It evolves into Lycanroc. The form it evolves into depends on the game it evolves in.
- In Pokémon Sun, Rockruff evolves into Midday Form Lycanroc when leveled up during the day.
- In Pokémon Moon, Rockruff evolves into Midnight Form Lycanroc when leveled up at night.
Rockruff is a quadrupedal canid with a pale beige fur and a white-gray belly. Its rock-embedded collar and curled tail are of the same white color and its paws are colored brown. It also has a dark brown muzzle and a pink nose, as well as triagular, lopped ears, with pink insides and dark brown tips. It has large, blue eyes with black pupils.
Rockruff has a great sense of smelling and never forgets an odor it has smelled. Tales exist about Rockruff getting separated from their Trainers, and them being able to track them down for days until they are reunited, using only the faintest of scents.
Rockruff is a sociable Pokémon, but gets wilder as it grows. If Rockruff howls when the sun goes down, that means it is close to evolving. It is said that it will leave its Trainer then, and comes back when fully evolved.
Rockruff will keep standing bravely in battle, even after taking severe damage. It is so persistent, it will keep battling until it has outlasted its foe, even if the opponent is stronger.
Rockruff greets others by rubbing the rocks on its collar against the other's neck. While Rockruff means well, this may hurt its Trainer.
Rockruff is based on a spitz-type of domestic dog.
Rockruff comes from rock and ruff (onomatopoetic word for barking), and also possibly the phonetic spelling of rough.
Iwanko is a combination of 岩 iwa (rock), ワン wan (onomatopoetic word for barking), わんこ wanko (doggy), and 子 ko (young animal).
