Series Project X Zone spin-off

Project Intercept X, or Project Intercept Cross (プロジェクト・インターセプト・クロス), is a tactical RPG, fighting game hybrid and a spin-off of the Project X Zone series. Similar to the Project X Zone titles (or, more specifically, the second title), Project Intercept X is a crossover between a number of different franchises owned by Bandai Namco Entertainment, Sega, Capcom, and Nintendo. The game is developed by Existence Software, with assistance from Monolith Soft, and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment for the Nintendo Switch system.

Story

A reality warped by chaos and destruction, designed solely to sew turmoil and taint lost souls. This world of anarchy should never have existed, and yet it has now encroached upon and merged with unsuspecting universes.

Gameplay

Project Intercept X is first and foremost a fighting game that incorporates the gameplay of tactical role-playing games. These different gameplay styles are broken up into "Field" and "Battle" Phases. The Field Phase plays out like a typical tactical role-playing game. Players are able to control a number of different characters on a board, and have them perform a variety of different effects that may affect nearby foes or allies in different ways. Upon landing on the same space as an opponent, the two units will enter Battle Phase, which plays out in as a traditional one-on-one fighting game, in which the goal is to deplete the opponent's health bar. While in a Battle Phase, attacks can be performed using three buttons - light, heavy, and special attacks - while the fourth button can be held down to guard. Unlike most fighting games, units do not regain health after a battle is complete; their health can only be restored by one of their allies.

Playable characters fall into one of three categories: Single Units, Pair Units, or Fracture Units. Single Units are characters that can be played as in both the Field and Battle Phases, and can only act alone; Pair Units are the same, but they can be paired up with the Fractured Units in order to boost their capabilities. Fractured Units are playable characters that can only be played as in the Field Phase, and must be teamed up with a Pair Unit in order to be effective. In addition to categorizing characters as Single, Pair, or Fractured Units, every character has two abilities which they are capable of performing in Field Phase which may further denote them as Warriors (those with attack-oriented abilities), Supporters (those with statistic-oriented abilities), and Breakers (those with a combination of both, or, in some cases, wholly unique abilities).

All stages in a Battle Phase are identical, save for different scenery. The world design is saved for the Field Phases, with some maps featuring different objects that can be interacted with in order to change the layout of the board. In the game's story mode, the Field Phase will often be populated with a number of unique enemy units that must be defeated in order to clear the stage, while other times only a specific opponent must be defeated in order to complete it.

Players can also choose to play matches exclusively in the Battle Phase in multiplayer modes. These Battle Phase-exclusive fights balance out the statistics of Pair Units, as Fractured Units do not appear in it at all.

Characters

Playable Characters

All Single Units and Pair Units are playable in Battle Phases, while Fracture Units are not. Fracture Units must always be paired with a Pair Unit, and they will gain Chemistry with a Pair Unit the more they are teamed up with them, increasing the power of their abilities. In addition, all Pair Units have a certain Fracture Unit who they have "Special Chemistry" with, and teaming these two Units together will allow the former to perform a special ability that they would otherwise be unable to.

Amaterasu
UMvC3 Amaterasu
Character
Field Abilities
Amaterasu is the main protagonist of Capcom's 1494 okami-prev series of action-adventure games. The Shinto goddess of the sun, Amaterasu (or Ammy) takes the form of a white wolf that carries her weapon, known as Divine Retribution, on her back. Ammy's appearance - particularly her tail - takes the appearance of a calligraphy brush, through which she can paint lines in order to release her powers; she is also capable of using a number of heavenly weapons known as the Divine Instruments, such as the aforementioned Divine Retribution, which come in three forms: reflectors, rosaries, and glaives. She often travels alongside Issun, a small talkative Poncle artist.
Holy Smoke
Amaterasu uses a Celestial Brush technique in order to summon Holy Smoke over a large number of spaces surrounding her, meaning that all allies or foes would be unable to see the locations of others within it. Paired units are capable of locating an opponent should they be within two spaces of them; single units are unable to locate them unless they land on the same space as them. This ability has a five turn cooldown. The Holy Smoke will remain on the stage for three turns.
Sunrise
Amaterasu summons the sun to shine holy light down upon all allies, clearing them of all status ailments and removing Holy Smoke should it be in effect. This ability has a six turn cooldown.

Estelle is the princess of Ilyccia, and, unbeknownst to her, she harbours the power to convert Aer into energy. Being a Child of the Full Moon, she does not need to wield a Blastia in order to perform powerful Artes, making her the "cleric" of Yuri Lowell's group (though she also has a large amount of powerful magical Artes at her disposal, as well as a number of melee ones).
Healing Circle
Estelle casts Healing Circle, which restores 50% of the max health to all allies on spaces adjacent to the one she is on. The size of the Healing Circle can be increased should she be paired up with a fractured unit. This ability has a three turn cooldown.
Nightingale
Estelle performs Nightingale in order to heal 35% of the max health of all allies on the field. When paired up with a fractured unit, this doubles to 70% of all allies' max health. This ability has a five turn cooldown.

Nightmare
Nightmare03
Character
Field Abilities
Nightmare is an animated suit of armour and the host of Soul Edge, that serves as the main antagonist of Namco's Soul Calibur logo series. Soul Edge is a sword that, after having been tainted in blood and hatred, has gained a wicked soul that desires damnation and destruction; it uses Nightmare as a means to kill others and obtain the souls it needs to restore itself. "Nightmare" has actually been a number of individuals who have been tainted by the sword's cursed power, with Siegfried, Inferno, and a swordsman named "Graf Dumas" all being the basis of Nightmare's physical form. Nightmare is the main antagonist of Project Intercept X, creating a new reality via Soul Edge in order to foster damnation between lost souls.
Soul Wave
Utilizing the power of Soul Edge, Nightmare unleashes a wave of energy that sucks a fraction of health from all nearby Units (both allied and enemy), and using it to heal himself. This ability has a one turn cooldown, though Nightmare will only use it when he has lost enough health.
Seed of Destruction
Nightmare unleashes a powerful red burst of energy that damages all Units in the vicinity and leaves them at 1HP. This ability has a four turn cooldown, though there are also some battles in which Nightmare will use this at scripted points, regardless of whether the ability cooldown should have been completed. In Nightmare's initial battle, the scripted use of this ability attacks all Units on the field enough to defeat them.

Trivia

  • Project Intercept X went through a number of different name changes before its final title was decided; among these were X, Project X, Project InterX, and Project Intersect X.
    • When the game was formally announced during the Fantendo Spooky Scary Showcase 2017, the game was referred to as Project Intersect X instead of its final name, despite the logo saying otherwise. This was due to the writer losing much of the presentation's writing before it began, and thus had to rely on an earlier draft that referred to the game as such, causing confusion.
