below although not all apply to all Roller Coasters.

Gentle Rides

Gentle Rides are Small to Medium sized rides that are usually Flat Rides (meaning they cannot have their physical size changed) and vary in size with some being only a few squares in size while others can take up over 50 tiles. Gentle Rides tend to have low Excitement, Intensity & Nausea making them good for guests who have low Intensity Tolerances. In addition Gentle Rides benefit from being close to Roller Coasters and other Intense Rides as it generally improves their Excitement Rating and can get Guests to ride more intense Rides afterwards.

Transport Rides

Transport Rides are (as their name suggests) built to provide Traansport for Guests. Although not the fastest rides in a park, the Transport Rides are generally cheap and can haul a large number of guests from one area to another. In addition certain Transport Rides are able to navigate through tight spaces making them great to reach crowded areas.

Thrill Rides

Thrill Rides are generally Flat Rides that have high Intensity values although also have decent Excitement and average Nausea levels. Thrill Rides can at times substitute the thrill of a Roller Coaster as some Thrill Rides can be as or even more Exciting than Roller Coasters. Thrill Rides tend to also cost more than Gentle Rides in proportion to the type of Ride.

Water Rides

Water Rides are designed to be either In Water or Use Water in them. These Rides tend to benefit from warmer climate Scenarios as well as where there are large bodies of water. That is not to say that most of these can't do well in colder climates although often suffer a lack of interest. Water Rides can range in excitement from Calm Boat Hires & Submarine Rides to Water Slides and River Rapids that go nearly as fast as Roller Coasters.

Scenarios

Scenarios have become a mix of the original format of the old games as well as the format of RCT3, this means that while the first two objectives (Apprentice and Entrepeneur) are timed, the Tycoon objective can take however long the player needs, in addition however, if the player can achieve the requirement of the Apprentice or Entrepeneur level objectives before the time is up they will immediately complete said objective receiving a cash bonus (+$15K for Apprentice, +$35K for Entrepeneur).

Scenario Requirements Description Objectives
1 Fountain Fantasy None A young patch of land that had recently been acquired, now seeking young Theme Park developers to help pull in the local population, although not heavily forested, the scaping mountain in the east and the flowing river in the west give the property a feeling of a fantasy land. The only structure in the park is a small fountain near the entrance with a path leading up to it. Have 200 Guests and a Park Rating of 600 by October Year 1 Have 500 Guests and a Park Rating of 650 by October Year 2 Reach 1000 Guests Total
2 Sandstone Mines None A massive canyon that was the home for a mining town although ever since the canyon's been run dry of resources the town has become nothing but a bridge and some ruins. The Mines in the canyon offer some excellent scenery although the location as a whole will require some real spunk to bring in the guests. Have 750 Guests and a Park Rating of 650 by October Year 3 Build 4 Roller Coasters with Excitement Ratings of at least 4 before October Year 3 Build 1 Roller Coaster with an Excitement Rating of at least 8
3 Skyreach Castle None This once great Theme Park has lost a lot of its popularity over time, people have grown over the fantasy setting of the Park and want to seem more exciting things. The Castle itself is only partially owned by the park although the main rollercoaster, Rapunzel makes full use of the interior for exciting twists.
