The gameplay of Pokkén Tournament BURST! is relatively unchanged from the previous game. The same fighting style still applies, complete with the Phase Shift mechanic. There is a new mechanic added however, that being Pokémon Abilities. Each Pokémon has an ability that can either enhance their performance in battle or hinder their opponent's. Abilities can be turned off if the player so desires.
It is confirmed that there will be sixty Pokémon playable, with ten each representing Kanto, Hoenn, Sinnoh, and Unova, and five each representing Johto and Kalos, plus an unconfirmed amount from the newest generation. In addition there are also thirty sets of Support Pokémon, with each set having two Pokémon to either attack, disrupt, or enhance.
Uses Seed Bomb and throws a barrage of seeds at the opponent. Average recharge time.
Uses Soft-Boiled, healing the aligned Pokémon for 30 hit points. Slow recharge time.
Uses Gastro Acid, nullifying the opposing Pokémon's ability temporarily. Slow recharge time.
Uses Tickle, temporarily nullifying the opponent's attack and defense. Quick recharge time.

Uses Aqua Ring, gradually restoring the aligned Pokémon's hit points. Average recharge time.
Uses Flame Charge, ramming into the opposing Pokémon while surrounded by fire. Quick recharge time.
Uses Dark Void to put the opponent in a nightmarish sleep, leaving them vulnerable. Average recharge time.
Uses Hyperspace Hole for a powerful attack that ignores blocking. Average recharge time.
- Blaze: When the Pokémon's health reaches the halfway mark, it's speed is increased. (Charizard)
- Static: When the Pokémon is at low health, there is a chance for the Pokémon to paralyze the opponent upon contact, halving their speed. (Pikachu)
